This is 100% why I stopped watching. It happened twice at the end of consecutive seasons; and it had already abandoned the monster of the week format, which I liked, in favor of angles/demons unendingly, which I did not like.

I asked my roommate at the time (who is a huge Supernatural fan) about it and he confirmed that was basically the trend every season going forward. I thanked him for saving me a bunch of time and Ive never watched it since.

Though I have been considering watching the first two seasons again, since I remember liking those, and then just stopping.
Seasons 1 through 5 are the original vision. Everything afterwards is pure fiction.

Every season I watched before giving up starts or ends with one of them dying and the other one moving mountains to bring him back despite being made clear that they DO NOT want to be back and learning nothing of the chaos it causes.

So yeah, toxic fraternal love.
See they go to a lot of effort in those later seasons to make it clear why that happens.

I get the complaint but theyre literally grizzled war vererans who just need some R&R and theyre good to go.

Aside from the pop culture references that were kinda funny later seasons, story wise it definitely got stupid for multiple reasons.

For example, they started bringing godly beings into the story, that really made little sense how they could lose. IMO.

Then there was the toxic relationship of the brothers and also moral superiority complex of judging others for things they are literally doing.

The funny thing about all the iffy-to-bad writing is that the show justifies it in the last couple of seasons by saying that the actual God Almighty - already established to be a mediocre fiction writer - has been just fucking with them for their entire life.

Yes actually.

In the last season, God opens all the gates to Hell which includes Lucifer's cage, so Michael and Adam are freed.

That last season was powerful. I am not religious at all but I recognize the sensitive nature of the subject matter in S15. I think they achieved a really great ending while avoiding outright offensive stuff, it was pretty thoughtful/creative.

If you gave up on the show around S8/S9 I don't blame you but I would recommend picking it up again. It may never hit the same greatness as the original S1-S5 run but it gets pretty close. My big problem with the several seasons after S5 is that they tried to focus on singular drawn out plotlines and the tone just felt too serious. By about S10 it becomes light-hearted again, the actors feel like they have genuine chemistry and are having genuine fun and there are more MOTW episodes.

In my experience Supernatural lasted 5 seasons because it made you love all its characters while slowly escalating the plot to a perfect crescendo.

then s6-15 you continued watching because the characters were fun. Soon the writing would become borderline bad and youd consider dropping the show and then theyd drop an amazing fun episode or plot hook that was genuinely interesting and youd get invested back. Then the cycle would repeat until it ended

To the credit there, it really wasnt out of no where.

People were speculating he was God quite early.

And aside from the many many other contradictions in this series, Chuck turning out to be a huge narcissist wasnt one of them. It actual fits quite well.

Even as early they started talking about angels, it was thrown out pretty early that God doesnt appear to really give a fuck.... given everything that happened in the story at that point. So much so, that even a few characters tossed it out there.

not the God part

also the character Chuck is where the contradiction lies
rewatch season 11, reconciles with his sister, helps people, then he fucks off

it is obvious as of this season they did not have the idea of him being a bad guy in mind

and apparently this is actually fact, the writers admitted they didn't think ahead

so no, it doesn't fit, they kinda were out of options to escalate to a bigger bad and already had Chuck so it was "well, why not just make him evil?" despite his earlier depictions of being that he actually was helping out

for example, who brought Castiel back from the dead? Chuck did
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulpn9xfvV1Q

Chuck instead of being upset they didn't kill each other which apparently was supposed to be his plan
was happy about it

Given the fact that Eric Kripke, intended this to be the final ending to Supernatural, I like to think that the ambiguous resurrection of Sam was originally intended to be the work of God. At the beginning of season 5, Raphael states that God is dead and that Lucifer is the one who resurrected Castiel. Lucifer also tells Nick that for God to tell bad things happen he was either sadistic or uncaring. This raised the theme of whether or not God was alive, and if so did he care. In this finally I believe that Kripke tried to answer this questions by proving that God was still alive by having God resurrect Castiel after both Lucifer and Michael were out of the picture proving that he was in fact alive and the one helping the Winchesters all along. As Cas said "He helped maybe more than we know...". Kripke then addresses the question of whether or not he cared for the Winchesters by having Dean be angry at God and demand to know why God did not give him reward for his efforts to stop the end of the world and why he did not bring Sam back for the cage. By ending the series off shortly after Dean's rant on God with Sam's resurrection and his mysterious release from the cage, I believe Kripke has attempting to imply that God heard the words of Dean and resurrected Sam to prove he does care for the Winchesters and has granted Sam and Dean a normal life and family away form their hunting as a reward for their work. this would have been a great way to tie up any loose ends and answer any questions that the 5th season raised. Unfortunately this profound ending was throw out in the sixth season by Sera Gamble who replaced Kripke as show runner. I won't lie, the sixth season was good, but to have Sam's resurrection be changed to the work of Death and Castiel, the themes and questions of God raised in the previous season definitely lost its closure and edge.

I disagree.

Again, as early as angels were introduced, God by multiple characters hinted or outright implied God was an asshole who didnt care all that much about humanity beyond his ego.

Even the season you are talking about has him being a complete self centered asshole who only thought about himself. His sister pointed out in the very season you mentioned that he created an entire universe just to worship him, and she wasnt shocked about that either. There was even several episodes of her outright scolding his worshippers who thought he was oh so benevolent and loving. Then theres that writer angel also briefly flipped out on God for his self pity party. The "reconciliation" with his sister was after she beat him.... and SHE had a change of heart about ending the universe. Thats just talking about the season you listed.

Going back to past seasons, theres a mountain of evidence God wasnt so loving and caring.... and very much loved having people worship him.

Not saying the writers were amazing. But on the whole God being a self centered asshole with a massive ego.... they've been pretty consistent since the introduction of angels.

Basically this. There were things I loved in the post s5 episodes

Charlie
More Crowley
Sam and Dean were as entertaining as ever

Then there was

Killing Bobby
Killing Charlie
Killing Crowley
Rowena
Rowena
Rowena
Oh and who can forget, Rowena?

The plot themselves were very hit miss but generally it was the chemistry of the main leads that kept you watching it through the rest

7th though was only saved by Dean jokes about the seasons main villian. I think the one of the seasons episodes had one with the Impala pov which was a cool idea

Curtis Armstrong honestly doesn't get enough credit for his Metatron (and the basically-Metatrons he does in like six other places).

Guy does "sleazy backstabbing 'man-behind-the-man'" sort of characters like Aidan fuckin' Gillen.

Especially since he does the competent and incompetent versions equally well.

Also did not realize that he's Booger from Revenge of the anerds until I was double-checking his name.

Yeah, pretty much.

It's an interesting thing really. Dean is definitely the more typical "top" character with Sam being the more sensitive one, even if neither one are particularly feminine. Someone smarter and more prone to inanity could probably write a paper on how society's views on gender infiltrate even a gay incest pairing because I think the only reason Sam is typically the top in these fics is because he's taller and broader.

Hell, if you go into the Omegaverse which originated in the Supernatural fandom, someone probably has written a paper on gender dynamics given that Omegaverse fiction is primarily just a way to apply typically male/female gender dynamics to gay relationships.

no, it was about John and Mary before the events of the show took place. It outright contradicted the show and lore.

Well not really. Considering ot was an another universe, Dean was on his final hunt after death for the creatire destroying universes

wow it seriously did not click that Metatron was Booger. I knew he looked familiar but never dug deep enough (no pun intended) to figure out who the actor was.

You know, I'm just now realizing that's probably why Snot has that name on American Dad, being that he's voiced by him.
