it was incredible. absolutely transcendental movie experience. it was like a stageplay, this simultaneous earnestness and hamminess coming together to create something i couldnt look away for, not even for a second. i was always curious as to what was next. it was sad, it was sweet, it was dark, and it was beautiful.

i think everyone should see it but i don't think everyone would like it. it's my movie of the year right now. ill talk more in-depth tomorrow, am tired

I just saw it. I completely loved it.
No joke, it felt like a perfect movie to me.
Like Im not saying its my favorite, but perfectly made. Amazing story/script, well cast and acted. Amazing tone, sets, sound, music, lighting and effects. Not one thing seemed cheap or bad in any aspect. One thing in current movies that annoys me is dramas are filmed so dark in most scenes. This is a movie made for that, yet it never used that gimmick to set the tone,

i never saw a trailer so I'm not sure what was shown, but I can maybe see some being bored, its starts out strong like it might have lots of action, then it goes into a long origin which I found compelling, but I could see some being bored there.

spoilers kinda

i really love how Victor starts out innocent, pure and you relate and feel for him. But by the end hes a monster and just vile and evil, yet unlike other movies where characters turn evil or go crazy, this is a slow burn with nothing majorly changing him. Theres not a moment where you notice hes different. Unlike most movies its an act or few scenes where something changes them.

yeah he was phenomenal. the whole cast

and i agree, Frankenstein's build to evil sociopath wasnt a build at all. it was an organic and seamless thread of his character. no big "here it is" moment. that's part of why the movie was sad

there was this one scene, after Frankenstein created the new life, he returns to civilization for his brothers wedding. that scene was heartbreaking and so hard to watch. he just kept pushing the creature, who was there as a man not as some antagonistic force. then he tried to shoot it out of rage, which he knew wouldn't work anyway. killedhis brothers fiance, who he also loved or at least wanted. then the commotion continues and his brother gets his head cracked open

that was so difficult. then he takes the cowards way out. abandons life, abandons society, faces no repercussions. just goes on an emdless hunt in order to get what to me was death by cop (frankenstein) suicide. he never owned it, amd even to the very end seemed insincere. but the creature was better than that.

it was such a good movie

I love Del Toro, I love the novel, and I've heard this takes some inspiration from Coppola's Dracula, so it's probably gonna be one of my favorite movies.

I will say for anyone who's a fan of Frankenstein, I'll toss in the Junji Ito adaptation of it as well, both Del Toro's and Ito's take on the source differ in their own ways, but all three keep their central themes consistent. I especially like how in Ito's version, Victor reluctantly agrees to The Creature's request for another, but upon completion she's just as terrified of The Creature as everyone else has been in the story so far, showing the tragedy that The Creature would never be rid from.. Haven't seen the Branagh version, but considering how both script writers essentially disown it including Frank Darabont who also wrote The Mist, The Blob, Shawshank, and Green Mile, I'm skeptical of it. Robert De Niro as The Creature sounds like horrible casting.

This is what happens in the book except at the last second Victor realizes exactly this possibility and destroys the second creature before bringing it to life.

Been a hot minute since I read the book, but I believe he pulled the plug and destroyed what he started because he was worried about the two Creatures reproducing, which then caused the rest of the book to happen. Ito's version has him actually complete the second creature, and while she's of primitive intellect upon awakening like the original Creature, what is apparent is that she's visibly terrified the second The Creature arrives and tries speaking to her, attempting to slash The Creature across the face. I feel that Victor actually completing the bride emphasizes the tragedy for The Creature's existence that no matter what, he would have always been alone in the world, even with Victor attempting to uphold his end of the bargain to create an Eve to his Adam.

I would highly recommend to watch it on the big screen if you can. There is a lot of dynamic scenes that just goes so well in a theater setting It does have a limited viewing though.

Watched it. fantastic. Oscar Isaac killed it. Loved his whole performance in part 1, to the point I didn't even notice how long the movie goes without the creature.

Monster was great too. No notes. The whole cottage arc was brilliantly adapted, save for one thing.

My main nitpicks were (and they really are just nitpicks) that the creature was a bit too sympathetic. I felt that the biggest tragedy from the novel wasn't merely the abuse the creature endured, but how that abuse transformed it. And in the movie the creature never actually becomes a monster, all his kills are effectively self defense.

I'm also not sure how I felt about the old man dying. The monster being rejected for simply his appearance and nature was a big part of the story for me. Giving people any plausible cause for their hatred sort of diminishes the impact of the creature's rejection by society.

But I also think those changes do support what the movie is trying to do by the end. And I liked the direction the ending took. Except the velocity with which it got there. After the amazing care and detail paid to the story up until the wedding, the last bit of the movie felt really rushed. The final exchange between Victor and the Creature was beautiful, but it felt like something had gone missing on the way there.

Anyways, it really is a great movie. So glad I got to see it in a theater.

Also, glad they kept one of the hardest lines from the book. "You may be my creator, but I am your master!" Chills, lol

Been a hot minute since I read the book, but

Victor was concerned about 3 things.

  1. That they might reproduce and then who knows what would happen after that
  2. Just because he was inherently good doesn't mean she would be
  3. She might reject him causing him to become even more violent

Are there any jump scares in this movie? I actually just found a hidden theater nearby that is playing it (that I almost never go to), and I really want to go see it, but as someone who is super prone to jump scares Im a bit worried this one will have a few.

Other than that I would be super excited and prefer to go see it in the theater format, versus at home on Netflix.

There's maybe one jump scare if you want to stretch the definition of the term but its really not that kind of horror movie.
