McDonalds apple pie? That is probably it
I'm not trying to downplay it because some people are in fact very successful at this but I have personally known people who had like 5 buildings and from the outside looking in it really looked like they were very successful as they had a large and nice house in a nice area, nice vehicles, nice vacations and yeah they were bringing in decent money from each rental.Yeah, but it's bumfuck nowhere Iowa
But when you pulled back the curtain they were leveraged to their eyeballs and had a ton of credit card debt and the rentals were barely paying the mortgage/property taxes/insurance and being that they were actually trying to be good owners and stay on top of maintenance they were doing this huge balancing act and not making near the money you would think and when you factored in their own house they were living above their means.
I'm talking like a few million in debt but they kept thinking thinking that eventually they could crawl out of that hole and those properties would be paid off and worth so much more money down the line when they were in an age range where they could consider early retirement but in the present they were just drowning in debt and denial.
Also damn at your prices. Just shows how different cost of living can be. You could easily have a nice house where I live for that type of money. Hell the 1 bedroom apartment I rented 26 years ago is still currently only in the $700 range and it comes with free water/garbage, free high speed internet, and super cheap utilities. It also has a pool and a dog park and is sitting right next to a major college campus and is pretty nice.
