It's also pretty boring though, and mechs are obviously immune to it. Personally I went with the assault rifle and sniper for most of the game, busting out the GEP gun when I had to kill armored targets, and it worked like a charm.

(also, buy some stealth if you're not getting weaponskills - and invest in at least one weaponskill later on, there's a single unavoidable fight that is a ***** and a half if you have no training)
PS: Ninja'd, but yeah, minicrossbow is good. Definitely the right choice for a ninja-style playthrough like you seem to want.

I take responsibility/credit for this, at least partially.
Also, that looks like a pretty decent opening set of skills, though if you don't mind a recommendation, focus on small arms at the start and wait until a certain point to go into low-tech/melee. If you ever get stuck on something don't hesitate to ask BTW, everybody's HYPE to see you go through a great game! :)

Don't worry about making the weapon fit the element. Just to spoil a little, two of the choices I considered and then discarded because somethig cooler came up for Option B were a Swallow (blame the second game I'm playing ATM), and claws (decided against it because claws are Blood Arts' realm). They got weirder and more interesting from there.

KanzarisKelshen 08/12/11 2:44:00 AM #184 |
Hey guys, just recently got into comics seriously (i. e. not just stray issues), so I figured now was as good a time as any to jump in after lurking the topics for a bit. Still busy hitting up the past highlights, so I've got a huuuuuuge backlog, but I'm also trying to keep up with current stuff so as to avoid constantly falling behind. Anyway, just wanted to say that LtM's idea seems really good on paper: for a comics newbie like me, it's a total godsend that helps me get oriented on which writers to keep an eye on, and also which series' to follow. Don't listen to Halo, who seems to be confusing "wordy" with "padded out": that's a wonderful way to hype a comic up in a way a newbie can easily understand. If nobody else is interested in pitching writeups in that'll be a pity, but I'd still like to read what LtM has to say about other books!

Xiahou Shake posted... From: Forceful_Dragon | #039 It hasn't really hurt LoL. The people who play at a high level end up getting basically any champion they would want to use. This is just based on my own knowledge, you're better than me at LoL and it's a safe bet you've played more DotA than me too, but it seems like DotA requires more decent team composition at all levels of play. In a match between less amazing players in LoL, an all AP team or an all tanks team could get the job done. Again, I may be speaking from too little experience, but that doesn't seem to be the case in DotA. Even if I'm totally wrong about that, you can't tell me DotA2 would benefit from a free Pudge week. >_>
Conversely, teamcomp can be a nonissue if one player is skilled enough in DotA because you can 1v5 with enough farm. Trying to argue this doesn't work because it's impossible to win solo in LoL unless the enemy team mass DC's, but teamcomp can screw you over, while in DotA you can win alone but if you're not good enough you'll lose every time.

B) "What did Godric mean when he talked about Focus?"
Fallon sighs. "Another thing you don't know yet. We'll have to take this from the top." Turning to Etta, he asks: "Etta, since you just fought him, care to demonstrate?"
Etta nods. "Leave it to me, Trip." For a brief instant, she closes her eyes and clasps her hands. Immediately, orange light begins to be sucked into her, seemingly from nowhere. Soon, it stops and Etta opens her eyes. "That enough?"
"Yes, thank you. As you saw right there, Etta started drawing magic from the environment. It exists everywhere, and in everyone, to some extent. We Knights are special not because we have a unique gift, but because we're the only ones for whom it came unwrapped. What we call Focus is simply a state of total detachment from your current situation, of focusing only in reaching out to the world to retrieve its magic for personal use. Several religions preach about a state of oneness with the world. In a way, we believe they are talking about being in Focus. Of course, while it's useful and allows us to keep using magic even when we're out of power...it's not foolproof. Etta, get ready." Fallon closes his eyes now, and extends his arms sideways. He begins to draw blackness in, but then Etta gives him a nasty shove, and it abruptly stops.
"Thanks. A state of Focus requires immense concentration, and thus puts you at risk. It is not something to be done lightly, as you paint a big target on your back while drawing in energy. Sometimes, however, being able to use just a little bit more magic can be the difference between life and death, and a little bit of pain can be worthwhile. You should spend at least an hour every evening trying to Focus, until you find a way that works for you. For example, to Focus, I concentrate in an image of children playing, happy and safe - an image of what I fight for. Perhaps a sound you remember hearing, or somebody's touch will work as a catalyst for you."
[New Term Added to Glossary!]
"Now come with me. It's about time we issued you some equipment." Fallon heads for the door and gestures for you to follow. He leads you up the stairs, and into the door to the right of the one that leads to the training course.
The room beyond is hot. Really hot. INCREDIBLY hot. You feel yourself begin to sweat, and the Sprite hops off your shoulder and heads for the door, frightened. You notice that Fallon seems to be unaffected by the room's temperature. On the far end is a hovering orb of fire, and a crucible below it.
"Welcome to the Forge. This is where we created Etta's Lucky Seven, and both Godric's Forge Item and my own, too." He turns to face you.
23) "Alright, so before we go to work, we need to decide what sort of Item you wish to use in battle. What are you thinking of?" A) Select Item. [Please Specify; Need not be a weapon] B) Let the Writer choose for you.

Personally, I think the wasted round spent Attacking was what screwed you guys up. The one round where the sprite critted was more-or-less worthwhile, but that other round where you dealt like four damage doomed you because you had no time to heal and attack again. That's as much as I'm willing to say for now.

muddersmilk posted... For that round.
I wasn't planning on delaying every round. Though now that you mention it that does make sense. We will need to keep that in mind for later, that we can't just start going first again if we wait for her to attack.
Once you opted to delay, you went second every round. Think of it like a system of D&D initiative: the init count doesn't reset, it persists across rounds. You could have gone first again, but for that you'd have needed to give Etta a free round of attacking.

And yes, before anybody asks, you lost the fight. Etta's next attack was a repeat of the tech that basically erased both characters' HP a couple rounds back, and even if it had rolled minimum values you couldn't have survived it. For context's sake, the first use of the tech dealt 92 damage pre-mitigation and splitting.

Recovering, Etta remorselessly shoots you again, and more black goo spills out of your body. You fall down on one knee. How can you beat her? She's too strong...
[MC HP remaining: 12/75] [Empathic Sprite HP remaining: 15/60]
Though equally wounded by the gunshots (it barely resembles its usual humanlike appearance anymore; It's been reduced into a formless gloop), the Sprite refuses to surender. It jumps to you and surrounds your body with a protective cocoon. With a flash of insight, you realize what's coming next, just before several black tendrils emerge from your body, and brutally maul Etta, who lets out a strangled cry.
[Henrietta HP remaining: 23/150]
Suddenly, a blast of scorching flame consumes the tendrils. Henrietta walks out of it, death in her eyes. Winded as you are, you cannot even attempt to move as she strides toward you.
"Lesson Three." She says, her voice murderous. "An eye for an eye. In this case, yours." The last thing you see is the Lucky Seven's barrel. Then, thunder fills the air and everything goes black....
...And afterward, you find yourself standing on the training course's alcove again, a little shaken but otherwise unharmed. In front of you, Etta extends a hand.
"Not bad, newbie. You got too anxious to beat me and left your defenses open, but for a rookie, that was a pretty nice showing." Etta says, a tone of newfound respect in her voice. Behind her, Fallon nods.
[HP/MP restored to pre-battle values!] [40 XP earned!]
"Good work, kid. You didn't even have a Forge item of your own to even things up, and you still held your ground against Etta. I'm impressed." He says, lifting a hand in a thumbs-up motion.
"I wonder, though. We got to see everything, and at no point did you try to Focus yourself in spite of how much magic you were throwing around. Do you have that much power to draw from, or do you simply not know how to do that?" Godric asks, curious. Below, in the training course proper, a flare lights up, covering a portion of ruined city block in green light. "Hm. I'll go see what's up, guys. Be right back in a minute." As Godric descends down a ladder, you take the Knights' words in.
22) The fight is barely over, and yet you already have more questions. What will you ask Henrietta and Fallon? A) "A Forge Item? What's that?" B) "What did Godric mean when he talked about Focus?" C) "What does that flare stand for down below?"

Having exposed yourself due to your attack, Etta finds herself in the perfect position to counterstrike. She simply presses her Lucky Seven against your stomach and squeezes the trigger. Something black and gooey begins to leak out from your belly, as the Sprite's protection finds itself overwhelmed.
[MC HP remaining: 20/75] [Empathic Sprite HP remaining: 22/60]
You numbly try to strike back, but Etta easily deflects your blow once more.
Your distraction, however, allows your Sprite to sneak up on her. An explosion of brilliant light envelops Etta for a moment, as it hits her with a nasty blow. When the light fades, she briefly looks exhausted from trying to contain it.

Immediately afterward, Etta fires off a massive barrage of shots. They streak through the air leaving a flaming trail behind, and hammer your spiritual body relentlessly. Huge, gaping holes appear on the Sprite, and it sags forward a little. You're not feeling that hot yourself, either. Suddenly, you feel rather tired and weak...
[MC HP remaining: 28/75] [Empathic Sprite HP remaining: 29/60]
...Nonetheless, you dash forward. This won't be over until you emerge victorious. Quick as thought, Etta fires off two more rounds at you as you stagger backward from the first hit. They tear larger holes into the sprite, which nonetheless remains steadfast.
[MC HP remaining: 31/75] [Empathic Sprite HP remaining: 46/60]
Seeing your little sprite get mauled, something within you snaps. The air around Etta bends again, and while she manages to calm it down after a moment by concentrating, the effort leaves her panting. Taking advantage of the lull in the action, the Sprite causes a soft rain to fall on you, leaving you feeling stronger and refreshed.
"Nicely done." Etta says, steadying her breath, her eyes still a burning orange. "Time for Lesson Two, then: never count a foe out!"
[Henrietta HP remaining: 105/150] [MC HP remaining: 59/75] [Empathic Sprite HP restored to full!]
[End Round 3]

Specials can't crit unless otherwise specified, sadly. That's a property of attacks only for the most part.

dragon22391 posted... 1) Freeze is the most immensely avoidable spell in the history of spells. Goddamn Jake can avoid it, if I'm remembering correctly; Dark Seraphim would have no problems doing so.
2) Stun is mostly negligible even assuming Hotsuma could hit him with it. Yuri, in the very beginning of SH2, long before obtaining power on the scale of Dark Seraphim takes an item called the Mistletoe to his heart -- this being an explicitly anti-Yuri holy artifact and, while weakened, still is able to fight.
3) Kan: There is a very large difference between being able to tank a nuke and able to avoid being frozen. They're not the same thing. You can have nigh impervious skin and still be vulnerable to being frozen solid. Not to mention the dragon Jake does use this own is nowhere near that level, and he's taken out by gunfire.
4) Isaac is a different case than Dark Seraphim because he has no canon supporting his ability to create such large scale destruction. It's unreasonable -- and mechanicy -- to assume that because the terrain isn't utterly destroyed post-battle in an RPG, that he has no such power, particularly since Dark Seraphim has destroyed the entire city of shanghair.
5) Calling out his wings are you ****ing serious xfd - Y'know, looking at Bryan Fury, I wouldn't expect him to be able to take a tank shell and live to tell about it!
The dragon either doubles or quadruples the next most powerful enemy in HP totals, has by far the most powerful attack, gives you a crapload of XP, etc. etc. etc. He's a bonus boss, and he's definitely a greater dragon. Maybe a younger one, I haven't checked if it's mentioned it's not ancient, but you don't mess with it if you don't have the spirit charm that lets you drain him to hell. Sure, he dies to gunfire, but since it happens after a godlike spirit blasts it, that isn't as much of a knock as you would believe.
Further...if I'm not mistaken, this is the cannon Jake uses:
"The Panther Assault Cannon, designed and produced by Panther Industries, is your only choice for heavy assault weapon. Firing a stable superplast explosive warhead, the Panther has proven effective against both hard and soft targets. Comes with shoulder-strap and hip-bracing gear for stable hip-fire. The Panther fires specialized 25mm HV grenades with a double-sized propellant charge. Impact from one of these grenades deals 2D6 damage beyond the normal damage for such a round. Rounds also cost 2.5x the normal cost for 25mm grenades."
That's pretty strong for a portable weapon. Certainly not like it's pistol fire. And if that isn't the cannon, it's a gauss weapon - arguably even more impressive, but I figured this fits the bill better.

Yes, you can. THe enemy's actions may render the plan void, but if so your actions will always be resolved in whatever way is most advantageous to you.

Not convinced Dark Seralu can win this. Drak has a point about Freeze - the dragon is actually way bigger than he thinks he is (20 feet? Try 20 meters), and he's a part of a species of insanely powerful beings. Greater dracoforms are described as being able to tank a nuke and survive, so if Freeze can affect it I see no reason it couldn't freeze Dark Seralu. Call it gameplay mechanics, but the way that dragon is presented makes lots of sense within Jake's universe - you need to summon a ludicrously poweful spirit to drain most of its health away to have a chance to defeat it, and it still is the toughest enemy in the game afterward.
What I'm not entirely convinced by is whether the team can harm it, though. Sure, it's frozen, but what of it? It's still an incredible powerful being, and killing it will take some serious firepower. What's the best Team Cursed Swords can bring to bear?

How much damage you did (AKA next to nothing). Each enemy you face has a set of...animations, for lack of a better term, to flavorfully describe their reactions to abilities and attacks. Dodges will be clearly indicated when they occur (they weren't in the first fight because I R dum, sorry about that).

Ehh, use updated visuals IMO. It isn't the art that is a draw about DX anyway.

And speaking of fanboyism... The enemy pantheon and Jax were 4-1 and 5-1 at one point. Then I happened. I think my favorite moment was when Panth, Brand and Lux were beating on our inner mid tower, and the Morgana sarcastically said "and what are you going to do, take them all on?". Cue jumping in, enemy team getting ulted by Nox, and killing Lux and Panth while Brand ran away crying. Morg had to try so hard to come up with a good retort when I replied "you were saying, Morg?". :)

Jarv: "EQ smack shield lol"
Literally pantheon's combo but better until you get low. Don't mean any disrespect by that, but let's get serious and not fanboyistic realo.

but this just goes back to "I'm going to arbitrarily set up a hypothetical situation where I could totally kick your ass and generally be useless against any other scenario"
I didn't pick something to specifically crash the party. I just picked something that kicked my ass a couple days ago as Morde. :P

Heroic_CactObo posted... I just wrecked an intelligent garen like 3 hours ago and proceeded to go 11/4 by 25th minute.
1. Maokai starts mana manip and carries clarity, panth starts longsword + pot 2. Maokai spams saplings to keep people out of the brush, panth spams spears to make use of mana regen and to charge maokai's passive dealing anywhere from 100-300 depending on spear level and if you have brutalizer yet or not 3. Anyone laning against you is zoned or feeding pantheon. Everyone 4. ??? 5. Profit
this doesn't happen 4 times in a row on accident, I can assure you that it does indeed wreck faces
Counterpoint: if we're discussing two-man setups, I put Orianna + Garen forward and suddenly both Mao AND panth are chipped to death while being unable to close in because lol Orianna.

I don't think you get how LFF works.
So you have the Square vote, the PC vote, the joke vote, the mature vote and who knows what else vs. Nintendo's core fanbase. That's more than what FF7 can pull in alone Leon, you realize that right?

TheConductorSix posted... Who is bringing cloth armor and 5 pots outside of a few specific people? Like, you're making completely unreasonable means to stop one specific champion. If you're getting flat armor and cloth armor to stop pantheon in lane he's already won.
Jax. Tryndamere. Xin Zhao. Mordekaiser if he has to go bot for some reason. Irelia. Jarvan IV. Wukong. Basically, if you send a tanky DPS to Pantheon they can counteritemize him and make him cry. Yes, he beats some Euro-style lanes (i. e. Corki+Soraka still trolls him because of the huge armor buff), but he's not as strong as you think he is.
