Why would a movie ever cost $55? I know 3D costs a bit more than regular Blu-Ray, but I've never seen anything over $40.

I'm not necessarily talking about your favourite movies, or those that are "Best Picture" type movies that everyone agrees are great... just movies that you believe accomplished everything they set out to, and ended up being the best movie they could possibly be. If you're one of those people that believe nothing is perfect and anything could always be improved, just get out now.

While I wouldn't count this as one of my personal favourites, I'd have to say Taken. That movie was just so much fun. There was nothing profound or thought provoking in it's narrative, but it was just so incredibly entertaining that I felt it did everything right.

The other is even less serious, and I'm not sure that anyone will share this opinion but the movie is Piranha (3D). Comedy horror is such a weird genre since the movie has to be kind of dumb so that you can laugh at some of the deaths rather than feeling bad for the characters, yet you also need to care somewhat about the protagonist or the entire movie just ends up being stupid. I feel like Piranha toed this line perfectly. I mean the movie is really, really dumb. But it's also funnier than most straight-up comedies I've seen. It also has the best use of gore I've seen in movies, period. I'm generally not a fan of gore (even though I love horror/slasher flicks) but the gore in Piranha actually had me laughing out loud . All-around one of the best movies I've ever seen, and it accomplished everything a movie in that genre sets out to do.

I don't expect everyone to write as much as this, but I'd appreciate a line or two at least. Really curious to know what choices other people have.

no seriously, the pirated version can be equal by any level you want from a technical standpoint. that's really not an issue, you'd just need to get the higher quality stuff. fact is you can also get it at a variety of other, smaller levels too. like sure you can get the fully uncompressed 1080p vid with FLAC, or you can compromise here and there.

For popular movies, sure. But some are just much harder to find in 1080p. MKVs are also kind of a hassle when you want to watch things on your TV, especially when dealing with subs and such. It's definitely possible to get around all of that, but I don't see how it is easier or better than simply having it on disc which often comes with it's own digital copy.

When it comes to movies, the pirated version is pretty much never superior unless you're one of those nerds who prefers to watch movies on their laptops or something.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/05/dvds-and-blu-rays-will-now-carry-two-unskippable-government-warnings/

Well, I suppose those are superior for those who get a hard-on for piracy warnings. And unskippable trailers. Because those are fun.

Yep, because 15 seconds of piracy warnings are enough to negate all of the extras found on physical copies of movies. Not to mention that the audio/video quality on a Blu-Ray is always better than that which you'd find online. I can understand people not caring about the difference, but it's absolutely crazy to say that a pirated version is "better". I can't speak to unskippable trailers because I haven't come across any.

I can understand what fool said about being able to play things on anything, but that just speaks to digital distribution being superior, not piracy. The highest quality rips pretty much never look or sound as good as the disc.

"There is no reason to buy movies when you can just pay $8 a month for Netflix".

I don't see whats wrong with this one. I never watch movies more then once, so I see little reason to own something that has no point other then to sit on my shelf when I can just watch it on Netflix.

I just find this one annoying because if I'm buying something, it's probably because it's not on Netflix. I don't like spending money just for the hell of it... so I pay for a Netflix subscription so that I can still have all the entertainment I need while supporting the people who produce it. Generally speaking, I'm not going to pay for a disc that is "just the movie". Unless they're going to throw in some good extras then I probably will just pass on seeing it altogether. As good as it feels to support the things I love, movies aren't exactly cheap, and I think it's important for companies putting out DVDs and Blu-Rays to make them worth buying. For example I really want to see the movie Chronicle... but if they're going to give me 1 deleted scene, a camera test and a couple of trailers... I'm going to pass on it. At least until it finds itself in a bargain bin.

I don't know much about the RIAA or the MPAA and which products they're getting paid for, but if they are going to benefit from my purchase of films, and there is no other way for me to pay the people producing it... I'm still going to buy it. It's unfortunate that terrible people might be getting a portion of my money, but I don't think that nobody getting my money is a better alternative to that.

It's all opinions. I literally said what's important is different for everyone. And in saying that you can only comment on what you've done, you took the wrong meaning of what I was trying to say. I meant that in talking about anything, I can only express opinions with my own experience. Meaning that I can attest to the ways that traveling in this case, has benefit me personally, and in speaking about travel I'm assuming that others would experience things in a similar way. Kind of like if I'm telling somebody about eating a great burrito, I'm going to talk about assuming that they would taste experience the taste in a way similar to how I did, rather than qualifying the statement by saying "You may think it's nothing special at all, but if you're anything like me, you're going to love this burrito". Not everyone is the same, but if I didn't think most people would benefit by having these experiences, I wouldn't be suggesting them.

I don't really care if anyone travels or not, but I'd consider myself much worse off if I had never left Canada and my only experience with other cultures had come from TV and movies. If that sounds condescending, then I guess it is. It's just my view.

Also, not sure if you know who you're talking to, but using a drug analogy to show that trying new things isn't always good is pretty much the worst possible example... although I admit few people will claim that cocaine has improved their lives.

Well, I think people are generally only qualified to speak on things that they have experienced or observed for themselves, and as such I'm using my experience traveling to say that it's an important thing that people should do. I know people that have went places and not enjoyed the experience at all, wishing that they just stayed at home and did the usual for a couple of weeks instead. I'm not saying this never happens. What I personally think is important about getting out of your routine is even a broader topic, and to put it shortly, it's about being humbled. I think that doing the same thing, hanging out with the same people, eating the same foods, watching the same types of movies, etc. causes people to think they "know" things. "I know what I like, and that's that. I don't need to try new things."

I'm sure a lot of people are happy living this way, and that's fine. But in my personal opinion is that it's a terrible way to live. I think people should be open to trying different things and I believe it's very important to be humbled, and reminded that there is a lot you don't know, or can't know about the world, or even yourself without actually doing it.

Traveling is just a great way to try a bunch of different things at the same time. You're going to meet a bunch of people that act completely different than anyone you know or have different views than the people you normally spend time with because they grew up in a different culture. You'll probably try a few new activities or foods that aren't popular where you're originally from, and you're going to see cities or landscapes that are vastly different than the ones you've experienced at home. It's not necessarily about traveling, it's about getting out of your comfort zone.

I agree with Realo, the show does a great job of presenting the idea that there really are no "good guys", just people with different motivations. It's hard to look at anyone as evil when the reasons for their actions are presented so well. It may seem as though it's easy to cast the Lannisters as being evil and the Starks as good, but when you listen to Tywin and Cersei's conversations in season 2 it's clear that they're both just trying to protect the things that they care about, Cersei her children, and Tywin his name. Even the Wildlings who were shown to be somewhat faceless villains as the series began are now shown to have humanity and it appears they may even be in the right as they kill rangers from the Night's Watch.

Everyone has different reasons for making the choices they do, and it's hard to judge any of the characters as being right or wrong in any given situation.

Never understood why it was so hated. Season 1 was great, and the rest just weren't as good. I've seen much worse TV, and I do not regret watching it until the end. The only part I truly found "bad" was the first half of season 3 (AKA Volume 3). I actually really enjoyed parts of Volume 4. Especially the flashbcks with young Angela and her sister. It wrapped up in a really weird way because they probably needed more time to end things the way they wanted.. but again, it wasn't even close to being one of the worst shows on TV.

What's important is different for everybody. Now some of you may look at this list and wonder why I skipped some people... I didn't skip anyone, and I made a list as the artists were suggested. Some people chose not to read the first post and I just ignored their posts until they corrected their mistakes. So I'm doing these in the order that were received, or should I say, accepted.

Com Truise - Cyanide Sisters EP (Nee)

I'll start by saying I hate the name. I really, really hate it. There is nothing clever or funny about taking a famous figure and switching the first sounds in each part of the name. I know there are a lot of other groups who have done this, but thankfully I can't remember the name of any of them.. except for a semi-popular Russian electro producer named Mord Fustang who kind of blew up last year. Yeah, the name sucks... but fortunately, the music does not.

I wish I could differentiate between the different tracks here, but none of them stand out enough for me to want to check the track names as I listen to the EP (on the third playthrough right now). I guess I understand what people are saying when they listen to my trance mixes now. It's good enough that I just want to have it on in the background, but I don't feel the need to actually dedicate my attention to it. Furthermore, it doesn't sound like music I should be listening to indoors at all. Literally every track makes me think of the same image, driving through a city at night at about 20 mph. Specifically in a car that looks like this, in the year 1985.

external image

I'm definitely going to keep this EP on my phone (which is a bigger honour than you might think) just in case I ever find myself in that situation and I need some music to complete the experience. If the rest of Com Truise (ugh) sounds similar to this, they'll probably find themselves in a few of my playlists.

People get indignant about their pirating and make it sound as if you're wrong for actually paying for things. I'm not sure if this just happens a lot to me since I work selling music, movies and games but I've noticed that a lot of people are really proud of the fact that they pirate stuff. Like I'll be looking at movies on Blu-Ray and they'll say something like "Why would you ever buy movies? You can just download every movie for free?" or the slightly more tolerable "There is no reason to buy movies when you can just pay $8 a month for Netflix".

I mean when I was a kid with no money or job piracy seemed like the only way I could watch most movies.. but I feel like if someone has the means, they should just pay for it. Or at least not act like it's stupid to pay for things that you can get for free. I've recently gotten into purchasing movies on Blu-Ray an I can honestly say that I feel a lot better doing it. The quality is generally much better than that which is found online, and special features (especially feature commentary) are almost always great. I feel like between buying a few movies a month and having a Netflix subscription there is no reason to pirate movies at all.

Music is a bit more tricky for me though. I'll buy CDs from artists I really enjoy, but I often justify my music piracy by seeing the artists that I like in concert, rather than paying for their CDs.

Piracy never really bothered me in the past, but now I'm starting to understand why people get so angry about it.

I just realized that I basically did an album review for the fist rec rather than talking about the artist which was the original plan. I won't be talking in depth about tracks from here on out.

Hot Chip (CasanovaZelos)

Hot Chip is one of those bands that I already knew I was into, yet I was too lazy to actually check out their stuff. I knew they were vaguely electronic since a lot of people who are into dance music love them, but there are a lot more "real" instruments in their music than I was expecting. I didn't really sit there and watch the music videos the whole way through, but I glanced at them here and there and I enjoy the fact that the group doesn't seem to take themselves too seriously, which I definitely appreciate, because nothing is that serious.

Overall, I'm not crazy about the music, but I enjoy it. Maybe it's just the tracks you chose, but they don't seem to go hard enough in either way to really grab me. The more upbeat tracks aren't quite enough to really get me moving, and the slower one wasn't really emotional enough to get me to feel anything. I mean it's decent music, great even if we're talking about "Ready for the Floor" but nothing I'm crazy about. If they have more tracks with the energy and groove of Ready for the Floor I could really see myself getting into this band.

You are an awful and flat out incorrect person if you think new york style cheesecake is somehow better than Italian style cheesecake.

It f***ing isn't. Italian style cheesecake is far, far superior and if you think otherwise you're quite simply just wrong.

Upon doing some research I honestly have no idea what type of cheesecake it is. They all look the same to me and Google is no help. But I'm doubting that I'd prefer Italian anything to something that isn't Italian.

Also, Justin Hammer still sucks. It's easy to tell what they were trying to do with the character, but he just came off a little too silly for a guy that's supposed to be the head of one o fthe largest arms manufacturer's in the world. I know that it's possible for an idiot to run a huge company, but his character was just a bit too much for me. Not sure if I even smiled at a single one of his lines other than maybe his dancing entrance for the demo or when Cheadle fires the "Ex-Wife" if that counts.

So, Captain America was p. good. Liked the origin story, but it's a shame the best part of the movie happened in a montage. It kind of made the scene where his bestie dies fall a bit flat.. wasn't really connected to the character much and it seemed like it was supposed to have more of an impact than it did. I wasn't completely engaged by the action, but that's more likely the result of me being tired now. It was nice seeing Cap bash dudes with the shield, but I was basically just waiting for the movie to end, rather than being truly excited to see how it unfolds. I guess after 3 superhero movies in the same night you get pretty familiar with the formula.

The ending was easily the best of the bunch... although Iron Man 1's ending would have been great if I had to wait a couple years between movies. I'd have to rank them like this..

Thor>Iron Man>Captain America>Iron Man 2

Oh, totally forgot to mention that Heimdall was indeed the **** in Thor. I probably have more to say, but I'm tired.

Alright, food eaten. I can't reply to everything since I don't want to take over 30 minutes between movies... but I'll address a little.

I can see how Kat Dennings could annoy some people since she was just "comic relief" and I can see how people would get annoyed if they don't find her one-liners funny, but she wasn't even half as bad as the Hammer dude in Iron Man 2, **** that guy. He made every scene terrible.

The romance wasn't bad either, I'd call it understated if anything. I mean there was a tender moment as they fell asleep under the stars, Portman crying over Thor's dead body, and then the kiss when he went back to Asgard. I mean that was basically it. I can recall like one lingering shot while she first drove him the car to retrieve Mjolnir, but it was literally about a 2 second gaze. Didn't bother me in the least.

Final battle was weak, but the other battles made up for it. And Hemsworth's voice makes up for any qualms you have with the writing. I could listen to that man talk all day.

Now if you'd excuse me, it's time for the Captain.

What the hell guys, Thor was ****ing incredible. And I'm not just talking to the people in this topic. I mean in general people really only talk about the Iron Man being awesome and the rest of the films just being decent superhero movies, but goddamn was Thor great. The first half hour with the fight on Jotunheim was amazing. All the CG just looked so good.. basically convinced me to buy a 3D TV.

I honestly think it was both funnier and had better action sequences than either Iron Man. Hemsworth is a ****ing stud. I loved pretty much everything there was in that movie. Seriously top-notch and I wasn't expecting to enjoy any of the four to that degree. I can't see how Captain America could top that, but I'm pretty excited either way.

Oh, and I'm definitely going to fail the cheesecake challenge. I was on a good pace having 3/8 pieces eaten 15 minutes into Iron Man 2, but I still haven't eaten another since then. I'm taking a very short break for dinner #2 right now, and I'll have at least another piece.. but I doubt I can down the rest tonight.

Iron Men watched. The first half of 2 was pretty "meh" and I'm seriously bummed that Terrence Howard was replaced since he's one of my favourite actors... but Cheadle grew on me by the end of it all.

Did you see Incredible Hulk?

Nah, it really put me off how there is a different guy playing him in the Avengers so I figured after I saw that movie, I'd decide if I wanted to go back and watch Norton Hulk to see what it was all about.

Onward to THOR!

Alright, alphabetical order it is. Cap, Iron Mans, Thor.

Seriously though, I'm going in. Along with watching 4 movies in a session, I may eat an entire cheesecake tonight. This will be a day to remember.

watch them in the order they came out

and Iron Man 2 is fine, better than Thor for sure

I figured this made the most sense.

So it'll be Iron Man/2, Thor and then Captain America right?

But I have them all right now and I'm considering going through them ALL in a single session. What would be the best order to watch them in? I know they're not really "connected" in the way movie sequels are... but I'm wondering if they threw in some Easter eggs that I should watch out for.

Can't believe Tyran Castle is getting run over like this... seriously might be the best in the game after TFAT.
