I like all the self-referential moments about the show's weird status, like when Titus turned heel because the season had gone on so long that his Redemption Points were now useless, or when Bateman and Maxine basically come to the conclusion that the entire show is some form of eternal damnation that they're stuck in forever so they may as well dominate it.

I just asked a friend about this and his response was "how much are boxing/MMA ppvs?" and I didn't know


UFC PPVs cost the exact same as WWE PPVs: $45 SD/$55 HD.

Boxing PPVs generally run higher I think. I don't follow boxing much but I do know that when they have a card they feel is PPV worthy they charge out the ass for it. As far as which sport can get the biggest buyrates for an individual event goes, boxing is still king, although they can only pull it off a couple times per year. Mayweather/Pacquiao when/if it happens will probably do the biggest PPV buyrate of this decade over wrestling/MMA/boxing combined. But for the most part, boxing's equivalents to the minor WWE PPVs happen on Showtime/HBO.

HOWEVER Directtv is pulling some bull**** and not letting me rewatch PPVs I have already paid for and that is a huge thing in me buying them-- being able to rewatch them later. If this is not resolved I may just stop ordering them.


DirecTV has always had a policy where PPVs get auto-deleted from your DVR 24 hours after you first watch them.

I can speak from experience that they definitely seem to have forgotten about that for awhile or at least were very inconsistent with it, but it seems that they're back to enforcing it now.

More the former, though there would certainly be a few dream cards that I'd buy no matter the price. Compared to other mediums, that is a lot of money to drop down on a product, and you're not even getting to see it live. I don't mind paying a premium price for a premium product; I go to a lot of concerts, and most are in the $20-35 range, but I will pay higher for my favourite artists (Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) or for artists I really enjoy but don't tour that often if ever (Radiohead, Prince, Leonard Cohen). The WWE doesn't offer a premium product, they charge an enormous amount for what they offer, and there's little discrepancy in price. I don't mind if the big four are priced high, but I do mind that a PPV every three to six weeks costs $50+.


Sounds like we can count on Icon as a WWE Network subscriber then!

The way I gauge it is that movies are already worth roughly $12, and they're about 1.5-2 hours long. Hence, if I'm getting a bit more entertainment in 2.5-3 hours, I'd be willing to pay maybe $20 at the most.

And I think the crux of my question is this:

Is it just a general "No 3-hour wrestling show period, no matter how good, is worth $55 of my money" thing, or is it "The show is not likely to be good enough to be worth $55, but if it was better, it might be."

And then if you answer the former, what's the highest amount of money you would pay for a 3-hour wrestling show if it was the best card ever constructed. For Biscuit that seems to be $20.

WWE sent out a survey somewhere asking about the Royal Rumble, why you did or did not buy it, did you enjoy it, etc.

Since I know that I am one of few B8ers to purchase PPVs regularly, I'll post their question (plus response options) about why you don't because I am curious to see your responses as well.


-Due to the economy, I've limited my spending on WWE pay-per-view.
-The announced matches did not interest me.
-I was not interested in the main event participants.
-I was unsatisfied with previous WWE pay-per-view purchases.
-I preferred to read the results online.
-Storylines leading into the Royal Rumble did not interest me.
-I opted to watch other non-WWE pay-per-views in January.
-I rarely purchase any WWE pay-per-views
-I tried to order the pay-per-view, but couldn't due to technical problems.
-I was satisfied learning the results on TV.
-Everything I need to see is available on WWE's weekly TV shows.
-I'm generally less interested in WWE.
-I've already spent my allotted expenditures on WWE pay-per-views
-The matches were similar to previous pay-per-view events.
-I didn't know the date or time of the event.
-I was not available to watch the event.
-I thought the match outcomes would be too predictable.
-WWE's TV programs were not focused enough on Royal Rumble.
-I preferred to watch Royal Rumble clips on YouTube.

Which ones mostly apply to you?

Jak, I would like to address your "roster is thin at the top" thing though. Let's compare to when the WWE was actually good, say, attitude era?

After WM in 1998, as far as I can tell (and I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong on this) there were a whopping TWO people on the active roster who had EVER been champion. Austin (current) and Taker (former). Over the course of the next two years they'd go on to add a whopping four more: Kane (for about a minute), Rock, Foley, and HHH.

Let's compare to today. I'm going to try and list all the "former world champions" currently on the active roster. I'm sure I'll miss at least one because there's so many.

Cena
Orton
Miz
Christian
Rey
ADR
Swagger
Kane
Punk
Jericho
Mark Henry
Big Show

and that's not even including the guys "on the edges" who aren't really active but could be called upon to do a match if needed: Khali, Booker, HHH, Taker, etc. Also not counting Dolph's completely illegitimate reign.

Sure, some of this is due to two titles, some is due to crappy MITB booking, but I think in all honesty, every one of those guys (except possibly Swagger) COULD, with the proper booking, be a main-event level star and dominate at the very top of the card.


Yep, the roster was very thin at the top in 1998 too, thinner than it is now. I'm not denying that there's a crapload of TALENT today, just that there's no one outside of Cena/Orton/Punk who has been positioned as "Well this guy is clearly dominant, anyone who conquers them must be pretty incredible" the same way that Austin conquered Bret, HBK, and Taker. Whenever someone like Wade or Del Rio gets any momentum, they get it all swept out from under their feet before they can solidify it.

Split brands in 1998 would have been awful.

(you forgot Big Show on your list of new World Champs over the next 2 years [and Vince but that's Vince])

Of course, every name you listed today COULD be positioned as a strong main-eventer. That's what they're working on now with CM Punk, and they're doing a good job thus far, Triple H hiccup aside. But you're right, it takes strong, consistent booking, which is not something WWE is known for.
