TopicDCEU vs. sequel trilogy: Bigger waste of potential?
Wanglicious

i mean the DCEU issue is that it's wasted potential on material that very clearly didn't need to be a waste. we know what good comics are, we know that if you adapt them it can be great, DC just had no fucking clue how to do that. so in terms of wasted potential, DC.

the sequel trilogy meanwhile was coming in with a semi-blank slate and though they sucked, can't say they had the highest expectations in the end. especially the third.

Okay, what's a better way to stay informed?

if trying to stay current on daily things, can keep track of a channel or two that don't upload a crazy amount of content but do so regularly (e.g., phillip de franco, zaid tabani/freestyle the news).

you could change what you're trying to be current on. if it's crypto stuff or whatever, coffee's two channels are great for it. if it's tech related, gamersnexus has you good, as does one of LTT's various channels. if it's on how companies are trying to fuck you, rossmann remains king. changing this focus has the added benefit of it being something you actually care for and have interest in.

the basic answer is you don't need to be informed on everything, you don't need to care about everything, and it's fine if things happen without you being aware. unless it's literally your job or you find entertainment value in it, prioritize anything else.

i'd put this rumble somewhere in the top two categories there, arguable excellent but definitely at least great. it was neatly divided in chapters:

luchador start + Penta push (was he iron man?) + Gable being an absolute god
clean with Bron/Fatu + fun stuff happen + mid upper card
Reigns + Drew + bloodline stuff + main eventish people
Cena to finale, with a notable standoff and Logan being a shit heel.

didn't really feel like a lull or lazy at some point and everything made sense. ring never got too crowde, it started really quick with a nice gesture between Penta and Rey, and we got a surprise winner who's immensely popular, absolutely needed some kind of push to prove he's at that level, and can say he's earned his place in the main event. all storylines are continued well, including the very long term one of Jey inching closer and closer to Roman's status, he just sped right through the IC phase of it. i put a lot of weight on the surprise finale.

dating apps are terrible for both sexes but for entirely different reasons.

men get lucky if even 5% of the attempts are a match and odds are good that it's a scam anyway. that's the male experience really, try a lot, get nothing, and when you do finally get a match you need to instantly verify because there's a real chance they're gonna ask for money within the next week tops. realistically you're batting 1% at best if you're a normal dude.

women get bombed with a ton of guys but only pick like 10% of them and they tend to pick the same 10%. so the pool doesn't really exist for the vast majority of dudes and women end up wondering why they only meet shitty dudes. eventually women learn to filter more and more of that and get better at it but until then, pretty shit. if it's sex, easy. if it's relationship, good luck.

no matter what app you use the gap between matching is literally close to 20:1, women:men, so nobody's happy.

being closer to the general beliefs here isn't quite what i mean there, all names mentioned (myself included) will have a good number of agreements too. it's more of just seeing this topic as nothing more than what's in the topic, not a reflection of the outside world. you're also not married to the ideals here, you can shrug and laugh at things too. things like that are some easy tells of that "oh, you're not in some sort of political bubble here" that i mean. even if you've got similar beliefs, you're not quite part of that echo chamber that's known to happen.

honestly i'm not sure what "messaging" you're really looking for. but i also don't see things happening outside as that extreme for the most part, a lot is more of a "return to normal" because some stuff was already extreme to the left and - most importantly - ignoring reality. like yeah there's a right wing bend and i disagree with a number of things but most stuff isn't too out there; half the time something is too much for me it's largely by design to test waters (see: dumb attempt to get rid of birthright citizenship).

this opinion of mine meanwhile seems to match well with the general population too so i'm not sure what answer or message is being looked for. just kinda feels like a bubble was popped. which is totally understandable, especially because most here are aligned in a similar way politically, but like... if the person you were looking up to actually believed their shit and they weren't grifting, they aren't gonna bend the knee now. if they are bending then this is the revelation that all those people took you for a ride. there just happen to be a lot of those.

that's a shame about hungary's stats. was hoping it would've had some success because i like that program as it mixes up tax breaks with a stronger family unit, which i absolutely support and want to see more of.

as for who's unhappy more, yeah if you're a single dude in your teens or 20s you're at the bottom. most don't even have a handful of friends, their dating prospects are absolute garbage with a third being virgins still in their mid-20s, and with no chance of getting a home of their own either they're forced to compete with guys in their 30s and 40s who do have the bells and whistles. no shot for growth or success. would they categorize themselves as "unhappy," probably not with that exact language. would they be, absolutely. just gotta see the suicide stats to get that one. nobody cares about 'em, so things spiral downwards, not up.

don't know how well it's going but conceptually a program that supports the ideas of families, including grandparents being paid to help, should go a long way for stability.

both elements of this are the case, though moreso the latter.
he still would've run but obama's team was already behind hillary and were pushing him to just let her do it. we had those reports on how obama's team was "gently pressing" him for weeks, talked up hillary's support, and brought polling data to him to say she'd do better. hence, he was snubbed.

that is not true, no.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is what prohibits that and there's many later laws that further strengthen protections against discrimination.

what he did do was ban affirmative action and DEI programs that receive federal funding/related to federal contractors.

there's a lot of confusion there because the EO's wording includes anti-discriminatory language in it but it's also not a relevant piece to anything in that field.

going stronger against israel - like having the line in the sand be an actual line in the sand - could've pissed people off but it also could've resulted in actual negotiation happening. it's a big "what if," because conventional wisdom says you don't want to piss israel off or go against them as you'll lose significant support. however, if you do absolutely nothing then you've just let them do whatever and have to eat all the negative support. worse, you get cited as a genocide supporter by a not insignificant number of people in an election year and look incredibly weak. that feeling i do think translates very well to the general public; people suck at understanding politics but they do understand if something looks/sounds strong. they might not like the attitude but better to have one than to half ass it.

kinda have gone back and forth on it but in hindsight, do think biden putting his foot down and being actually in charge would've been a million times better, even if people would've said he's anti-israel at that point. just spin it to being pro american. if he looks strong and like a leader, it gives him an edge that doesn't make you think weak old man.

i mean the term Samson Option refers to Israel directly, so yeah they're not gonna back off if push came to shove with Iran.

Gaza's a bit different because it's literally their backyard and any fallout would be felt directly when it comes to nukes. flooding, however, would not have been off the table. wouldn't be the first time that's happened to people from Gaza either, Egypt did it years ago with those tunnels and gave no fucks. i do believe the US made sure the cruelest options weren't taken, we were just weak and Bibi took advantage of that. kinda comes back to Trump's foreign policy more or less being you know 90% how he's gonna be, maybe 95%, but that last bit of doubt goes a long way for at least the visual of strength.

By contrast however this is supposed to be about eight Switches duct taped together!

yeah we're basically going from a chip that was already 2 years old by the time it was in the switch, a 2015 chip, to a very modern custom one by nvidia who is just starting to make their own fully custom chips. that's a pretty great spot to be in power and though it's a year old, digital foundry did cover this and we can expect that to be the minimum value:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czUipNJ_Qqs&t=2s&ab_channel=DigitalFoundry

add in the drastic improvement on RAM and storage speed and you've got a really nice system. even though it's still gonna generally be at the level of 9-12 year old systems (PS4 Pro - PS4), the little cheats it has with DLSS and Ray Tracing will make a pretty big difference, both visually and in framerate, that can make it look better than that. legit the kind of leap we used to see with consoles.

hopefully it does run better because a PC emulator really shouldn't be the best way to experience those games. with the mouse joycon things being true that lends itself credit to all the other rumors, so it'll be interesting having essentially a portable PS4 in power with some DLSS 2 tricks. technically still something that any modern PC can emulate as well but significantly stronger that i can't imagine why things like say, Pokemon, aren't constantly running at 60.

Steve Witkoff was trump's guy and by the reports he's the one who finalized the deal. everyone's working off two things: 1) the video of Qatar's Prime Minister smiling and walking with him after the ceasefire meeting, and 2) this article from times of israel:

https://www.timesofisrael.com/arab-official-trump-envoy-swayed-netanyahu-more-in-one-meeting-than-biden-did-all-year/

which the url sums up the story there.

now it's possible that they're lying, it's possible that the two anonymous Arab officials in the article aren't real, and it's possible that this really is just heavy propaganda to make trump look good and biden look weak. and no doubt biden did have a role in keeping things somewhat steady, though that's never gonna be the story; right now it's just "Trump did what Biden couldn't".

that's not really the context of my statement there. political talking point of the democrats has been pro immigration and it's to get the latino voterbase. that becomes less relevant over time because people settle in, generations happen, and the more conservative values override that.

Basically, once the immigrants no longer consider themselves immigrants, they get on that "fuck you, I got mine" bandwagon?

honestly i don't think that's the case for most. for those who came in illegally, became legal, and are then closing the door yeah, that's the only category who really experience this. for the rest, that just never comes up: second and third gen are just straight up legal, raised here, and not immigrants at all. if you're a first gen who came in legally or were an actual refugees, anything involving caravans or illegal immigration won't be relevant, that's not the door you took so it's not the one you're slamming. for legal migrants who feel that way towards other legal ones then yeah, same hypocrisy.

the main transition i'd say is why immigration was the issue for latinos in the past and i'd put it straight back to the conservative values: religion and family. so let's take that first gen of 40 years ago: the standard was something like the man comes to the US to get a paycheck here to send back to his family in a third world hispanic country. he's also actively trying to get them here, legally or not, so that he can be with his family - law's not the concern, just the immigration is. related to this, freedom to work and the status of the economy, since there's no point being here if the paycheck ain't significantly higher value.

over time enough of this happened, they had kids, and those kids had kids. 3+ generations in, the immigration concern is fully removed. their family is here now, maybe they've got cousins or something to send money back to, but at that point all they care about is still freedom to work (which will also evolve to other "freedoms" we're used to in the US) and the economy. this is while still being a family first, religious culture, so on all ends they'll trend conservative. any messaging that targets immigration no longer works on them because they've effectively "grown out" of it. for everybody else, they never really were a target of it, maybe the second gen saw some of it but what they primarily saw were legal processes, so illegal immigration rhetoric won't work well on them. i wouldn't put either as they "shut the door" as much as it's "their primary value is still the same and they aren't the target."

Latinos are generally conservative who just like some of the Democrats' messaging. religious, family driven, and the two general principles within politics generally revolve around freedom and the economy. Dems love to make it about immigration but that gets less relevant the longer generations stay and the more first generations settle in.

Israel/Hamas ceasefire deal reached. Wont be anything like the end of it but good that the worst will stop for now.

the craziest part about this is that it's literally trump's fault.
the deal is roughly the same deal that they've had for 7+ months and israel is supposed to be signing it because trump's guy went over and put pressure.

so basically, those voters who withheld their vote from harris because of israel/palestine were 100% right to do so. if that was their issue, trump solved it before getting into office.

top of my head...

if it's something like Slime's world then having no powers sucks a lot but you can gradually find yourself a skill in the world - see Yuuki.

if i got Subaru/save points then i know i'm fucked. i'm finding that out only after dying and i'm totally on a guided path, this is just plain awful. but i will pick Rem, even if i end up dying and coming back to the true path after.

if it's something like Jobless Reincarnation uh... do i have powers? also depends on what the isekai type is, if i'm like a certain character then once again, i got jack shit for powers and need to work my way up from nothing.

if i do got power, also need to make sure that my power isn't a booby trap. some isekai have that as a choice without the person knowing it. usually ends up being written as side characters who die early.

do kinda hope it's one of those where i can pick skills off a board. i like those a good amount.

Heck as far as I can tell Republicans hate Sanders basically every bit as much as Clinton if not more. Slamming him as a COMMUNIST could have easily been enough to swing undecided voters.

party republicans hate bernie more but a lot of the global effect right now is just having leaders that aren't listening to the working class. bernie's very popular on that front, as is trump, which is where they overlap. i think bernie would perform better with them because you can tell he genuinely does believe in what he's saying and he pisses off all the right people that trump does as well. voters will fall in line eventually but a lot of trump's base aren't typical republicans and that's what the hope is there.

the flipside of this is that a lot of hillary supporters are absolutely not bernie ones and would've voted trump instead, for largely the same reasons. that could've been funny to see, because no way the donor class is gonna pick bernie over trump and you would've had a lot of media attacks in that direction. so if you're looking for scandals or ways to swing voters, yeah it would've been a lot of personal attacks on bernie and it might enough too. this is all being said with a lot of hindsight though.

Bernie wins the undecided voters by a lot is why he thrashes Trump

That was an anti establishment election. Republicans ran to it, Democrats didn't.

oh yeah, this is more or less where i fall on bernie 2016 as well and why 2016 was such a pivotal election for the democrats. they chose to go with the tribe vs. tribe dynamic that we had before, whereas republicans managed to be a bit better at understanding the number of people who hate both (while paradoxically wanting to be a part of one) and want something different. 2020's kill of bernie was just grinding the heel of nope, same establishment as before. so it is nice to see him write pieces talking shit about the dems.

Yeah there was excitement but it took a while for that to seep through to the general populace, many of whom had no opinion. Looking at fivethirtyeights tracker, her vote was basically static from September.

funny enough, i think the problem is the excitement never seeped to the general populace properly. it was Democrats who were super excited, the DNC was built as a show-of-shows for harris. september and october were supposed to be months where all that energy could move from just "Democrat candidate" to "candidate" but it didn't, because she's not very good at that. that's roughly where i think the general line is with her and why she keeps failing within 4 months: she's good with donors, speeches, and the Democratic base, but once she deals with a wider audience and the (lower case) democratic base, she's flat. i do think she got less popular by late september, early october with her party and those who were initially excited, that's best reflected by the number of democrats who started complaining about her takes on Gaza and more right-wing positions. losing them meant losing people who were cheering her on like crazy and we were in a more democrat vs. republican position, as opposed to Name vs. Trump. if she could maintain that momentum, i stand by she would've won.

538 was probably the best marker overall but that's partially because nate silver also understood that the polling data wasn't quite telling the story. dude was mocked for basically saying that even if the polling said 50/50, it's not and trump's got it. that's kinda where i put sept/oct as.

Isnt this basically the opposite of the trends? She started way behind and caught up.

she was basically there by the DNC which was also roughly the height of her popularity and the attention she was grabbing. was in late september where she started to fade because she couldn't just do press conferences, had to do real interviews, and by october all the energy that existed was gone.

like you don't need to look past this topic to see the way that entire sequence went down. from "holy shit, joe's out and there's someone new" to the complete change of atmosphere, hope, and literally a billion dollars in a month, she was it for that moment. once that moment changed though so did her value as a candidate and unfortunately for her, she's really, really bad at keeping momentum.

Then by that logic wtf happened to Harris? She had like no personal controversies.

harris is that unlikeable and 3 and a half months was enough time for people to know her and go "nah." kinda like last time she ran, she legit has a staying power of <4 months before people just don't want her. any attachment she had to the current president also didn't help because people have very, very strong negative opinions on biden's term which inversely gave them a positive view of trump's.
