after that, Frog becomes a permanent party member.

Mitsurugi is a less agile, strong, and skilled swordsman who relies mostly on strength and technique. that's the overlap. considering Frog himself wants to do it and we're dealing with a silent protagonist who seems to say yes to everything and is seen training in the opening vid, it's extremely likely that this was a regular occurrence. basically Crono should be used to dealing with that kind of fighter and Frog is a better version.

while technically hypothetical, you do have Frog himself explicitly state direct interest in fighting Crono when they run into each other the first time. it's not visibly shown to you but it's extremely likely that it happened. both have an interest in it, there's respect between 'em, etc. though if anything i think you'd take issue to my saying Frog is a better Mitsurugi.

i'd take Crono over Mitsurugi simply because Frog exists. if Crono's been fighting with and sparring with a guy who's stronger, faster, and more agile, then there's little reason to think Crono couldn't beat Mitsurugi too.

taki's one of those that i'd take over him without magic. with it... closer fight, depends on where they're at/what they're doing. but she should be capable of dealing with his higher speed. most of the rest shown there, they'd lose.

the main thing cutscene X Strike shows is that some of those attacks really are going to be very literal translations between FMV cutscene and gameplay move. it's the exact same thing. so that then gets you to the rest of his moveset - what would be practical, what wouldn't. well, Confuse would be. its focus is speed. and that'd be one of the main techniques to overcome with him if we're talking just a sword fight.

to be fair, that's probably even before the tank. that's the route to the castle and he's only teaming with Marle. it's before the journey even began since that's the only time the two are alone together.

after that you've got the rest of the game, him fighting better enemies, better training, sparring partners, unlocked magic, etc.

- for being "unimpressive" outside of that, he's actually keeping up with Ayla while scaling the mountain. meaning that despite her jumping up rocks and being physically superior to him, he's kept up with her and you can see him reach the top of that mountain a few seconds behind her. which once again plays up him being strong and fast.
- in plot, he's been training too. but you don't seem to value that aspect.

Like for reference, SMT jobberony demons suplex subway trains. Like you know those bullet-shaped ones? Yeah, those. Dante is a high-level ally for the SMT3 Nocturne main character, whose power level is unreal. It's so high that he's a bonus boss in another game where your party is a bunch of 5/weeks who do things like outfly fighter jets on pure speed alone and he can stomp you flat into the dirt anyway. The music that plays there is literally his random encounter theme to hammer home just how insignificant THAT game's party is to him. SMT has a high power level, is what I'm saying.

backing this up here, Dante's showing in SMT: Nocturne is honestly his 3rd best showing.
2nd would be the idea that he'd be at all relevant to Jedah in Capcom Fighting Evolution. like... it's implied that Dante's going to fight him and win at the end.
1st goes to the Project X Zone situation where for some reason he's talking about Jedah, teaming with Morrigan, etc like he belongs in the highest tier of that cast naturally.

he always looks best in his crossovers.
granted, they do all take place after DMC2, which is canonically the last game of the series and we will never, ever get to it.

Yes. Because it's at odds with the rest of the FMV and it's DBZ slop animation. This isn't really that strange. It's the same reason Kirby doesn't get planet busting strength credit.

"Crono is capable of high bursts of speed" is not "at odds" with the rest of anything. that's a normal thing, across multiple video games or other pieces of fiction, and is consistent with what the rest of the game shows you in attacks (Crono is fast) and gameplay (Crono is with a high speed stat). this is an attack that he uses in the game in exactly the same way it's shown to you in the cutscene. so... yes, what you're doing IS strange. hell, you're comparing it to Kirby in a side mini game. what you're seeing there in the CT opening is... what you see in the game. in a same game where he cuts through metal with his sword early on, in a game where a frog gains a magical sword and cuts through a mountain, somehow you refuse to believe that Crono is capable of extreme bursts of speed even when it's shown to you in a cutscene.

There's not really any real point where he hits a plot power spike to put him above human levels aside from learning magic

but the dragon tank fight happens before the magic.
hell, it happens after he's spent days in prison. he even gets attacked by the guard, flung to the wall, then gets up behind him and wins. for whatever reason it may be, he has "no hype" coming in but is already better than armored soldiers in the game. and it goes up from there.

and while he may have very few clear, visible showings, one of them is in the PS1 intro where he and Frog are using X Strike. the animation has the two turn to streaks of light as they attack the enemy. the cutscene shows... him and Frog turning into two streaks of light as they attack the enemy.

very literal, straightforward showing between cutscene animation and in-game attack. Confuse should have the same apply to it.

Yukiko is pretty much the weakest one of the party i think.
Yu's technically the strongest, though he's still well below sub-Akihiko, Mitsuru, or the robot girls. might have a case for Naoto over him technically too. P4 just honestly isn't that impressive of a universe and Arena is what tries to scale them up to P3. which in the long run ain't that impressive either but that cast is much better. much of the gap between 'em does come down to experience, dangers faced, and age.

FE has a massive gap between Awakening and the rest i think.
part of this is due to tech. in Awakening the enemies are shown much more impressive, but stuff like FE7 looks kinda meh. Ike is an oddball exception in that he was in the transition as they went from not-very-impressive to pretty-impressive.

this would apply to most RPG characters, including Yu.
he's the protagonist and the only party members who must go through every single up until spoilers, at which point it's considered a heavy blow. in that spoilers he was the only one capable of movement, proving that he was the strongest of the party at that point and time. canonically, he's there again for the final battle too.

the double standard i'm pointing out is that you're only really questioning the usual RPG protagonist situation to him but you don't do it to anyone else, including Yu. it's not something you're willing to apply to FF characters or Yu with Persona, it's just something you did to Crono and i presume CT in general.

at what point did giant beasts, tanks, giant ships, surface grazing monsters, etc suddenly mean things that are irrelevant? i mean Crono fought the dragon tank with only Lucca before magic was a thing. that fight ends with Crono leaping on it and cutting through it. that's a super early-game feat that shouldn't serve as anything impressive, it's just a base level to work with.

as for "gratuitous after images," again, the single tech moves are all quite reasonable for animations. this isn't an actual thing.

although this did get me to seeing the opening again. here you go, Kan, second scene with Epoch reaching super speed in flight, this would've been post Dalton upgrades. think those are the only two scenes that show its moving through time, which seems pretty clear to be acceleration-based:

i'd take magic-less Crono over most of the SC universe, including Maxi, as they all tend to be pretty weak. it's mostly a speed advantage for him that makes it. he's one of the fastest units in gameplay, Confuse gives after images, and if you just go more broadly, he's pretty much fits the standard "fast attack with a katana user" trope. though as DC mentioned, he does early in the game stab that tank and this is pre-magical enhancements, so he was just never that weak. should you be able to beat him in speed well enough, you probably win it. SC just doesn't have a lot of super fast guys is all.

Yu's good, Crono's better, Tira just... sucks. basically if it's a highly competent human, they probably win. and this stands out in this fight too because lopen was arguing against Crono as a 1 on 1 versus Tira. yet there's no reason Yu should be better.

if he doesn't always accept his darker side (his shadow) then it'll split from him and won't be his persona anymore. two halves of a person established by a mental bond.

Well, Shadows and Personas are two different things. It's why in 4 you have to defeat your Shadow in order to awaken your Persona.

all persona are shadows, just not all shadows are persona. it needs the extra key factor of being accepted by the person to establish the transformation of one to the other.

Yosuke even said as much in P4A, "But if you accept [your shadow], it becomes a Persona... a power that can protect you."

Shadow Yosuke also says as much.
"That's why I've returned... I'm not your Persona anymore."

and sure enough, Yosuke can't summon his Persona when this happens and is only able to after he accepts the shadow version of himself again.

at the same time, it's a machine that manages to open a gate then fly through it quickly enough to move through time (the initial engines were used like this) and other capabilities were shown to be extremely high. it survived the fall of Zeal without issue and it easily shot down the Blackbird, a flying fortress, post-Dalton upgrading it. hell, you've got individuals like Queen Zeal who, with just a bit of power from Lavos, managed to not only survive the fall of Zeal from inside of it, but also survived it being at the bottom of the sea. bit dishonest to be downplaying Epoch since you can just as easily say it's got an extremely high speed of travel when desired since it does manage to move through time on its own. you don't get many slow ships that can do that.

Chrono Trigger is really gratuitous with after images. It's hard to take them very seriously as an indicator of speed especially considering how slow some of the techs with em look.

well the first part's easy: they're just a lot faster than you seem to think they are.

the second part: people have no problem respecting Omnislash or Lionheart so why should there be a problem respecting CT techs? sure, some of them a bit wonky but so is Supernova. it's not unusual for a game to have some things look reasonable and others look absurd in ways that can't happen, even on the same character (Squall). far as i remember, all of the CT single techs are completely sensible moves with nothing that's too much of an exaggeration save for maybe Black Hole, which can just be explained as being not a real black hole. the general assumption for limit breaks in FF7/8, including by you, is that even though the moves may seem slow the attacks are actually just super fast, happening in a very brief period of time.

the argument is that persona themselves are magical creatures, not that the techniques are used for it. what you're forgetting is that that the user needs to summon Persona. for P3, the Evoker completes the summoning ritual to do so. P4, the TV universe is what allows them to make it work. both ways, you've got a magical process to summon the thing in the first place, therefore no magic = no persona.

Confuse alone is more impressive than anything Yu's done considering it gives Crono afterimages and the text explaining it is that he's moving so fast it's like he's slicing four times at once.

hm... so Carlin's too dirty, won't even bother with Carrington, although comedic songs can be included somewhere. if you want an old classic, Tom Lehrer can be used. "Smut" would probably cross the line but some like Poisoning Pigeons In The Park may be okay.





as for some uh... cleaner stuff with Carlin, Losing Things is a good segment. though he does curse plenty in it and gets a bit perverse a couple times it's long enough that you could use parts and it'd be consistent. even just the opening is nice considering that's the crux of the joke. a 9 minute segment based off of a single question, full of relatable observable moments.

does clean mean you can't really teach Carlin material/observational comedy? because the watered down version that style uses would probably be Louis C.K., who explained it well enough. not sure where the original Carlin interview is, lost that a while ago. but the basic idea is that observation is where everything begins and you notice just one thing that's different from standard expectations. as he put it in About Rape, "every joke needs one exaggeration, every joke needs one thing to be waaay out of proportion." it just kinda grows from there. Carlin's focus was on small things like everyday life and language or bigger things like topics that will never be resolved. these hold well over the years because these topics are ongoing and never end. but if you want a view of the process from a comedian, you can see Louis' bit on that from the Carlin tribute here:

i mean if you're going to get technical with the terrain, Kirby's 8 inches and is light enough for a child to carry him with ease. assuming that puts him at 2 pounds tops, everything that takes place can keep that in mind, as well as the fact that long drops are no problem on those clouds, which would add quite a bit of force to that weight. that's what the terrain actually is. if you were to add fighters to it of course it'd be impossible, so magical mercs adjustments have long since been made, though kan went pretty straightforward with it.

but with that terrain in mind, should you scale the terrain upwards to fit adults just fine and support them with ease, it's an extremely thick "cloud" to the point where it might as well be denser than a thick steel floor.

...so basically, Songbird probably has no issue with it but everyone else wouldn't be able to get through it.

i only have... 35 friend slots.
i'm just not sure what the point is of adding that many.

and Grace is okay. she's got ridiculous HP - we're talking naturally hits 6-7k - and she has a super strong attack with a base 1200% modifier but it kills her. she needs to be on an auto-life team for max effect, so Rem or eventually Rikku. she also has 15% elemental resistance, so with a bit of work she can be great for that too.

eventually she'll get some enhancements too that'll make her much better: Battle Cyborg 1 = 30% elemental resistances (from 15%), 2 = 30% boost to ATK and DEF (from 0%); Unlimited goes to increased buff (150%) or 300% Berserk at 1, at 2 it just is the buff (no more randomness), Last Sequence goes up to 1600%.

thing is, only the first one isn't super expensive on T4 and T5. fortunately the first one's the best because that's a much needed boost.

more like you farmed one TMR by accident.

i'm laughing right now because i actually did buy his unique weapon and never sold it. throw weapon that's +28 ATK and +75 MAG. i imagine that his quality depends on you having that or not. he also had an exclusive materia, Mana, that... honestly sucked. was +55% ATK for 2 turns but... he doesn't have anything that uses his attack stat. even his 6* doesn't look like it'd use that.

with the new passives he's at...

+30% MP
+20% HP
+50% MAG

as for whether he's good or not, he's pretty unique in that he has 7/8 elements on him. the bad character moves would help determine that otherwise. doubt he's anything particularly special but that's pretty neat.

guess i now have three 5* archers. all with unique purposes too! Faye is a super rare niche that prevents counter attacks, Cordelia is a buffer, and Klein is death.

homework in younger years makes sense but as you get older it should decline. reading a book is okay, math is okay, work that they could have done in class but chose not to do is okay, but a lot of other subjects aren't as necessary. as for the issue of starting later... same idea should apply really. when kids are younger, parents need to be able to get them to school before going to work. as they get older that doesn't become necessary anymore.

basically, by the time they reach high school homework should be at a minimum and the day should start later.
but i say this as a person who lives in a city with good transportation. places that need to drive, well, you've got me there.
