You did kinda pave the way for Bob to get the postition it sounds like, but don't hold it against Bob if ya'll were otherwise cool. That's on the company for underestimating you when you first gave the intiial ultimatum.

Bob (fake name) and I were both in the same group (say A). The group has two distinct work categories (say i and ii). We were both top performers for (i), and we supported each other. The other side of the group (ii) already has a lead position; the side of the group (i) that Bob and I worked in did not.

I asked my manager to create a lead role for (i), and allow myself and Bob to apply for it. He rejected. Soon after, I got an opportunity from a different group (say B) to be their lead. I went back to the A manager and asked again, telling him Im going to take my B opportunity if not. He said he prefers having just one lead (the one for topic i, and not doing anything with topic iI), and that his hands were tied (that even his manager wont approve such a change); so I took the lead position in group B.

Not even a year later, Bob is in the same boat hes tired of acting as the lead but not getting paid nor recognized with a title. He got a lead opportunity at a different group (say C), and went to As manager with the same ultimatum. This time, As manager actually conceded and said he will make a new lead position for Bob to apply to.

Fast forward a few weeks, and sure enough, a new lead position is posted for A (specific for ii topic), and Bob applies (I did not apply). Today, I learned that he got the lead position (which was a no brainer).

Bob thanked me and apologized how all this turned out, specifically that if I hadnt started these discussions a few months ago with As manager and if I didnt act on leaving, the lead position in A wouldnt have happened and he wouldnt be where he is now.

While Im happy about Bobs promotion, I actually feel pretty bad about this, as in Im not worth keeping (in the eyes of group A), and they didnt even bother to try but for Bob, theyre giving him everything he wanted. Not sure how I can continue on as if nothing happened, especially because our two groups regularly work together.

Why do people like Beyond the Sea so much? The ending is ridiculous. Theres no way David would do such a thing. It was such a random ending to the whole episode.

I would have preferred either of these two endings:

1. Predictable ending where Cliff is stuck outside in space while David pretends to be Cliff, until the space ship falls apart and David dies / mission fails.
2. David uses his painting skills to fake all the blood and he killed Cliffs dog or something to scare Cliff (this doesnt seem likely because of how upset Cliff looked when he saw the body that the audience doesnt see).

I recall an experience where the tearing was so bad, it basically looked like the resolution took a nosedive.

...on topic, im okay with 30fps if, and ONLY IF, the device in question cant hit 60... like the switch. (and even switch sometimes gets 60fps games)

What pisses me off about 30fps games on the 9th gen consoles (aside from the Series S, i can see that one joining the switch) is the fact they are both more than capable of 60fps.

Hell, my pc, which is actually weaker, can hit 60fps in newer games, at 1080p or 1440p (Atleast one example was with dlss, but i couldnt see the difference between DLSS on and DLSS off anyways).

Personally id rather have 1080/60 over 4k/30. I feel 4k is a bit overkill, but id be satisfied with just having the damn option... The performance settings you do get, seems to hyperfocus on 4k regardless of setting.

Yup! So I have a 3060 Ti on my gaming PC (thats connected to my 4k living room TV), and thats more than enough to run every game at ultra at 1080p (dont care for FPS, so never checked).

I recently gotten into checking for frames on my new ASUS ROG Ally; I run things at 1080p high or ultra, with the AMD up sampling thing on (forgot the name for it), and it runs fine at 30fps locked. Im happy with this setup.

I agree that I can tell the difference, but only if I focus to look for differences. During normal gameplay, I care more about the quality (so putting it on ultra is more important to me).

Thats what I admitted. Ive definitely seen 1080p vs 4k in media consumption and its a meh.

Id legit prefer putting graphics at ultra and playing on 1080p at 30fps (or 720p upscaled to 1080p) vs playing with low settings on 4k at 120fps though my TV is only good for 4k at 60hz native (can do 120hz but its fake I think).

I game on my TV, sitting many feet away, and Im happy with 1080p (hell, Ill be okay with 720p) and 30fps. For tv shows and movies, I can barely tell the difference between 1080p vs 4k, unless I focus and actually look for differences.

Whats all the hub hub about 4k and 120fps for gaming? Is it just because Ive never experienced it?

I get it for smaller sites, and more community-driven site, but for subreddits with like millions of subscribers, where you could have literal hundreds of posts a minute? Why would you ever want to volunteer for that?

I understand why and how you think this, but you're missing out on where they're going to have to (stress) test the preceding and succeeding sections to ensure the collapse didn't affect the internal structural integrity of said sections.

Ideally, yes, it'd be as simple as building a new section in but it's going to take months of testing and approvals

My point is, instead of wasting time to prove to people that the structural integrity of surrounding sections are acceptable via analysis (an impossible feat, with concrete and with those types of people that will nit-pick every single variable), theyll just destroy and rebuild the surrounding sections as well, because itll be faster (but more expensive).

Not even the most conservative analyst is going to argue that the fire will affect up to three sections away.

...try at least, at the very least, one year. Designing a replacement section alone could take 4 months of engineering (at least). Then throw in putting out requests for proposals on the construction, vetting the bids, hiring the contractor to do the work, and then doing the work itself... Yeah, you are looking at probably close to a year at the very least (unless they rush job it, which I wouldn't feel safe with when you already have had an incident).

As an engineer who has done work with the state and federal governments, the engineering design takes quite a while, the red tape of the government approving takes a ton of time, and getting the right contractor on board takes a ton of time. And all of those steps have to go in sequence.

This is a standard highway with predesigned sections. All theyre going to do is destroy the section before and after this, and rebuild it to the exact same existing design. Logistics of doing this work (including demolition of the sections around it), will take longer than the engineering to do this, as there is hardly any new engineering required.

There already is a contractor working on I95, as I95 is being widened right now. There are exemptions in the requirement to go out for bids, and this definitely will fit in that exemptions due to urgent need to replace.

Some can't wait the months it takes for SNAP or the like 6 years it takes to get on section 8 after applying. Or worse they live in a red state that has a million ways to disqualify them.

I helped my neighbors dad apply for SNAP and Medicaid: He got partial SNAP benefits the day after applying as an emergent aid, and got approved in less than a month, with the remainder of his SNAP benefits being deposited just before the next months.

Medicaid took a while to get approved, but it was active from the day of applying, should something have happened and he needed medical aid.

So I called my dad, he didnt pick up. My mom called me back, saying my dad is angry at me for hanging up. My mom apologized about the situation, told me that my dad did indeed drove to the dealer to drop off the car a month ago, but they said they have part shortages and cant guarantee when itll be available. To avoid further damage, theyve just been driving the Kia around.

My dad essentially just lied to me last week when he said the car will be ready by tomorrow apparently they got the call that parts are now available and to drop the Caddy off today.

She apologized again and said she can just return the Kia tonight, Uber back home, and go rent a car tomorrow.

I just begrudgingly told my mom to keep the car until the Caddy is back, and asked her to drive my wife to work and back Thursday/Friday.

*sigh*.

(my parents are retired, so they dont really have anything to do, which is why its shocking to me that they drove so much in such a short time)

I can understand that you're justifiably upset, but maybe they were a little tight on the money to get their car fixed, and they didn't want to burden you with their financial issues.

They have no financial issues. Theyre extremely entitled though.

Bought a brand new 2023 Kia Forte in November 2022. This vehicle replaced our older 2nd car that we had, and we rarely drive it. We purchased it as a vehicle in the rare events the missus has to go into work (vs telework). Since November until April, we drove it less than 1500 miles.

My parents 2013 Caddy is having suspension issues. They brought it to the dealer mid-April, and asked to borrow our Kia. I said sure.

To this day, over a month later, they added over 1000 miles to the car, and they STILL dont have the Caddy fixed. Fortunately, my wife didnt have to go to the office so far but she has to go in on Thursday and Friday.

I told my parents last week that I needed the car back by Wednesday (tomorrow) night. They said the Caddy should be done by today. I called them today, and they said the Caddy wont be ready be next Thursday.

Im pretty pissed off about this. I called the Cadillac dealer to inquire wtf is going on, and they told me they got the car TODAY, and they anticipate the car to be completely fixed next Thursday. I asked for clarity, because to my knowledge, the car should have been at their shop since a month ago. They said no, they got the car today.

Now, Im really extremely pissed off. I called my parents back, and they apologized, and said theyll drive my wife to her work and pick her up Thursday and Friday, and any day next week if she has to go into the office.

I hung up on them.

My wife says Im overreacting and theyre my parents so I should understand Im really pissed off that they will double the mileage on this brand new car, and lied to me that they put the car at the dealer a month ago. Im also pissed off they didnt get a loaner car (its a god damn Cadillac luxury brand; theyre supposed to provide a loaner) and are just using our car as a free rental.

Remember when you can buy pre-built gaming PCs with i7 and 3060Ti for like $900, and then you can flip the OEM 3060Ti for like $1200 on eBay and shit, making the PC essentially free after all eBay fees?

I legit bought eight capable PCs that way to upgrade my entire familys PCs for free; none of them need a dedicated GPU so this worked fantastically.

Remember when you could get paid to refinance and still get like 2.5% 30 year fixed mortgages? That was freaking amazing. I refinanced my already low mortgage from 3.5% down to 2.5%, and got paid like $10k to do it after taking advantage of LenderFi, Better, and AMEX bonuses and rate matching policies.
