yeah, he's still at it. i posted this pic in the topic after asking what company is using this data and within a minute i saw the topic magically disappear. sometimes there's polls, sometimes it's just an open question. the latter probably has more success.

and i'm not sure how much of this is a matter of sense of humor. there's a certain point where it's just too weird.

insurance also is updated yearly, usually in July or January, which is why i said that in the future tense. it's a known trend since last month now since people are finding out that they ain't getting renewals and brokers are getting word about coverage changes due to rioting.

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2020/12/insurers-balk-at-covering-portland-businesses-brokers-say-downtown-upheaval-has-made-carriers-wary.html
(same article, no incognito needed - https://archive.is/EH9R6 )

they ain't getting covered. if they do it's at massively increased premiums and won't include certain damages, like, say... those from rioting.

hm.
a state rep for PA just died of a brain aneurysm (Mike Reese).
had covid last month.

could be a coincidence but there's known neurological damage that can occur, including to the brain that aren't affected due to lack of oxygen. was just a few days ago a study showing blood vessels and inflammation in the brain may be a direct result of it, with damage seen that'd normally be associated with strokes, for example. all ties back with the faintings in China we saw last year too, as well as the notable aging in severe cases.

and caught up to boonies, 1-4 complete. vol 5, one day.

that's my general pace when i'm at it. 400 pages a day no problem, done a Tanya volume in a day, which is basically two normal LNs (done that too - MobuSeka's half arcs are addicting and i went through 2 and a half). might start something new today or go play some video games. whichever holds my interest longer gets me for the next 2 hours. i do wonder if it's possible to outpace the calendar now (3 LNs done, roughly 200~ pages average, it's 2 days into the year) but i know i can't keep that up for long. could probably have a month where i go through one a day though, would be the fastest way to catch up or start a new series.

i haven't followed the dore/AOC fight but whenever someone "is doing something to get things done," that doesn't sound good. usually, that means someone is throwing their core beliefs in the trash can for some dumb compromise.

that's... pretty much what's been going on with the AOC spat there, yes.
he made the pitch, people liked it, AOC responded.
her response was trash. like, factually incorrect on multiple fronts. so other things got said with more reasons to not do it and from there it's a mixed bag of results. ultimately it's a split within the progressives with two groupings: a) the ones who want to try to be politically savvy and make their own progressive establishment, and b) the ones who say fuck that, blow it up and piss 'em off, be a bitch with a big stick.

this has been noted with some weird shit like trying to usurp force the vote to meaning other votes. that's group a. b meanwhile just gets madder at them because they honestly do come off as 200 IQ big brain types.

definitely more adjacent proximity. like he's fine with socialism as a concept and has had some bizarre takes like defending Venezuela and saying it's not that bad. he's prone to being dumb. of course, that's also why people like watching him: he's not the smart guy, he's you, just a man figuring things out with a bit of crazy splashed in. sometimes, a lot of crazy but hey, it works.

Dore's a comedian first and foremost.
he dovetailed that into politics along the way but as a result he ends up with a very everyday man kinda show that's a little crazy. dude's a cross of a progressive and a liberal and has been on Rogan plenty of times.

if you're seeing him in the news lately it's largely going to be because Force The Vote was his idea. argument goes...

1) Pelosi is up for re-election.
2) the house majority is tiny right now. specifically, it's a 4 seat house majority that may still go down as there's two races still being determined.
3) there are about a dozen progressives that'll be voting. these would be the people who are firmly in that progressive, M4A, etc wing of the party.

so use that as leverage.
if pelosi wants to be speaker, she has to get their vote. so the request made is that they'll vote for her if she, bare minimum, puts M4A on the floor of the house to be voted on. that's it. she doesn't do it, they don't vote for her.

there's been a lot of pushback on that, including by said progressive wing of the party. personally i just see all the pushback as bullshit from politicians as the only reason to not want that voted on is because you don't want the result on your record. for a while people were saying "BUT YOU'LL GIVE IT TO THE REPUBLICANS" but that ain't how it works either; they'd need a majority too and they don't got that. just a simple case of "the democrat who'll put that on the floor wins."

probably the only time progressives have had leverage and they're blowing it, so either they're a) really bad at this, or b) purposefully not doing it, which is them kneecaping themselves and solely protects the other democrats.

Dore's firmly under the impression it's mostly B because he knows if he's a dumbass and has figured that much out, they, who are smarter than him, already know it.

unrelated to whatever topic, some canadian fun.

Ontario Financial Minister is named Rod Phillips and released this vid on twitter Christmas Eve.
https://twitter.com/RodPhillips01/status/1342131118993190914

thing is... he wasn't actually there. that's a scheduled tweet.
he was on vacation in the Caribbean.

people naturally got pissed and the drama is still continuing. though Phillips resigned yesterday, there's still some outrage from his boss Doug Ford since he's been caught multiple times violating the rules, other members have been caught, and is believed to have known about this and was just helping cover it up too. some evidence exists that he knew but not sure anything's quite definitive.

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/rod-phillips-resigns-as-ontario-finance-minister-following-secret-pandemic-getaway-1.5249471

currently though it stands as one of the best international examples of leaders not just blatantly not giving a fuck but also doing it on Christmas to really drive the point home. man is still making six figures after resigning too so it's not like he's losing that much.

the funny thing about this is you can legit agree with that and immediately followup with the movie used slave labor from the people they're genociding.

you end up with the same issue, only it's not the actress that's the concern, it's the entire movie.

also guiga/deepspraw is a china apologist who says they aren't committing genocide or slave labor or anything else like that, so don't even bother on that one.

Ok so we can still start with making it illegal to turn them off IF your department has them

Of course the flaw here is that its already illegal to do the sorts of stuff the worst cops do and they dont care

the other flaw is bathroom breaks or privacy concerns for people who aren't the cop. if the camera were to be always on somehow, ignoring battery and storage limitations for a sec, then it'd mean that every single cop has video and audio of every area they've been to with all the people in it recorded. sensitive data could potentially be recorded, including that of lawyers or other law enforcement.

basically you've gotta establish a rule for when they should be on, then you can get into issues of them being off. some of these can be done with tech advancements, something like the camera auto-on when weapons or handcuffs are taken off the belt.

they tracked the virus in the UK back to September and have been marking steady increases. 29% in mid-November, 62% early December. so the assumption here is that it's just much more contagious based off of the increases. i'm sure there was definitely some super spreader stuff happening too and that explains why they went from 70% to 56% more contagious but that's where we're at right now. a perfectly firm statement of how much more, nobody actually knows, it just appears to be the case.

with that said.
it does not appear to be more severe at all. there ARE strains which are both - Africa had an outbreak - but that's rarer and hasn't had anything notable in western nations. that's also why it's accepted as fact, there's a couple dozen changes the virus has had with some subtle differences. nothing that any of the vaccines can't figure out though.

that one actually does follow for defunding. if it's a third party then it's not the police force. the general idea basically is that internal investigations should be done by not-police, meaning that the current internal ones wouldn't be expenses a police force needs - the money is going to a different division. now... yes if you want to get into the politics of that it gets murkier (the two will eventually become close knit) but it's still a different division and separated. on this particular aspect, it works.

and yes, there are cases where funding cuts directly affected cameras, that's the Blake situation. ideally some of that funding could be better distributed so that accountability measures and training aren't cut, yet those two are first to go. there's plenty of objections to be had when it comes to the latter - more training costs more money - but on this particular thread, it tracks. internal investigations are always bullshit, regardless of where it's from.

when the year started i intended to read at least one LN a week.
didn't make a list to keep up with it but since it's the 31st, figured i'd make a list. i know i'm missing a couple LNs but...

Light Novels:

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 1-3
Chivalry of a Failed Knight 1-4
Combatants Will Be Dispatched 1-2
Eighty-Six 1-4
Her Majesty's Swarm 1-3
I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated 1
Mapping - The Trash-Tier Skill That Got Me Into a Top-Tier Party 1-2
May These Leaden Battlegrounds Leave No Trace 1
My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered 1-2
My Stepsister is My Ex-Girlfriend 1-2
Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon 1-3
The Dirty Way to Destroy the Goddess's Heroes 1-5
The Eminence in Shadow 1-2
The Invincible Shovel 1-3
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent 1
The Sorcerer King of Destruction and the Golem of the Barbarian Queen 1-2
The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat 1
The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs (MobuSeka) 1-5
Wild Times with a Fake Fake Princess 1
Why Shouldn't a Detestable Demon Lord Fall in Love 1

Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou 1-3 (dropped)
Redefining the META at VRMMO Academy (dropped)
The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind! 1-3 (dropped)
Ultimate Antihero 1 (dropped)

Magic User - Reborn in Another World as a Max Level Wizard 2-3
No Game No Life 10
Reincarnated Slime 8-9
The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody 2-4

some of these i saw the anime first (e.g., Chivalry of Failed Knight) but liked it enough to give the LN a chance and in most cases they run ahead of the anime at this point anyway. there's also some that are way better than i expected - stepsister one is actually just a comfy rom-com with an extra element to make it awkward - and some that... well, i dropped because they just were bad or were clearly going in a direction way beyond the author's ability (looking at you Arifureta). Vending Machine is also basically dead, so if you start it do know it'll be a great 3 volumes but you ain't getting anything ever again. kinda like NGNL, only that's 10 volumes and you can understand that one - he wrote himself into a hole. of the new series read, i'd say...

Her Majesty's Swarm
Goddess's Heroes
The Eminence in Shadow
Magic User
MobuSeka

are probably my favorite 5. and of that, Goddess's Heroes is fantastic because it's only 6 volumes long period, it's actually complete in Japan! Swarm is basically Starcraft: The Isekai; third is Chuuni with max intution and luck; MobuSeka's just good fun and plays with the setting to a satisfying level; Magic User... is just honestly great all around and the only one i'd say is remotely competitive with Reincarnatd Slime as the one that drew me in the most, it's a D&D Wizard in a fantasy world where magic is a typical elemental system. 86 is great too but it kinda lost me with Vol 3. oh yeah, Bottom-Tier Tomozaki is a fucking guide to on how to improve oneself socially. it's bizarre to read considering the audience but enjoyable.

Web novels:

Redo of Healer 1-6
I'm In Love With The Villainous (chapter... 70?)
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha (arcs 1-3, bit of 4)
The Villainess Will Crush Her Destruction End Through Modern Firepower (chapter 37, which is current)

Modern Firepower/Astrid is great.
Redo of Healer is revenge porn. and i mean that in every possible way.
probably dropping Villaianous because the LNs are coming out now.
Maou's translation hurts. but it's also not very good, was hopeful for a minute but alas.

already know a number of books are gonna be read soon and there's a ton that i need to catch up on - Goblin Slayer, Tanya, Re:Zero, Konosuba, and Mahouka are all a couple volumes behind that i'll get to. hell i'm behind on some of the ones i started this year (e.g., 86) and others are on a list (Bunny Girl, Deathbound Duke's Daughter, Bookworm).

i'm sure i'm missing a couple books here and there too but that's safely over the target, LNs alone averaged well over the yearly goal. if i can catch up to some series and get to work on some more... might get close to doubling it next year.

issue isn't what most mass media or twitter say. they're irrelevant.
issue is what gets said in georgia among republicans and among right wing places. already seeing some spin happening saying mitch is wanting the other two things - section 230 stuff and investigation - to go with it.

now if the two georgia senators end up saying they agree to needing all that, it'll be a race of just how much those two aspects matter. especially when the opponents are saying they'll do it flat.

red has a lot of faith in the general principle of "throw money at it until it works."

SEP doesn't believe it's gonna work on distribution because... well, it hasn't and there's little reason to believe a biden administration will change that much. red's presumption ultimately ends up being that this belief is significantly wrong and that you'll see major changes occur that magically fixes this to be a little behind instead of a lot behind (e.g., things are more streamlined because money thrown that way).

me, i've already gone on record in here in saying that supply side will be fucked and distribution lines will be fucked. i'll fully expect to see distribution mostly catch up to supply in a few (let's go with... 4-6?) months - with notable pitfalls and failures - but both will be cases where the facts documented in November and December were put to the side in favor of claims made by companies and officials instead, aka, words over reality. basically, the sooner it's accepted that the timetable is off by at least half, the better. for what that means: instead of first responders and elderly done in March, it's June; instead of vaccines being available in June for masses, it's December.

No series in gaming has done more for fantasy crossovers. It's legitimately the MCU of video games.

Marvel vs. Capcom came out in 1998.
original Smash came out 1999.

the MCU of fantasy crossovers is still Marvel. i mean you can still go back further for the previous entries - 96 for X-men vs Street Fighter - but MvC is probably where that one really took off. hell, the idea of random third parties being in a mainstream was a thing in Soul Calibur 2. Brawl certainly made the most hype of it but it's not revolutionary or unique.

so two vaccine stories happening.

first, on AstraZeneca:
they claim that they've figured out a way to make it 100% effective against severe reactions to covid that require hospitalization. still haven't provided the data but it was just announced yesterday and we'll see how that goes. this is important since it's also much easier to make and transport, making it both cheaper and better to produce on a massive scale. doesn't mean you can't get it, does mean that it'd prevent the worst effects. at least, that's based on the specific phrasing used and we should see more on this by thursday since it may be rolled out then in the UK.

second, on the current vaccines:
people starting to understand the pfizer/moderna vaccines more and noticing the specific language. chief scientist of WHO pointed out that there's no evidence yet on the vaccines regarding their ability to prevent infections/transmission. technically this has been known from the start - that efficiency was based on that specific language of symptomatic infection, not sure how the specifics break down further (e.g., is the 94% reduction a reduction in severity or in all people) but the gist of it remains the same: we know it helps the host but we don't know what that says to how contagious the host still is or how much it can spread. so you're infected but for how long and how contagious? is it the same result as being asymptomatic or is it different since you may technically have a higher viral load?

pfizer did say earlier in the month they're researching more stuff and will release early 2021. but it's a good thing to note to those who get the vaccine that more data's needed on what they're doing as the last thing any of 'em need is someone who has the vaccine to turn into a super spreader too.

i just don't bother keeping track of any numbers from those 3 nations past the first 3 months since by then data's gonna be too messed up and most leaks will have been plugged outside of higher level intelligence. official numbers won't be particularly useful even then but you'll have some clearer markers and trends on it to work with. india's... not the same as china or russia, it does legitimately seem like incompetence and lack of ability are much bigger factors, but it's prone to miss just as much.

Remember when it looked like India might pass USA in cases. = /

they did a long time ago. india's numbers aren't accurate either, they either don't want to or don't have the ability to count those in the lower two castes in particular. happens with every disease outbreak that happens over there, you'll get a more accurate count in a couple years. happened to malaria in 2013 when it was undercounted by a factor of 20-30x, happened to tuberculosis in 2015 where only half were counted, and according to India's own government statistics, 20% of deaths aren't reported at all. note, that's a normal stat for them, not a pandemic one that'll primarily involve people with no toilets, poor hygiene, no electricity, etc. eventually when more info is known there you'll see numbers that utterly dwarf ours. which is also a more accurate take of china's numbers too, though we won't know those for a fact because they won't either.

russia's also known to lie on numbers.
