Then just now this update got posted on the Artifact steam page

The Artifact public beta is starting later today. All attendees from this year's International and everyone who redeemed a beta key will find the game activated in their Steam account.

Since lifting the NDA on the private beta yesterday, there's been an overwhelming amount of feedback on all parts of the game. Much of that feedback has been a clear signal that we underestimated how much interest and excitement the community has around certain features that weren't available in the initial beta build.

We want to take a few minutes to talk about some of those missing features now:
There was no way to do a draft event with friends. We didn't prioritize this play mode, and had planned to enable it sometime after release. We've heard your feedback: drafting with friends is a core part of what you want to spend your time doing in Artifact. In the next Artifact beta build, you can select Call To Arms Phantom Draft in any user-created tournament.

There was no way to practice the draft modes without spending an event ticket. Drafting is incredibly fun, but can also be very intimidating. We agree that it's important to have a way to practice before venturing into a more competitive mode. In the next Artifact beta build, everyone who has claimed their starting content will find a Casual Phantom Draft gauntlet available in the Casual Play section.

There was nothing to do with duplicate starter heroes. We're adding a system that allows extra, unwanted cards to be recycled into event tickets. This feature will ship before the end of the beta period.
The first two changes will be live for everyone when the public beta activates later today. We'll ship the recycling system, as well as other improvements to the beta, over the next week and a half.

Please enjoy the beta, and keep sending us your feedback.

Personally, I think Artifact looks awesome. I love everything about the way gameplay looks.

I also don't think there's anything wrong with the purchase price for the game or the way purchasing packs goes. I'm pretty okay with spending a bit of money to get my collection going, and filling it out with the market for a bit extra is fine. My big problem with Hearthstone is that I would spend $50-150 on a set and get a decent collection but then not really have a good way to get the cards I don't have without tons of grinding.... which I should not feel like I need to do when I spend a bunch of money every few months. So I think the collection market in Artifact is what I want in a card game.

But a big problem came up with the NDA came out that you have to use an event ticket ($1) to play Draft mode (kinda like Arena in Hearthstone), and $1 to play ranked constructed. We thought you would be able to play draft in tournament mode but this wasn't available in the beta. So it seems like you pay to buy the game, you pay to buy packs and cards, and you ALSO have to pay to play certain game modes. I think requiring you to pay to play game modes that will reward packs is fine, but to lock out game modes completely is pretty ridiculous. I shouldn't have to feel like I need to pay a regular entry fee just to play the game.

Also, you get a couple starter decks and those heroes were showing up in packs that people opened, which is pretty useless since you don't use them and you can't sell them... since everyone else already has them. This means if you get them in a pack you basically aren't getting a card.

So I was pretty disappointed. Basically, I'm willing to spend some money to get into the game and to buy cards, I don't really feel like I need a free to play mechanic. But I DONT want to have to pay entry fees on top of that.

So a couple hours ago I requested a refund on my repurchase and this is the feedback I gave.

Two reasons:

1. Event tickets look way too pervasive. Ranked constructed and all draft modes? I can understand you want to lock prizes behind a paywall entry, but it feels way too much like you are requiring extra payment to play the game on a regular basis. I'm willing to pay the $20 to buy the game and pay more to obtain my collection.... but I'm not going to keep paying just to actually play game modes. This has been taken too far.

2. Starter deck heroes and cards can be found in the Call to Arms packs. Everybody gets these cards for free. You can't use them in your decks and there's noone to sell them to since everyone else has them. There's no reason to open these, except perhaps custom game modes with no limits. But that's such a niche reason that doesn't justify obtaining extra copies... These cards should just be considered Basic with unlimited use, not part of the Call to Arms set.

I've been looking forward to this game since TI7 and think it looks like a blast. I'm willing to spend a reasonable amount to obtain cards, but I shouldn't feel so limited on what to do with them.

I prepurchased because I thought it was a given that I was going to buy this game and enjoy the hell out of it, but after seeing how it's working out with the NDA lifted, I just don't know that I can justify this game. Please refund my purchase.

Fix these issues by release and I'll be back, but if you don't, then I guess I won't be.

Very stupid move Dan. He got played by Angelina like a fiddle. The Davids got them good.

I don't think it's a bad move. Obviously the *best* move would have been for him to read what was happening correctly and predict John would get voted and give him the idol but that's a little unrealistic.

What WAS known was that Angelina would probably get votes, and by giving her the idol he's proven himself to his alliance and to her.

Angelina wasn't actually going home, so you might say that it was a waste, but I disagree; that's actually why it was a good move. If she begged him for the idol after he promised he'd save her, and he DIDN'T do it, and then John goes home in a 3-2 split, their relationship would be pretty permanently destroyed. Instead she should definitely come out of this feeling like she owes him big time.

Though I don't think Dan really thought this move out that much. I think he was more or less guilted into doing it.

I was talking to my brother about this and I was saying how it doesn't make sense, since Cassian already begins Rogue One as a heartless bastard and begins melting his icy heart as the movie goes on, so there won't be any character development for him to have since he'll need to stay a static asshole for the whole series to be the same when Rogue One starts.

My brother suggested that maybe he'll have the reverse arc- he'll be an optimistic rebel with a heart of gold to begin with and slowly become more ruthless as repeated losses against the empire break him down as a person and turn him into the guy who kills his friend at the start of Rogue One.

I guess that could be interesting.

Fun fact about McCree: his voice actor Matt Mercer was one of the judges for the talent contest, and he was delightful.

The other guests were Panser (TradeChat youtuber) and another woman in an Amazon cosplay I didn't recognize. After every cosplay or video or performance they'd basically be like "that was soooo good! like ... it was amazing! I loved it!""

Then Matt's turn to comment would come and he'd offer personalized insight like "as a Renaissance Fair guy myself, your song really captured the fun and camaraderie of hanging out with your friends at the inn" or "the editing in this video was really Scott Pilgrimesque, well done pulling off such a unique style" or "as someone who has cosplayed as Arthas, the detail on that armour is incredible. it's so difficult to make each piece so memorable." He'd also throw in some jokes and personal stories and just totally killed it.

Honestly it was comical how hard he was carrying that panel.

He also used the McCree voice really sparingly which I appreciated. Darin De Paul, the voice of Reinhardt, was the host of the contest and he throws that voice out non fucking stop. He was entertaining in his own way but man he takes things too far.

But Matt Mercer is the bomb.

I thought that was really fun insight into the design process.. Hearing the entire design process for her started as just a byproduct of making a McCree cinematic... and everyone involved just liked her more and more and added on to her more and more until somehow she became the next hero.

For the record, this is one of Bob's earliest character designs and his final design

https://imgur.com/a/FOegUp9

He barely changed at ALL

even in that original drawing his elements are really coming through

Ashe went through some iteration but Bob was an immediate home run.

Original versions of Ashe
https://imgur.com/zLLGwe4

This isn't really true. It's more accurate to say these are early versions of Ashe. Not original versions.

I went to the LoreCraft panel at Blizzcon and they talked about a lot of different ways they come up with the stories and characters in the different games. One of the things they talked about was the creation of the McCree cinematic.

One of the earliest things they did was go to a concept artist and asked him to do some story boarding art to plan out what the cinematic would even be about. They just wanted a McCree cinematic.

So the first thing this guy did was come up with an expression for McCree's attitude. He had several thoughts and attempts and eventually came up with this.

https://imgur.com/TilJuUEg

This really sold McCrees even measured yet laid back demeanor really well. All of his art afterwards reflected this attitude. It's why McCree is just so cool in this cinematic. I could post pictures of the other concept art but eh. It's stuff like slicing the pie or grabbing his hat or shooting someone with his revolver. It's all done with that same even keel attitude

Next after developing this tone, he needed McCree's opponents. They didn't exist yet. They didn't mention this, but I think the only mandate for this was for Echo to show up at the end. Everything else was up to them. So one of the guys asking the artist for this said "lets try a big omnic and maybe a woman as a foil to McCree???" and the guy came up with this:

https://imgur.com/eCS0z5u

This is the very first original drawing of the Deadlock gang, including Ashe and Bob.

The guy asking for the art was like "ok, first of all, the robot with the hat is obviously great. The skull guy is cool but a little generic. But give me more about this woman."

So artist came up with more art

https://imgur.com/a/lfXD9al

They loved this stuff. She looks awesome. But there's a couple problems. First is that she's a little too vampire huntery. Very Van Helsing. Not quite as much into the western feel as she should be. But also a big problem is that she actually looks very similar to Reaper in overall style and in silhouette. If you saw one of them running by in a scene it would be a bit tough to tell which it is. I see that a lot here.

So the artist tried again, with the image Anagram linked.

https://imgur.com/zLLGwe4

Top left was *too* Westerny. She looks like a female version of McCree, which isn't quite what they wanted. Bottom left was too punk. Top middle is awesome but too white. They said they were gonna put that in their back pocket to use some day in the future.

I don't remember what they said about the right two. They are kinda close to how she ended up though. Maybe they said it was too close to Reaper again or something.

They iterated a little more and got to her final design and started animating the short and she was really coming to life. The art team was really loving her. So when it came to VA time they wanted someone really strong. There was a bit of elaboration of the process but I'll skip it - ultimately they ended up with Jennifer Hale who is a top tier voice actress (one of my favourites, tbh). They got her in teh room with Matt Mercer and it was awesome.

Then at some point in this process, the gameplay team saw what was going on with Ashe and were like "who the fuck is that????" and just started creating their own content for her... .and then she ended up being the next hero.

Everything else about the movie was really bad. Finn and Rose's Bogus Journey, everything related to Poe, Phasma, Benicio Del Toro, the entire notion that the rebellion is close to being wiped already and that this movie is "The spark that will ignite the rebellion". it's all just really dumb and poorly written.

So according to Angelina (via Stephen), she was in on the Natalie plan and was just faking sympathy to try and get Natalies jacket. Between this and the getting Jeremy voted out to protect her marriage rumor, Angelina is amazing.

Wait, what's this rumor?
I also remember this episode Jeff asking if everyone was ready before the challenge and Angelina being the only one to say "yes!" after an awkward pause. One of the editors tweeted no one had ever actually done that before, so he included it in the episode. Angelina's something else.

Rumour discussion - may show up later so marking it as a spoiler.

Jeremy is claiming that Angelina and John were in a showmance and he was talking about it openly and in confessionals so Angelina engineered his demise to silence him and keep her husband from finding out about it.

Rob C's take was that she probably is cuddling with John at night and things like that, and Jeremy might be taking that to mean they are showmancing. But stuff like that is normal - some people huddle together to keep warm and maintain strong bonds all the time at night out there. Jeremy might just be seeing survival behaviour and calling it a showmance.

I've gotten a pretty bad impression of Jeremy from interviews as a bit of an egocentric jerk so I don't put much stock into his interpretation of what he saw, or that he's not just being petty.

Natalia refused to comment about it in her interview as it's not her place to talk about other people though, so that kinda makes it a bit more confusing. If there was absolutely nothing going on I kinda think she woulda just been like "Lol no Jeremy is just being a baby. we all cuddle for warmth" or something.

I don't really get where foolmo is coming from. Do you have a problem with any dress code whatsoever? Is any code of conduct in an office a complete overreach of management? Should there be no policies that give guidelines on how to behave at work?

Doesn't really make sense. Businesses want to operate smoothly and efficiently without conflict. A harmonious company culture contributes pretty strongly to this. It's normal to hire people you think will fit in with your culture and to avoid people who might cause friction. How someone presents themselves in attitude and in their attire is one of the most basic indicators of how they will fit in. Maybe it's part of your culture to promote friction as you think this makes the culture better too with different perspectives or something, but that's just another strategy for promoting your culture.

I've personally passed on hiring people who were on paper "good" candidates, but I didn't feel like they'd fit in with the rest of my team. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Calculated risk!

That she lost. Voting for Lyrsa makes Lyrsa a lot more unlikely to work with her later. I thought this even before the preview, but it also makes Mike less willing to trust she'll vote with him too.

It's pretty apparent when you watch gameplay

Like how is this guy hitting any of this. I remember it feeling good back in the day but I could see why ti would feel weird now. I played this and a ton of Wolfenstein 3D which was pretty much the same thing. You are literally missing an entire dimension.

Have you guys ever seen Gate?

It's an anime where a mystical gate opens in middle of Japan and orcs armed with swords and stuff invade. The army kills them all with their guns and then sends an armed expedition back through the gate into a magical fantasy world with warriors, wizards, dragons, and catgirls.

They shoot everything with their guns.

HL1 is just a really well designed experience. Very memorable story and set design with interesting gameplay challenges. A lot of it is pretty standard generic stuff today... but it was very innovative at the time. I'll always remember my time in Black Mesa with my trusty crowbar.

Then on TOP of being an awesome game, it spawned many other classic games that were designed off of it's engine. Some by Valve, many by fans. Counter Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, I spent many many hours playing these games. But the fan made ones were just as awesome. Natural Selection, The Ship, The Specialists, Vampire Slayers. man those were some good times

So Half Life is a top tier story mode single player shooter just by itself, and it directly spawned numerous other classics. Seems like it's popularity is a no brainer. Seems to me the only reason you wouldn't "get it" is if you just weren't there to play it at the time.
