I say keep covid coming and keep the lock downs and new/better way of doing things in effect forever.

It's a shame we actually need covid to live our lives better and that so many want to fight so hard to wreck the good thing we have going. I guess working remotely and having direct to streaming movie releases isn't good enough for some people?

Honestly, covid should never even needed to exist to get these very obvious improvements in place for people... But since apparently there's still so many who miss the old normal so I guess it's a good thing many of us didn't get vaccinated and got things back back on the right track (though who did/didn't get vaccinated probably doesn't mean that much... It's probably more about what the media says though)

Hey though... If we could stop fighting for the old normal to come back maybe there'd be more enthusiasm from some of us to make this silliness go away. As it stands now, definitely want the crazy media shenanigans to keep going because they've been a major boon to me.

They are as good as the books.

It will take another decade or so for most to agree on this but it will happen.

For the Hobbit though, this will never happen, most of those movies were garbage.

For that matter, the first few Harry Potter movies are better than their respective books, though for the last few this swaps and the books are better.

Game of Thrones/Ice and Fire book 4 and 5 are WORSE than the show...and objectively even beyond that the show is better (even if it's hot trash) because it at least exists and will ever exist.

There's literally no reason to take wfh away from people who've been productive with it... But in general most companies are going to do it anyway.

Can't have that group continuing to be more productive than the ones who choose to go back to the office... The last year was probably already embarrassing enough for people who thought the office was necessary... So it's got to be stopped by the logic of most managers.

Or is that just sort of the popular thing to say?

Work from home

Direct to streaming movies/death of the theater

Basically a giant boon to your life and for once being anti social was okay instead of like all the other years where it was frowned upon.

And yet everyone says it's a forgone conclusion we are all supposed to hate that year and fight hard to get the old normal back? I don't get it... The old normal sucked.

As far as I can tell... 2020 was a better year than anything that came before or likely will ever come after.

2021 is actually looking to be the worst year... As it's the year the majority of companies finally got their excuse to drag everyone back through daily traffic and lower their quality of life significantly. Basically, it's the year all the good things went away.

I think CATFA is fine to watch first, because it's almost totally self-contained; the only real connection you have to the other MCU films at the time (by that point, Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor 1, & The Incredible Hulk, which is easily the one that can be dropped the most without affecting anything) is Fury showing up at the end.

I mean, yeah it's minor...but Furys significance won't make much sense. Also based on CA we kind of know Howard Stark was a pretty good guy already now so Tony coming to that realization in Iron Man 2 won't carry so much weight. Also, we already know Tonys not the only one with decent tech in the world right away and there's a super powerful Tesseract out there that kind of makes the amazing core/new element he creates sort of not as impressive (still impressive for sure, but since Tesseracts already exist it's not quite as amazing)

It's not "knowing Vader is Lukes father already" kind of anticlimactic like if one watches the Star Wars series chronologically...but still just not what was intended. I would say though...if they watch Captain Marvel and its end credits stuff early on in the movie series...THAT will be pretty bad.

Starting with the movie that was released fifth... Okay.

I mean... I get why some think it's a novel, neat idea to do this but no matter what they try to tell you about chronological order and all that... The release order was what they intended. It worked ideally when they were in theaters first coming out. No reason suddenly a different order is now better... And sometimes doing this can lead to important things getting spoiled for you.

Audible clicks are still better than the way we do buttons nowadays. True for remotes and especially true for keyboards.

Not sure when the idea started that we don't want to hear the button being pushed down but it was a bad idea...and it should have stayed in Star Trek.

Kids being quiet vs those who cant...there's not really any "most of the time" to this is there? There's just the normal distribution of kid types theres always been.

Maybe the negative stories you hear about at home work...yeah for sure those would feature complaints about kids not staying quiet. But those are the stories that get told...nobody is going to get much attention talking about their regular 5-10 year old (who the law says needs supervision) who knows how to stay quiet while you work...it's not a very interesting story. Was common enough though I'd imagine for many people and freeing up that day care cost was a godsend.

And I'm pretty sure actually that yeah...the average company isn't going to let some stay home and others go into the office long term. I definitely have no proof that this won't happen... but anecdotal evidence from a few here thier companies are allowing it isn't proof it will happen either. "Most likely" is all I or anyone can say here. And knowing just how companies are... and how they won't really having enjoy separate rules etc for different employees this just doesn't seem likely.

I mean...it COULD happen if enough people push for it...or the ceo/leaders think it will work...or any other number of factors come into play. And I could eat these words definitely...but I just don't see this being what actually occurs in general.

So anyway...

Whats going on here is that we are all probably mostly in agreement? Let the ones who want to go, go...and let the ones who want to stay, stay.

Sure I dont understand the allure of going back to the office. And people talking about making friends, meeting girls or needing the social interaction...to me those all sound like negatives and reason I DONT want to go back... being around others who were there for that stuff.. My wording could be more understanding I guess...but ultimately I don't care if they go back and wanted to go back. I may not ever agree that thier reasons for wanting that are really great...but thats fine. I mean, they probably don't care much about my commute or childcare issues if they live close to the job or don't have kids...so we can all dismiss eachothers points we feel are valid... doesn't matter in the end I guess because it doesn't have any bearing on what event actually happens?

My original point of the thread was that the ones who don't want to go back should never be made to if they can do everything as or more effectively than they did from the office (which a lot of people are doing just fine)

That was actually kind of funny in a way. Like, I always saw / see more introverted people getting shit on for being that way.

But, good god, I still cant believe how absolutely unable to handle having to stay in the more extroverted people were.

The pandemic could have been a good lesson in learning how to entertain yourself when going out isnt an option... but Im sure rather than trying to learn or make the best of it, its easier or more fun to just act like its the end of the world.

Weird flex, but I guess Im lucky in that Im happy with both staying in or going out \_()_/

It'd be more funny if there weren't a bunch of CEOs and management who they get in the ear of with this "let's return to the office" nonsense.

Like, if there was actually a scenario that played out in such a way that these people could go back to an office if they want to so bad but anyone who doesn't want to can stay home and work...that'd be great.

But corporation rarely make rules like that...mostly likely because some are wanting to go back they make us ALL go back. I mean...if it's what the company/CEO/shareholders want to do it's going to happen. Us being more productive at home or not won't matter.... they'll do it and find some rando stat to justify doing it, because there's enough of these other types who want it so bad for no good reason...and since they'll have the backing of all these types of employees the general corporate culture will probably be that it's a negative thing if you even bring up how things worked just fine for you at home.

That's a possibility, though looking around and reading about it more...it seems the support for just staying at home and working remotely is definitely out there as well. I guess even the corporate culture swaying towards everyone coming back can't really solve the issue of "what if all of these people who liked at home work and did good with it just go somewhere else that offers remote work when we stop doing it?". Chances are they are all the best, most efficient workers anyway (after all...they want to work, not go and form social cliqs after an hour commute) so that loss is hopefully too devastating for a company to bear and they see sense?

Even if not...I have noticed a huge increase of fully remote postings (at least, for GIS developers/analysts and probably other tech jobs). If some companies just won't accept a remote working environment I have to believe enough others will. I've already started applying for these early just to be ready in case they do try to send us all back...maybe the best scenario is just that some companies accept that remote working is the new way to go...and others stay behind and keep doing things the old way? I guess then an employee could still decide for themselves, by working for a remote company or one where everyone goes to the office.

Videos taking over as the main source of guides for games in the last decade or so is definitely one of those bad trends in gaming...and I say that as someone who generally prefers stuff thats seen as progress...I mean I like digital game downloads, don't mind some DLC etc... I don't consider myself resistant to new trends at all. But videos just aren't the ideal method to get what one wants in terms of game help.

I would do it then as long as they can prove its all legit within that 5 minutes. Don't care enough to say no at that point I guess.

But all this other stuff? Waiting due to supply and demand? Going out to the hospital? Standing in a line and paying and just generally participating in all this madness that I never cared about from the beginning?

Nah...Im not required to care enough for that.

Besides...the longer most if the population doesn't get vaccinated the longer they don't try and do dumb pointless things like reopening offices and theaters right? So we get these awesome work at home setting and direct video on demand thats SUPERIOR to the old way of doing things...

So the original point still stands.

There's no reason for it to ever be mandated to return. Some people liked the office...some people were close enough to it to not be annoyed by the commute...some didn't have to worry about day care...some actually ENJOYED those god awful fantasy football leagues/ small talkers/ constant "collaborators" who just made meeting after meeting because they hated just simply working for real and going home.

But even acknowledging the presence of these sadistic psychopaths and thier own weird enjoyments...doesn't mean they should be the reason for EVERYONE to come back. They've hurt everyone else long enough... this is a good chance for it to end

As long as a mandated return doesn't happen...guess all will be cool. But I get the feeling they will eventually hurt everyone because that's how the corporate world works. Guess time will tell.

The thought of being able to work from home is extremely appealing to me.

But, in fairness, Ive never had an office job and have only ever worked retail. So, being underpaid to wake up at 5:00 am everything day to travel 40 minutes to work six days a week to do manual labor and deal with some of the dumbest idiots on the planet is something Im very tired of.

The thought of not having to put so much wear on my car and the fortune Id save on gas alone makes that sound like a dream come true lol.

It is...and add to that if you have kids...ones that are old enough to know to stay quiet while you work but would have to otherwise be in an expensive day care if you were at the office...now you don't have to pay for day care.

Also also...you can work any job anywhere now so your not limiting application to stuff in your area...also also also not dressing up in khakis etc....my god it's just so much better in every way that actually matters.

But some people want to chit chat in person at work I guess because they don't have literally anywhere else to do it so let's ALL go back to that hell right?

Extroverts are more than welcome to go back to the office if they really need it, but for my sake, I've spent enough of my life trying to be more like one of them.

It was hilarious to see them all lose their fucking minds as the world told them they needed to be more like me for a little bit though. The moment the roles were reversed they all turned into gigantic crybabies.

This...they had no problem preaching to us about how important all this collaboration was and why at home work would never work for so long...when it turned out to be fine (which I knew it would be even before) it was so hilarious.

To lose their dumb fantasy football leagues, constant impromptu meetings that never did anything but help them prove they were busy, office politics, forced social gatherings and dressing up must have really rocked their worlds. Heck, even in this thread some guy mentioned "whiteboarding"...I'm pretty happy now I don't have to hear corporate jargon like that on the regular now and can instead just work and complete tasks without all the fluff of a regular corporate setting.

It was interesting to see though, despite how much they insisted all that stuff was really important for the job, when it was proven to really be unnecessary they pushed for offices reopening anyway.

So it was never about things needed for the job...they just wanted others to like working the way they worked.

What I think... or at least hope they best part of all this is though...is the tech jobs that insisted we go in to the office before now can face losing employees to other places that are willing to let their employees stay remote...if and when they try and make us go back. The box has been opened and no matter what staying at home is a bargaining chip/perk that if some are offering, the ones that don't will get to feel the hurt of losing people. At least that's my hope...it should never go away and at the very least should stay an option for those that want it.

I mean...they obviously don't like being forced to work our way...so I think this could be a learning moment for them to not continue to force us to work their way from this point on. Probably not...but I can hope.

Basically...people who like to go to the office probably just like objectively bad stuff that makes life terrible for everyone.
