If they existed long before us, then they should have been able to do it in a few million years. And they have had plenty of time as the galaxy itself is almost as old as the universe.

If they just started, then sure, it's possible they are out there and we'll see them soon. But they need to hurry the hell up lol
But why? Why would some civilization colonize the 200-400 billion stars in the galaxy even if given millions of years?

Dude, there is indeed a shortage of tech workers. We are not talking skilled labor that only takes 6 months to 2 years to train. The Chinese and Indians have been training specialized tech skills for many many years now. You need like 4-6 years -- almost like the number of years needed when doing a plumbing or electrician apprenticeship. There literally aren't enough Americans that are skilled specifically for the work required in certain tech fields and manufacturing sectors. The labor required needs special training, and not enough Americans are in those fields right now.
No there isn't. It's only in a couple of areas within tech, and those are not really the ones coming on H1Bs, and there are other visas for highly specialized people.

These companies layoff tens of thousands of Americans and then immediately apply for tens of thousands of H1Bs.

For the majority, it's just a way to save money and get easy to abuse workers. Healthcare makes up only 5%, and can be focused on separately.

gikos posted...
this doesn't make companies magically hire locals tho all this does is make them cut down on their work force and off load it to other countries as seen with recent lay off's happening
this is just trump admin making it easier to grift more by making companies bribe him to work around it
Tech offshoring causes more trouble than it's worth, especially for smaller guys. Many of those layoffs had almost immediate applications for H1Bs. AI is already a threat to tech workers, so there's no reason to add in a bunch of additional cheap competition anymore.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Almost all of that has other visas available. Those that have legitimate need can be focused on separately.

I mean, people have stated in this topic that Japan has an aging population, but I don't think anyone has said that it is *exclusive* to Japan, have we? The problem is just as bad in many Western European countries as well, and the solution is, well, immigration and improving quality of life as much as possible, but even then I still think the long-term solution is probably some sort of UBI.
Immigration doesn't really help with aging populations, and can make it worse depending on the ages coming. People act like immigrants are temporary and don't get old. To make any dents, the inflow needs to be young and grow exponentially to unsustainable levels. An immigrant couple needs 3 children to be a net positive of 1.

You can target specific sectors with temporary workers to help with tax base and social obligations, but otherwise, aging populations are inevitable. Some immigration might stave off the population decline part for a bit, but not aging population, which can potentially be exacerbated.

We will likely never go back to the needed levels of growth, and need to find other solutions.

That's really NYC's huge problem - there are a lot of vacant units in NYC but many of them are in ultra-luxury buildings and aren't accessible to the average city resident (many of them are like 7-8 million dollar luxury units). Developers gambled on being able to bring trust fund kids and oil billionaires to NYC and that gamble seems to have slowed, to the point where there is a glut of luxury housing, yet more luxury housing continues to be built.

What NYC *needs* is the luxury housing market to crash and crash hard so that developers finally stop gambling on more billionaires buying their 3rd NYC condo, which is probably why the wealthy class are so scared of a mayor who wants to tax the rich
Eh, the housing problem is because of gentrification. The 8 million population hasn't changed much in 25 years. Things were still affordable just 5 years ago. Gullible transplants pay whatever for once affordable stuff, pushing regular people out.

It's much harder to fake identification, much harder to fake a proper arrest warrant, and much more likely that the person arresting you can actually tell you why you're being detained.

DarthEnvoy posted...
Looking back at that assassin, he kind of wasted his time perfecting his cop disguise when anyone can just walk into a federal building with a mask on, zero identification and arrest people with no one contesting it.

thronedfire2 posted...
Ok, and how do the federal building security ensure that these people are actually ICE?

They must be carrying some sort of ID, and a warrant.
They were in a federal courthouse.. You can't just waltz in there unless you've been cleared. You have to go through metal detectors to even enter the building. There's also an ICE ERO office down the hall, so many of them work right there. It's the safest place for arrests for everybody involved.

A warrant is not required, though they did say they had a warrant, probably administrative, which they almost always have. They don't have to show it to random people. Judicial warrants are only needed for private residences.

LightSnake posted...
The reason Lander was at that court is because weeks ago, ICE began deliberately re-arresting people attending their court hearings, with the stated goal of stripping them of the right to see a judge and instead subjecting them to rapid, judge-free deportation.
They are being put into expedited removal. Biden removed like 1 million using expedited removals, and Obama did 1.75 million using it, both the majority of removals. People might not agree with it, but it's legal and always has been, especially since most of these people would have come in the past 1-3 years.

This is similar to Biden's June 2024 EO at the border, and why things slowed down even before Trump made it even stricter. Most of the city and state want deportations because it has put a lot of unnecessary stress on working class minority neighborhoods throughout the city, especially in Queens and the Bronx, and the city and the state are still spending billions extra on top of all that.

The ones trying to stop it are a tiny minority, which is why this is not gonna help Lander. It might even hurt both Lander and Mamdani. It looks bad to a lot of the outer boroughs/city. People around me in Queens have been rolling their eyes at the stunt, especially since it happened days from the election. Ras Baraka was also arrested by ICE, yet he flopped in the election last week in NJ.

Hochul getting too involved would probably walk us right into Stefanik in 2026. Hochul is already on very thin ice.

POCA doesnt apply in federal immigration courts, so they don't need any warrant at all, not even administrative, let alone judicial. And as I posted yesterday in that other topic, if you try to obstruct ICE, you will be arrested. ICE can arrest/detain US citizens, so Lander is wrong there too.
