How many books are left after Winds of Winter?

Adding to what they said, a chunk of Winds is actually going to be spillover that didn't fit in Dance (as in they physically couldn't bind the books without reducing the page count).

GRRM's original outline listed three major phases: the Stark/Lannister War, Dany's invasion of Westeros, and the showdown with the Others. To date, we're five books in and haven't began the second phase in earnest. So he's either going to truncate the rest of the story to wrap it up in seven books or he's going to expand the number of books he intends to write. Or he could just not bother with any of it since he's filthy rich and his heart is no longer in it. Spoiler alert: it's that last thing.

https://apnews.com/article/trump-pardon-biden-justice-department-ed-martin-d525b1911534a40f70394fddf396acc1

The Justice Department posted pardons online bearing identical copies of President Donald Trumps signature before quietly correcting them this week after what the agency called a technical error.

The replacements came after online commenters seized on striking similarities in the presidents signature across a series of pardons dated Nov. 7, including those granted to former New York Mets player Darryl Strawberry, former Tennessee House speaker Glen Casada and former New York police sergeant Michael McMahon. In fact, the signatures on several pardons initially uploaded to the Justice Departments website were identical, two forensic document experts confirmed to The Associated Press.

Within hours of the online speculation, the administration replaced copies of the pardons with new ones that did not feature identical signatures. It insisted Trump, who mercilessly mocked his predecessors use of an autopen, had originally signed all the Nov. 7 pardons himself and blamed technical and staffing issues for the error, which has no bearing on the validity of the clemency actions.

It's always, always, always projection with this guy.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Thursday evening a new operation dubbed Southern Spear to quash narco-terrorists in the Western Hemisphere.

Hegseth said the mission is being led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) to defend the Homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere, and secures our Homeland from the drugs that are killing our people.

The Western Hemisphere is Americas neighborhood and we will protect it, he wrote on social media.

The announcement comes as Hegseth, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine and other senior military leaders reportedly briefed President Trump on Wednesday at the White House regarding military options for the region, including potential land strikes against Venezuela.

Operation Southern Spear is known by some as Operation Distract From the Epstein Emails.

I understand not liking Schumer generally, but I've seen no real indication that Democrats ending the shutdown is his fault, or anyone's really, other than the 8 or so centrist Dems who decided to vote with Republicans. The leaders of each half of Congress are supposed to lead their people, but they don't actually have the power to compel them to vote one way or another on anything.

He's either sincere when he says he opposed the deal, meaning he lacked the leadership to stop the eight from crossing the aisle to work with Republicans to strip millions of Americans of their healthcare, or he's lying and coordinated this in a way that puts the blame on the least exposed members of his caucus. Either way, he needs to be shamed and run out of town.

In case you're wondering, here's how he reacted to Texas' redistricting.

Florida, Indiana, and others are looking to do the same thing. More seats equals less Crime, a great Economy, and a STRONG SECOND AMENDMENT. It means Happiness and Peace. But Republicans, there is one thing even better - STOP MAIL-IN VOTING, a total fraud that has no bounds. Also, go to PAPER BALLOTS before it is too late - At one tenth the cost, faster, and more reliable. If we do these TWO things, we will pick up 100 more seats, and the CROOKED game of politics is over. God Bless America!!!

Civilization VI - The end game isn't nearly as interesting as the early game and there is no vassalage system, meaning you have to micromanage conquered cities/empires.

XCOM 2 - The occasional wonkiness that results in a soldier taking wounds they shouldn't take (e.g. a soldier's shot catching their cover on fire, said fire burning the flood out from under them, resulting in fall damage).

Refresher: A sheriff in Kansas raided a local newspaper's office and its editor's home because they were investigating him and his friend, a local restauranteur. The warrant was obtained on false pretense and the raids carried out to punish and intimidate the reporters. The editor's elderly mother, the paper's co-owner, died of a heart attack the day after the raid. The sheriff tampered with witnesses and destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover his ass after the story blew up nationally.

https://apnews.com/article/kansas-newspaper-raid-press-freedom-c18f46a215908198335ca6f608c3360b

A rural Kansas county has agreed to pay a little more than $3 million and apologize over a law enforcement raid on a small-town weekly newspaper in August 2023 that sparked an outcry over press freedom.

Marion County sheriffs officers were involved in the raid on the Marion County Record and helped draft search warrants used by Marion city police to enter the newspapers offices, the publishers home and the home of a local city council member.

They intentionally wanted to harass us for reporting the news, and youre not supposed to do that in a democracy, the editor and publisher, Eric Meyer, said Tuesday. He added he hoped the payment was large enough to discourage similar actions against other news organizations in the future.

The raid prompted five federal lawsuits against the county, the city of Marion and local officials. Meyers 98-year-old mother Joan, the papers co-owner, died of a heart attack the next day, something he blames on the stress of the raid.

During the raid, authorities seized cellphones and computers from the newsroom and rifled through reporters desks. Search warrants linked the raid to a dispute between a local restaurant owner and the newspaper, which had obtained a copy of her driving record while reporting on her request for a city liquor license. The raid also came after the newspaper had dug into the background of the police chief at the time who led the raid.

So now the tax payers are on the hook for $3 million to settle lawsuits stemming from police misconduct. I suspect the standard for hiring law enforcement officers would be a lot higher if these settlements were paid out of police pensions. The good news is the sheriff is facing felony charges for obstruction of justice.

https://abovethelaw.com/2025/11/conservative-warning-to-judges-get-on-board-with-trumps-agenda-or-get-impeached/

The Federalist Societys annual lawyers meeting is going on in Washington D.C., and yesterday there was a panel on Judicial Oversight of District Courts after Trump v. CASA, limiting lower courts ability to issue universal injunctions to block the enforcement of policies. Though conservatives won that case, and have a wildly partisan win rate at the Supreme Court, panelist Chad Mizelle, former chief of staff to the Attorney General, still finds plenty to complain about.

Mizelles comments called out district courts that have tried to place constitutional speed bumps on the Trump agenda. Like his former boss, Mizelle says these are liberal judges that arent acting in good faith (never mind that Reagan-appointed judges are leading the charge). And he knows what we should do about it. Impeach them.

Whats going to force the Supreme Court to do something is fundamentally political pressure. Its going to be when Congress starts impeaching judges and saying You are now encroaching into our territory, Mizelle said during a panel discussion at the Federalist Societys annual lawyers meeting in Washington.

Mizelles impeachment battle cry followed a somewhat cryptic story he shared that appeared to involve an implicit threat his father once issued to put down a stray cat in the familys yard.

What do I think DJT should do? He should stand up, and hes already done this, and say, Judges, I know how to deal with stray cats, said Mizelle, who served as acting associate AG and chief of staff to AG Pam Bondi before stepping down last month. (Mizelles wife, Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, is a Trump-appointed federal district court judge in Florida.)

Just another step on the path to fascism.

Cornell University has agreed to pay $60 million and accept the Trump administrations interpretation of civil rights laws in order to restore federal funding and end investigations into the Ivy League school.

Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff announced the agreement on Friday, saying it upholds the universitys academic freedom while restoring more than $250 million in research funding that the government withheld amid investigations into alleged civil rights violations. He said the governments funding freeze had stalled research, upended careers and threatened the future of academic programs.

The university agreed to pay $30 million directly to the U.S. government along with another $30 million toward research that will support U.S. farmers.

The agreement requires Cornell to comply with the governments interpretation of civil rights laws on issues involving antisemitism, racial discrimination and transgender issues. A Justice Department memo that orders colleges to abandon diversity, equity and inclusion programs and transgender-friendly policies will be used as a training resource for Cornells faculty and staff.

The campus must also provide a wealth of admissions data that the government has separately sought from campuses to ensure race is no longer being considered as a factor in admissions decisions. Trump has suggested some campuses are ignoring a 2023 Supreme Court decision ending affirmative action in admissions.

Academia's capitulation to these fascists is almost as disappointing as the mainstream media's.
