I think the closest comparison to Popplio/Brionne/Primarina would be the entire Chikorita starter line. Popplio is at least gender neutral, but Brionne/Primarina are feminine looking. The entire Chikorita starter line looks feminine, so that's one thing they have in common with Brionne/Primarina. However, it was much easier to ignore Chikorita since it was Grass type and it came after Gen I where the starter battle was mainly Charmander vs. Squirtle, so a lot of people developed a preference for choosing Fire or Water starters in later generations.

Chikorita and its evolutions also sucked in-game. Playing through GSC would have been quite rough with Chikorita, since the entire starter line has poor offensive stats. This is not even an issue with Popplio and its evolutions, and Primarina can absolutely wreck shit in-game (and Water/Fairy is much better than Grass).

ctes: This Pokemon is such a b****. It doesn't just look utterly awful, like something you really want to step on. It isn't only completely useless with a type combination that another Pokemon in the same game completely outclasses it in. It has a godawful ability, that should have never existed. It's not only frustrating to catch in battle, it's frustrating to catch outside of battle too as if one of the two weren't plenty on their own! It's complete garbage and I will be insanely disappointing if we don't rank this one in at the very worst case, bottom 10.

pyresword: By design alone Magearna is only good, but not great. I absolutely love the way this thing functions competitively though. (At least in RandBats which is all I play)

Luster Soldier: The first ever Gen VII Pokemon to be revealed and it did not disappoint me. Almost immediately, the Pokemon's design invoked comparisons to Diancie because both of them are cute and feminine. The design resembles something that would have resulted from Diancie and Klink producing offspring. However, Magearna is definitely inferior to Diancie in terms of design. Diancie is both cuter and more feminine than Magearna, in addition to having a Mega Evolution. For most of the pre-release hype phase, this was my favorite Gen VII Pokemon. Only during the last 4 weeks leading up to the release date did we finally get new Pokemon that would dethrone Magearna from my number 1 Gen VII spot.

Cybat: Its name confused me for a while because I thought it was being called a mage, despite being artificial. It's a bizarre concept, but I kind of like how it turned out. And you can't go wrong with Steel/Fairy typing.

ctes: Magearna is really cool. They make these things every generation, but Magearna is a lot more interesting than most if not all the others. Steel / Fairy is a cool typing too being a lot better than the mono-typing a bunch of the other cute mythical Pokemon has. It's also absolutely fantastic competively, really dominating the OU tier since Meta Metangross was banned. It's lovely to use. It's ability is really good too, though it is a bit lame how similar to Beast Boost it is.

OrangeCrush: Mangiana

PrinceKaro: It's a schoolgirl bunny robot maid. That's like the most japanese pokemon ever.

Inviso: I dislike most legendary Pokemon on principle. I feel like legendaries were at their best when it was just a small handful within a much larger generation. Given that a solid chunk of every new generation is nothing but legendaries, I've soured on the concept and it takes a special Pokemon to make me like it. Magearna is not that Pokemon. Its design is hideous, and it's not even a unique typing. No, we already have TWO Steel/Fairy Pokemon. We don't need some bullshit EVENT legendary that covers a pre-existing type. Get the fuck outta here with that shit. This thing is just Diancie all over again, without the dumb fucking decision to make it a Mega Evolution as well.

The thing is so fun though. Probably my favorite addition to the Random Battles meta in this gen. (Though to be fair I think a lot of the pokemon this gen were not so great for that, but oh well.)

Luster Soldier: Super cute fruit Pokemon. Being cute is really the only thing going for Bounsweet, as both of the later evolved forms are much more feminine. Bounsweet is based on a fruit called the mangosteen, which is a fruit I never knew existed before this Pokemon was revealed.

Paratroopa1: it's ok bounsweet, nobody else likes pokemon that are tiny fruit with little faces on them, but I like you

ctes: Bounsweet is cute, but not really anything outside of that. Pretty bland and it's not difficult to make a Pokemon cute. I gets a placement above all the trash, but not much higher than that.

ctes: Sandygast evolves way too late considering its trash stats and its stat distrubution sucks too, but aside from that it's pretty cool. I do like it when they make ghost types like this, so it gets an average ranking.

Cybat: Weirdly cute for an evil pile of possessed sand. The fact that it always has a shovel in its head is pretty silly though.

Paratroopa1: ugh something about its... mouth. it just has a face I do not like. I feel bad because he's sorta funny otherwise. digging the shovel look. fuck that was not a pun
