There's a scene where a girl gets cat called by a bunch of old pervs and she told them off.

I'm sure that's the reason the little incels are mad.

I mean, yes, I saw complaints about that. But they seem extremely angry about Lian pretending to be Nowa's girlfriend to embarass him in front of his aunt.

Those spoilers are not particularly spoilery spoilers. Apparently in the Japanese translation she doesn't do that, never mind that it's absolutely 100% in character for her regardless, they don't care about it being an accurate characterization at all.

To go back to Suikoden 3 we had a whole clan of dark skinned people. The dark skinned, blonde haired Native American stand in Karaya tribe were a big part of the game.

Things have gotten much more toxic in the gaming community since the PS2 era and it sickens me.

Yeah, a lot of the "woke" talking points is that supposedly the localization changed a lot of the dialogue, this being one of those things where it wasn't present in the original Japanese dialogue.

I mean, Japanese is a hard language to translate into English; a lot of concepts are lost in translation, as it were. Makes sense that localizers would take liberties with the script where neccessary for an English-speaking audience.

Honestly localizations are better now than they were in the NES and SNES days. Also you can't directly translate from Japanese to English. I mean you can but it doesn't flow naturally.

I don't feel like the scores are a fair show of the game, because it seems to be based around the horrible switch port but all switch port are garbage because the switch can't handle new games.
Generally, yeah. Unicorn Overlord does well on the Switch though.

Yeah so my copy finally came in the mail earlier, and after playing for about 40 minutes so far a modern reviewer's opinion isn't worth shit on this one. This is pure oldschool goodness people. Literally just suikoden with really nice looking 2.5D graphics (real nice spritework from what I seen so far). You really do need to find savepoints either in dungeons or at the inn, but there is a autosave slot that I see so you wouldn't lose a crapton of progress in case of a power outage or something like that I'm assuming.

I got a PS5 load video uploading if anyone curious.

Thanks for the video! Granted I'd be getting it for the PS4 which obviously is older tech but one of the complaints I heard about too was how the UI and menus loaded slow even on the PS5 wtf!?! I don't know what some people are smoking. I am leaning towards getting it again.

A review is just telling us their opinion. There is nothing different from a review today and one twenty years ago. People always got mad when a review doesn't match what they wanted the game to get. I was on game faqs when people freaked out over Twilight Princess getting an 8.8.

If you like something that is what matters.

It's not surprising that 25 year old game mechanics may not be as fondly received now as then but everybody. Ultimately, find a reviewer that seems close to your tastes and look at the general pros and cons and not just the score. A con for them may be a pro for you and vice versa and that's ok. Those who want an old school experience seems like they'll get it. But it won't be for everyone.

There is a gigantic difference between a review today and one from twenty years ago......the obvious being there is a higher chance of someone with a lot of experience playing those type of games during their original release periods in the 90s and thus will review the games accordingly to the standards of the time (ex., saving everywhere wasn't common, so something like this would never be a complain and thus will never be in consideration for docking the score of a rpg).

A good hit of these eiyuden chronicles reviews is coming from young 20 to early 30 somethings that is complaining about the horrors of finding a save point and actually docking points for something like this. The type of people interested in retro throw back games like this, a.k.a. me ain't trying to hear no goober whine about a save point, tell me how does the battle system feel in comparison to it's spiritual successor. I do feel that performance complaints is 100 percent fair though.....if a game is having a rough time performing then that should be known and docked points for accordingly.

In the perfect video gaming world I am sure every single one of us want to genuinely believe "reviews don't matter, its about what you love" and trust me....I get it. I got so many games that got crapped on. The truth is reviews do matter do a good extent, because way too many gamers will only try out a game a reviewer tell them to and that is going to affect games that I like. Games that I like selling like crap=that much harder to get more games that I like made.

As awesome as I really liked god hand, that shitty 3/10 review from IGN did it absolutely no favors.

No? That's not a given. There's a reason many mechanics were left in the past. Things like saving made more accessible. Just because somebody has played games since then doesn't mean they won't dock a new game for lacking certain newer QoL features.

Maybe so, but for a game like this one where it is blatantly obvious what the main target is going to be about not a huge lot of us is actually going to care about not being to save anywhere and is going to be at the bottom of the priority list. Is the battle system good, is the story good, is the characters good, is the base building and war minigames good, is the duels good, and is the music good.....this is what people like me (well more like my brother and friend. I'm a backer so I'm invested in this no matter what) who is coming into this game expecting a suikoden-like is going to want to know from a reviewer, and hopefully this reviewer was a fan of these rpgs in that time period so they can mainly talk about these first. A lot of these reviews aren't even talking about a lot of things like this.

The main point that is also killing the game is the large cast of characters. I have seen people admit they were too overwhelmed by the cast of playable and recruitable characters and think it is killing the game.

This is partly why Suikoden died out.

Is there any place online where it shows all of the characters so people can look at them and pick out which ones interest them the most? And how many characters do you generally take with you into a battle in this game? I'm just wondering. When I think of "RPG with dozens of possible characters to use but you generally only use a small party of them" my first thoughts are Pokemon and Fire Emblem. Is it as extreme as Pokemon where you have to narrow down that big roster to a really small number like 6, or is it more forgiving like Fire Emblem where you can use like 12-15 or so?

I understand that portability is very appealing since it works for those that is away on the job alot but can get some game time in between breaks, commutes, flights and whatnot (this is exactly why my bro has a lot of his rpgs on the switch and also is seriously considering a steam deck after I showed him mine. Get that game time in while you can, lol), but its definitely at that point that something like a steam deck or those other gaming portables like they asus one should be considered for a better experience.

Actually I don't know why someone would stress about the amount of characters eiyuden in particular has. Apparently not a single hero is missable aside a certain one that is supposedly blatantly obvious at the end of the game.

*Nothing too serious behind that spoiler bar, just talking about if you can miss any heroes or not. Didn't name anyone.....not that I could since I don't know the name myself.*

And Chrono Cross single handily killed that kind of feature for many people. Quite a few people didn't give Suikoden a chance because of the high character count, reminding them of Chrono Cross.

And before you bring up Pokemon, those are monsters, not actual characters.

I'm really loving the cast thus far, and I've seen only one character I would consider genuinely bad for combat. Despite the amount of characters they maintain a pretty stress free level to recruit them. Nothing ridiculously hard and nothing seems to be missable.

Also there's a forest area that gives me Grandia nostalgia so bad it's painful not too far in. :( A tip for that area too: The Great Wood boss auto counters everything physical but won't respond to magic attacks, so either stock up on healing items or bring a bunch of magic users to make that right less tedious.

I also caved and got the PC version. I had to redo a specific very tedious dungeon three times because my switch version kept crashing, which doesn't seem terribly common from reports, but my rage won over my wallet.

The translation IS apparently bad. Nothing really political in it, other than using modern slang like chud, but Ive seen examples where the Japanese audio is basically just Hmmm and they turned it into a 20 word sentence.

Hopefully there will be a fan translation mod by the time I play it like there was for Suikoden.

Translations being bad is sadly a fact of life. While I wish we were past that and do believe in general today's translations are much better then they were twenty years ago of course bad ones still happen. Just they should be criticized for the right reasons. Plus now we live in the era where translations can be made better with patches. Though I don't think that's too common.

What Ive seen, its like they ran the Japanese script through ChatGPT or Google Translate or something.

Sadly, if its fixed, patches wont fix the English dub, so I doubt theyll patch it as it would create a mismatch between a good translation and voice recording of a bad translation.

Its not so much the FPS that people are annoyed with when it comes to the switch version, but the load times. God damn those loads would annoy the shit out of me very, very quickly.

https://imgur.com/a/4WorMyW

On the switch it has lengthy loads for the random encounters and story cutscene transitions, and since that is the things people would be seeing the most throughout the game I can imagine its going to aggravate many people.

That is Albert Odyssey level bad. 5-10 seconds before and after every battle with a high encounter rate which means several steps then battle.

No, I was commenting on the translation supposedly being bad, and saying I doubt it even comes close to how bad the Breath of Fire 2 translation was.

Ill be playing it on PC instead of crippled mobile hardware that was outdated when it came out, so Im not at all concerned about load times.

I wish I saw that user's post on the Eiyuden board before I bought the game. I was in the middle of the download when I saw it. I just put on Long Gone Days lol I never got the good ending. Persona 3 Reload coulda worked but just now I feel like shooting people in a more realistic game setting after I wasted my money lawl.

Most of my issues are nitpicking. I hate that I can't freely control the camera because it makes wandering dungeons and towns weird. I have the same issue with the Star Ocean 2 remake
