You've set up parameters that a game is to be longer and more emotionally engaging. Yes games are shorter (for the most part. I don't want to get into a story versus content debate), and I would say requiring games to have like a 40 hour main story is an unfair requirement.

Take something like disgaea. I think most people here like the game, but it's basically a comedy, are you really going to be emotionally engaged in it? Because if you're argument is like "Modern RPGs don't emotionally engage me like past generations" then you have to ask why? Is it because the game is not as good or is it because the game is different?

wtf is this graphics vs. story debate?

stupid ****

This is not a graphics versus story debate. Unless someone is literally making an argument that a game being shorter means the story is not as good. While I'd have issues if games were like 10 hours long, something like 20 hours (which seems to be average) is plenty of time to do what an RPG should.

Fair point, Disgaea is a good, funny game. No doubt about that.

I kind of want a good bit more in the way of FFVII, FFT, Xenogears and Vagrant Story out of my current JRPGs, though. Nothing more than their ability to tell a darker, deeper story. That's all. I don't think I'm blindfolding myself to a whole slew of games from the genre that are actually doing this because I've tried several and given them all as fair a shot as I can and it's just not happening by comparison.

It's a bad situation to be in and I genuinely envy those who don't feel similarly, heh.

Man I like seeing someone else with this kind of sentiment. I always laugh when people accuse me of liking stuff only if it's obscure/non-mainstream. It's silly, because if I had my way, my likes would be super mainstream, that way I'd get to play/listen to/etc more of them! It would be great if the less popular stuff that I like were actually popular.

I think I'm more interested in good characters than I am a good story when it comes to RPGs. I can get a good story from a lot of places, but from my experience, most genres don't really give the attention to character development that RPGs do. It's not really any coincidence that my favorite games feature my favorite characters in most cases (usually the lead).

Boy, I hear ya, Panthera. Agree on that one.

Leonhart, I know what you mean. I think they're both pretty damn important, though -- FFT and Xenogears are my favorite games because their stories are so good. FFT's story isn't quite as good as Xenogears' but its gameplay takes a significant edge overall, so there's that. But then again, Xenogears is better about exploration because FFT is a strategy RPG, so...

Ugh, nevermind that train of thought.

But yes, casts are important as hell.

The translation? Yeah, absolutely. Xenogears gets really bad about that too. Xenogears is actually a huge part of the reason Square realized they needed a big localization studio. Their original guy walked when he saw the subject matter and their replacement, Richard Honeywood, nearly became a drug addict from the pressure. Or so they say, so they say...

But FFT's PSP translation is, awkward in style or not, superior. And Xenogears... well, hm. It could use a fresh coat.

I'm more willing to forgive those sorts of issues if the story and cast are top-notch though, which I believe is the case with both games. Not to mention it's easier to deal with things like bad localization with text boxes and it's easier to deal with bad voice acting when there isn't any. (Just saying.)

Oh, they're both important, obviously, but I think as long as the game can hook me with characters I love, that's the most important thing. Do I think FFVIII has a GOAT storyline? No, I don't. It certainly has issues, but because Squall is my most favoritest character in the history of the ever all-time, FFVIII is one of my favorite games of all time. Even the bad parts of games aren't so bad as long as I love the characters in them. I'm the same way with movies. A lot of people rip some of the PotC movies or the Spider-Man movies, but I love Jack Sparrow and Spider-Man so darn much that I can deal with it and still enjoy the movies people say aren't so good!

My three favorite games are FFX, FFVIII, and MGS3.

Would you also like to guess who my three favorite characters are?

I'm no Jeff but the translation is of course awful (although I mainly laugh at it in the way that everyone laughs at "knock you all down"). Actual quality of writing though, no way. I love the story of FFT prior to it going pretty bleh at the very end and it's one of my favourite games ever in terms of making characters that need very little screen time to feel memorable and "real" to me.

Which is a big reason FFX is my favorite. FFX's Big Three trumps any other game's Big Three by a wide margin (of the games that I've played, obviously).

Despite our general disagreements you've got my number three all-time game there and another that I'm pretty high on as well. MGS3 is somehow the exception to my usual taste in video game writing, being as lengthy and bloated as it is (albeit less so than MGS2). No idea why, but it managed to draw me in like only a couple of other games ever have. And it was a blast to play too, which is always important.

Tidus, Yuna and Auron of course, right? They're a pretty stellar Big Three, that's for damn sure.

I don't feel like there's a Big Three with a lot going for it in FFVIII, but that's just me. As you know by now, I quite like the game relative to gaming in general but it's not to me what it is to you. (Although Squall is in my top ten video game characters; fancy them lions.)

Fei, Elly and Citan from Xenogears is still my favorite in this arena.

Squall and Laguna are both pretty amazing to me. FFVIII doesn't have a really strong #3 though, admittedly, as far as someone who just captivates you.

I love Zell a whole lot, but at the end of the day, he's a secondary character who gets very little time in the spotlight.

There is a huge problem with graphics, but it has little to nothing to do with story. The main problem is all the work it takes to develop. It doesn't just cost a lot of money, but a heck of a lot of time. RPGs are already a lot of work, and with how much longer they are, yeah making them with top quality graphics and presentation is a pain. And, as someone mentioned, graphics play a huuuuuge part in attracting mainstream gamers these days, which is where the sales are. Square-Enix themselves have stated that they MUST make their main Final Fantasy titles with state of the art graphics because that's what is expected of the Final Fantasy name.

I have honestly never really thought of the idea of a "Big Three" of characters in games before. Thinking on it, I can't think of many cases where there isn't one character who stands way above the rest, or the third place spot would be too close between multiple characters.

It's my 4th favorite FF game!

Zidane/Dagger/Vivi/Steiner is a great party, but who cares about the rest of those guys!

Zidane falls short of the other PS1-era leads, too. Not that I don't love him. When I ranked him in my Favorite FF Characters List, he was #6, but he was behind, well, all the other leads in the PS generation (sans Lightning because FFXIII hadn't come out yet when I started that list; well, and substituting Balthier in for Vaan for FFXII, I guess).

I love my video game leads.

Nope, I'm alright with her. She's pretty bad at first but she cools down quickly enough. She has a few utterly facepalm lines after that but all in all it's a good kind of variety to the cast.

And that post was mostly in jest. I just have a hard time liking Freya all that much when she disappears from the narrative after 5 hours. There's a line in Bran Bal that is both wonderful and at the same time really accentuates the lack of depth behind Amarant.

Zidane: "You had a mother and father, right?"
Amarant: "What kind of question is that?"

FFIX-style snappy writing at its finest with Amarant's reply there, but it also shows us just how little we know of the guy.
