yes thats right there are 900 unique songs that have been in a VGMusic Contest run by Ed Bellis (Mario spinofff not included).
This past week I have been listening to many songs good and bad, great and terrible and I have ranked them all to the best of my ability.
I believe Ed Bellis himself was planning on taking on this big project at one point but you know how flaky Ed can get with big projects. Unlike Surskit who was unable to finish ranking his top 1000+ vgmusic songs, I INTEND to finish this list.
Expect a bunch of grouchy comments even in some of the songs I like.
Also keep in mind I did not rank 6 songs that got replaced in a contest or songs that were found illegible after the contest was over. The songs were: Fire Tripper, Fighting of the Spirit Phantasia, Trans Project Stage 1, Atlach=Nacha ~Going On~, Dance of Thorns, and The Impossible Game Theme.
So yeah hopefully you enjoy reading this list with me.

However I HAVE to make an exception for the bottom 2 songs.
900. Girl in the Tower (King's Quest VI)

I've come to like vocal songs more a bit over the years. Sure I still think a bunch of them are kind of boring/annoying but at least there are also a whole bunch of songs I actually like and love.
However there are songs like THESE that just go out of their way to try to not... be good at all.
Like, I’m usually not fond of those opera ballad songs or whatever, but this song is seriously just trying way too hard to be cheesy/emotional or something.
Like I mean when you get to the later part of the song, the guy singer literally screams OOOOHHH IMMM CALLLLLLLINNN OUUUTTTTTT. I mean what.
I would only consider recommending this song to the most hardcore Theatre people I know and even then I would probably only recommend it to my Theather teacher in high school who I did not like at all.
899. Title Screen (Crazy Bus)

Oh my god the year of Crazy Bus. The first truly truly terrible song a VGMC song has ever had.
I don’t think anyone will legitimately try to argue this is a good song, not even the most hardcore chiptunes fans.
Ok seriously I swear these are the worst samples I’ve heard in the history of anything. Just like in Girl in the Tower, this song is going out of its way to annoy the listener with not only the worst samples ever but probably the most incoherent ‘melody’ ever.
And it does it the whole song.
Damn you Venezuela.

This song would not be so low if it weren’t for that ****ing awful singer.
I’m not a fan of high-pitched singing in general, but holy crap this singer really hurts to listen to. It’s especially even worse towards the middle of the loop when she squeals oooh mmahhh gahhh
Also it doesn’t help that this song is trying to be hard to be ridiculously cheesy and obnoxious.

Unlike the songs below it we have our first song that’s offensive because it does absolutely NOTHING.
Oh wait every 3 minutes there’s an occasional use of KILLER KILLER KILLER KILLER KILLER KILLER fantastic stuff.
I can’t believe I had to listen to 10 minutes of nothing.

This song doesn’t have obnoxious singers or 10 minutes of nothing.
However I’m trying to figure out what there is to enjoy about this song... at all.
Can someone inform me please.

894.The Genesis (Persona 4)

Alright, I love Persona 4 and all. The final battle was pretty cool I guess.
But do P4 fans actually try to listen to this song without context I mena really.
It’s not quite as bad as the 10 minutes of nothing below it since it does do something but that loud sudden synth that plays every 5 seconds is kinda annoying.
Also there are random parts of almost nothing.
The only somewhat tolerable parts of this song are the parts at around 5:30 and 6:50 and even then the instruments still kinda hurt to listen to.
It’s a ridiculous chore to listen to this song.
893.Crumbling Castle (Ape Escape)

This song is really annoyingly repetitive. I dunno what that thing that keeps making that ridiculous song for the WHOLE SONG. But it gets more annoying to listen to the farther I get into the song.
892.Roar of the Departed Souls (Lost Odyssey)

Speaking of trying too hard…
The choir trying to be EPIC in the first minute was way more annoying than ‘cool’.
The guitar part after is slightly better but not by much.
Then once the choir comes back in the song gets progressively more annoying to listen to.
“Awesome” Video Game Music indeed.
891.Gone Guru (Dead Rising)

I like some rap/hip-hop songs.
However, when I first listened to this song I was seriously like “what the **** is this”.
That backing instrument is annoying to listen to and the actual rapping is really obnoxious.
I wonder what great ‘context’ I’m missing by not paying Dead Rising and hearing this song.
890.Escape from the City (Sonic Adventure 2)

Our first song to appear in multiple contests oh boy.
I like Sonic Adventure 2 and I have never been a fan of this song at all.
I guess it fits the stage it plays in which is probably why this song isn’t TOO low. Being shorter than the others helps also.
But seriously it’s pretty ridiculously cheesy as hell (in a bad way) and the lyrics certainly don’t help.

888.Ai no Uta (Pikmin)
Appeared in: VGMC2
Suffers the same problems as Ashley’s Song with it’s ridiculously obnoxious vocals this time being ridiculously saccharine as opposed to being high pitched.
At least the instruments/(lack of) backing vocals aren’t as annoying as Ashley’s Song.
887.Sickness unto Foolish Death (Silent Hill 3)

When I first listened to this song, I thought there was actually something wrong with my speakers.
Turns out this song really wants to ear rape with you with these dumb sounds. Which sucks since the backing instruments actually sound kinda nice. (though that was probably the intent)
I guess this could work in game for the creepiness factor or something but this isn’t what this list for.
On a side note, so many songs from VGMC2, geez that must have been the worst overall year of the 5.
886.Live and Learn (Sonic Adventure 2)

Kinda like Escape from the City with even more CHEEEEESSEEEE.
LIVE AND LEARNNN. HANGIN ON THE EDGEE OF TOMORROOOWW.
I guess I have this over City Escape since it’s a bit more amusing and I haven’t had to hear it in a recent contest.

Many Touhou songs have at least one saving grace that prevents me from disliking it more. It could either be short, somewhat melodic, or not have annoying samples.
This song encompasses all 3 of these problems and just annoys the heck out of me whenever I try to listen to it.

I’ll be honest here I was surprised when I heard a Wall of noise like song in a popular SNES RPG. It’s definitely not what I usually exepct from SNES RPG Music but hey.
Any way even though this first minute is ridiculously bad, the second half actually.. isn’t too bad. Of course that doesn’t save what happens when the loop starts over…
872.Dancing Mad (Final Fantasy VI)
Holy crap why the hell is this song so ****ing long. I see a lot of people say this is ‘better’ than One Winged Angel, but I wonder if anyone actually has the patience to listen to all 17 minutes of this.
Anyway individually, the first 3 songs would just be generic ‘what ever’/meh songs at worst but the fact that you’re forced to listen to all 3 songs looped twice together is really annoying.
The one song’s saving grace is that Part 4 of the song is actually pretty cool (and I’m glad Dissidia shortened the song to just Part 4, good choice on their part).

Yes, I recognize that Hardcore to the Brain in and of itself isn't a "great" song, but man, that's a song that really gets your blood pumpin' and your adrenaline flowin' for boss fights in SH2.
Deserves more credit than that!
