What is League of Legends? League of Legends is a team game very similar to the WarCraft 3 custom map DotA. There are two bases, one on either side of the map and several "lanes" between the bases along which AI controlled units spawn. An overhead view of the 5v5 map looks about like this:
There is a base in the bottom left, and a base in the top right. 3 lanes connect the two bases and every 30 seconds AI controlled "minions" spawn in each lane. Everyone who is in the game controls 1 "champion" unit and your job as a team is to push your lanes and destroy the opposing base. The lanes are protected by turrets and so you need your own minions along side you to be able to kill the turrets without getting targeted by them. 2 bases, 3 lanes, 5 players per team.
What are Champions? Champions are the powerful units that you get to control. You pick 1 before the map loads and that is the champion you will use for that match. Champions start each match at level 1 their max level is 18. The important thing to consider is the stats of the champion you select will be affected by the level of your account.
What do 'account-levels' have to do with anything? When you create an account you have a level 1 account. That is called your 'Summoner Level'. You are the summoner, and the champion you select for the match is the 'summoned'. You increase your summoner level by playing matches. Every match you play will earn you XP and IP. Earning enough XP will increase your summoner level with the max level being 30. Wins are worth more XP/IP than losses, so try to win. Your summoner level also determines: (1) How many runes you can slot and (2) How many mastery points you can allot
If you are low leveled still and playing by yourself then the game will try and pair you against similarly leveled opponents, but if you are playing with higher leveled friends then it will seek higher leveled opponents. Just something to consider when you start learning how to play.

What is IP again? IP is the other kind of points you earn when you play matches. You earn both XP and IP and IP are the points that you use to purchase runes and champions. Yes, that’s right, you have to "buy" the champions, but you get the points for free so its not a bad deal. (You can also spend real money on champion packs if you would rather not take the time to earn them) The point is that you get the IP for free so you should figure out which champions you are good with and spend it on those. When you buy a champion you will have it unlocked on your account forever. And if you don't buy ANY champions, you will still have access to 10 of them. Every week there are 10 "free" champions. But they are only free for the week and 10 different champions will be free the next week. And so if you are level 1 you still have 10 champions available to you and so try them out, figure out which one you might like to spend points on and then buy it.
And so IP is good for Champions and Runes. You can also spend *real money* to unlock champions but you can NOT unlock runes with real money, only IP and so runes have to be earned.
To sum up: You have an account that goes up to level 30 (this is your summoner level) You earn XP (to level up the account) and IP (to buy champions/runes) every time you play a match You have rune pages (with up to 30 slots) You have a mastery page to spec (with up to 30 points) (and you can respec as much as you want)
This is probably a bit over-kill and so if something doesn’t quite make sense just ask and someone will clarify. And if you are going to start playing please post: (1) Your GameFAQs name (2) Your Summoner name (this is different than your log-in name) (3) Your preferred champions. It’s just nice to know which champions people prefer to play or use the most.

That reminds me that the listing of champions is pretty useless because I think almost everyone here can play all the champions if they really needed to!

That's true. Like for mine, I can use all the champions there AND a couple more quite well. The thing is though, Anivia is one of my top 5 favorite champions prolly but I'm awful with her so what do?

Skarner isn't ass but he's a little dependent on a team. His issue is that the way his Q works he just perpetually slows someone so you can get the kill fairly easily but it just takes a decent amount of time. They should slightly increase both the cooldown and slow on his Q. It's really his only problematic skill as far as balance goes. His E's heal is borderline OP in top lane since he can heal for like 150 every 8 seconds and his mana costs are super low as well.

Skarner's annoying, but that's about it. With a couple small buffs he'd be strong-ish, IMO. Not a jungler, though. Weak sustain without blue buff, poor closing ability, melee range disable. Compare: Xin (better closing ability, better sustain), GP (ranged disable, group closing ability), Nunu (better sustain and disable). I suppose if for some BIZARRE reason you needed a tanky hybrid DPS jungler, I think he's the best. Uh. When that'd ever come up, though, I dunno.
The dude over-exaggerates the hell out of the disadvantages of being placed on purple, but he has a point. I don't get why if it's such an issue during the laning phase why they just don't have an option to flip the HUD.
Although now I'm aware of the fact that I end up on purple a lot more often then blue. I must be good... maybe.

if you play locked-screen as purple you have an absolutely terrible time
sometimes if i'm bored i get away with locked screen as blue but yeah especially purple bot lane dear god

Well, learning to play with the free screen can be difficult for some people, at least at first because it's actually pretty easy to lose track of yourself and what's going on around you. Being on purple is really only a huge deal if you're bot, because the HUD covers roughly half of the goddamn lane/the area you're moving towards.
Playing with a perma locked in screen is a bad habit, but playing purple bot is pretty much a rude wake up call.

Using spacebar to recenter the screen on yourself should be apart of the tutorial

Yea Bottom has 2 people because of the Dragon. Say you gank someone bottom and the jungler is there. Having 2 people+Jungler is pretty much a sure dragon. Now if you had 1 person down there and they had 2 bottom and you kill one, you can't really act on it and take dragon because you don't know where their jungler is and it would still be 2v2 and you would be taking dragon aggro.
Dragon is actually worth more then a turret kill on team gold so it matters quite a bit. 190g for each person on your team is pretty huge it's like 9 minions-ish or 45 minions because it's x5 also the person who kills the dragon gets 25 so it's really like a 46 minion swing.

Edit: I've been starting with Doran's shield, 700 HP at the start is pretty worthwhile. Then Malady>mercs>whit's end/phage/madreds depending, then upgrade whatever. Mushrooms are amazing for map awareness, I'm almost sad when people run into them. We had dragon control every game, except the first one we lost.

Don't die. When you're starting the number one thing you should be looking at is not dying. Pay good attention to your map. If somebody's portrait isn't there, assume they are coming to kill you.
