I also can't wait for the Guardians to seriously just get the s*** kicked out of them, I've really grown to just utterly hate them. You can't even relate to their cause, they're SUPPOSED to be looking out for the better of the universe, but they're a step away from trying to rule it instead, which makes them no better than any other cosmic threat.

I'm actually really glad it's been so long in the making. Such a slow gradual burn of "wow, what dicks. WOW, more dickness. JESUS CHRIST THESE GUYS ARE DICKS!" for nearly 70 issues now, no out of the blue "suddenly, we're a******!" bull****.

I have half of the Batman and Robin writeup, and it's positive so I know it wasn't KoolAid or icon.

Based on the 3 Tomasi/Gleason issues so far it should be pretty good!

There's a reason Morrison personally hand-picked Tomasi to follow him on the book.

Batman and Robin, written by Peter J. Tomasi with art by Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/new-52-batman-and-robin/

Description: Everybody knows the Dynamic Duo, right? The Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder? Well, we do have the original Batman in this title. The millionaire playboy/philanthropist Bruce Wayne we all know and love is the man under the cowl. But his sidekick here is actually the fifth person to have taken up the domino mask. It's also none other than Bruce Wayne's own son Damian!

"Bruce Wayne has a son?!"

Yes. From having drugged-up desert sex with none other than the Daughter of the Demon herself, Talia al Ghul. Which makes Damian the grandson of this guy: external image

Oh and he was actually grown in a lab as a fetus, genetically engineered then trained by the League of Assassins, conditioned to become the ULTIMATE WARRIOR. With that kind of "upbringing," he basically turned into a brat who could kill you in a hundred different ways. Much hilarity (and mutilation!) ensued when he was first introduced to the Bat family, considering his desire to take his father's place while having his supervillain lineage and propensity to decapitate his enemies which obviously goes against Batman's strict "no killing" policy. He has mellowed out from being an arrogant antisocial criminal killer, thanks to Dick Grayson, the first Robin, who assumed the mantle of the Bat when Bruce was dead (err... traveling through time) and loosened up Damian and helped mold him into a worthy superhero sidekick.

So this is actually the very first time "Batman and Son" will be teaming up officially and, based on the solicits, the development of that relationship will be the crux of this book. For the first story arc, at least!

The Creative Team: So Peter J. Tomasi hasn't really done anything incredible, having been an editor for most of his comic book career. The only real noteworthy thing he's written was his limited run on Green Lantern Corps when he played the wingman to Geoff Johns in expanding the GL universe that's grown to the comics juggernaut it is now. He developed an ensemble cast, built relationships, created a truly scary villain (with the help of a certain artist) and made great use of an old one, and told some solid stories about intergalactic space cops that really strengthened the Green Lantern brand.

Patrick Gleason is the aforementioned artist I was talking about earlier. He was in charge of art duties for most of that acclaimed GLC run and he was a pretty good fit for it with his crazy, if sometimes confusing and cartoony, art that really showed the strange grotesqueries of the GL world. Which is perfect for Batman and Robin since the book has been the center of all sorts of surreal Batman stories with weird new villains.

external image
external image
external image

Oh and these two have actually worked on one B&R story already before this whole reboot thing. It had a creepy glowing villain who made the relatives of famous Arkham Asylum inmates commit suicide. It was pretty good.

here's koolaid's write-up:

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1, written by Jeff Lemire and Art by Alberto Ponticelli

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/files/2011/07/Frankenstein-Agent-of-SHADE-12.jpg?tti

Description: You familiar with Hellboy right? Monster guy, carries big guns, works for secret agency, has crazy adventures as he fights demons, nazis, and nazi demons? Yeah well, its like that, but with Frankenstein's Monster! I mean, just look at that cover for an idea; this s*** is gonna be wild as hell, Frankenstein with gatling guns fighting giant monsters with riding a flaming horse and saving the day. It aint your typical superhero book, and that's just why its so damn intriguing.

The Creative Team: Jeff Lemire is a relatively newcomer in the business, but he's been making waves with critically-acclaimed work on Superboy, Essex County Trilogy, Sweet Tooth, and Lost Dogs. He has a clear love and understanding of the medium, able to blaze new trails and mine new ideas in all of his work. With a high-concept idea like "Secret Agent Frankenstein", I'm eager to see what he does with it.

Alberto Ponticelli is most known for doing Unknown Soldier, which is most known for having semi-gritty, semi-fantastical visuals set in a hyperreal world of craziness. So yeah, the perfect artist!

Ease of Entry: Well, the book is gonna be weird, no doubt about that. You need to be ok with the idea of Frankenstein and his squad of monster hunters fighting titans on lost worlds.

Recommendation: If the above idea sounds awesome to you, hell yes! This is gonna be one of the freshest, wildest books on the market, and probably not one of their best-sellers, so get out there and support it for the sake of crazy comic book goodness.

here's the second half of B&R's write-up. TVotR wrote it:

Ease of Entry: Batman's one of the characters most of us are already familiar with and we're getting the original one here who is pretty much alike the man in the movies and the cartoons everyone's seen. On the flipside, his history isn't being totally rebooted like some of the superheroes in the "New 52" so there will probably be some references to past storylines (like the VERY EXISTENCE OF DAMIAN WAYNE) that might require reading to fully appreciate what will be happening in this book. Of course, there's nothing a short visit to Wikipedia can't address! And as I've already mentioned, this is the first time Bruce and his son Damian will actually be working as partners so it's gonna be a new adventure for both old comics readers and newbies.

I'd say there might be a little difficulty for first-time readers but it could be easily overcome with a little research.

Recommendation: Although I wouldn't say that this is a must-buy title, the solid creative team and just the idea of the obsessive brooding hardass that is Bruce Wayne Batman trying to be a good dad to his smug and sometimes savage son Damian who deep down just wants to prove himself worthy to his father make this interesting enough to check out. Or it could just be the Batman fanboy in me.

Batwoman, written by JH Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, with art by JH Williams III

Description: Batwoman, Kate Kane, is a great female character, despite being a fairly recent one, and this is her chance in the spotlight. Female characters can sometimes fall victim to gender stereotypes or just not get treated with respect. Sometimes they look like they’re trying too hard. Not Batwoman. Batwoman is interesting because she is a strong character who happens to be female. That isn’t to say that her character isn’t strongly defined around her gender, but what I’m getting at is that, despite the similar motifs, Batwoman isn’t just a “Girl Power!” version of Batman, she’s her own person with a completely separate story and cool personality. In summary, Kate Kane likes to kick ass and just happens to have lady parts. Oh, and she’s also a lesbian, and even that is handled tastefully. Kate Kane is awesome.

The Creative Team: And this is the part that seals the deal.

J.H. Williams III is a masterful artist. He has a unique art style that is just beautiful to look at. Even his panel shapes are dynamic and creative. And not just that, but he can change his style to suit different situations in the comic. His art for the Kate Kane segments of the story are grounded compared to the grit and flair of the style he uses when Kate is in costume. Action scenes are visually striking and brutal. When some more fantastic elements are involved, the art becomes downright surreal. And his spreads, holy crap. Words don’t do him justice.
external image
external image
external image

All of his pages are even better in-context, and in Elegy it’s beautiful to see his art mesh so perfectly with the story. Williams is one of THE best artists on an ongoing series, along with Francis Manapul.

As for the writing? Well. That’s another story. J.H. Williams III is an unknown in terms of writing ability. He hasn’t written anything, although he has worked on Batwoman before as an artist. And the other guy? The most I can find on him is that he’s written some Star Wars comics. That’s a very different game than Batcomics! No one really has any clue what to expect, but Batwoman is a solid character with a lot of potential, so hopefully it’ll turn out for the best. And there’s always DAT ART.

external image
external image

Accessibility: Here’s the catch. This ongoing series has been planned for about a year, well before even the writers knew about the relaunch. But the series kept getting delayed indefinitely, and now we know why. The creators have already gone on record as saying that they plan on continuing the character from where she left off. While there will be a recap for newcomers, I wouldn’t expect anything extensive, as the major details like her backstory, supporting cast, and main villain were already taken care of recently in Batwoman: Elegy. She is a recent character though, and doesn’t have much outside of that and 52 (although there were a LOT of other things going on there). If you do want a better background, pick up Elegy.

Recommendation: If you want a book with a strong female lead, or want to see how comics can excel as a visual medium, then this is the book for you. If you’re interested in Batman but not quite sold on the idea of a Batfamily, then Kate Kane could be the girl who could change your mind. And if you already wanted to explore the rest of Gotham’s cast? You were probably already sold! We might not have an answer on writing just yet, but the art is guaranteed to be some of the best in the market, and that and the character should carry the book. And if it’s on the same level as Elegy, we’re in for a treat.

Bleh. That's that. Had to cut out some of the artwork, but if we split it then we won't have that problem!

If you do include the rest of the art, one of them was a recap spread. I'm honestly not sure what we should do about that. On the one hand, it completely spoils Elegy, but it's also a very useful recap page and if they buy #1 then they'll see it anyways.

And of course the art I did include I picked just because I liked those the most! If you want to drop the Elegy pages in favor of more preview pages, that's fine. I just really love the Elegy art.
