All I really care about is that I enjoyed reading it. And still did when I read it for a 3rd time just now!
We've just had a 60 issue Justice League run which never went over mediocre. Before that were 2 amazing starts that resulted in some of the best books in DC history, that floundered to pretty much garbage after the original writer left. Literally the only time I have gotten excited about Astonishing since Whedon left (not counting Armor...existing anywhere, since every other book seems to not even acknowledge her) was when Wallflower appeared and I was like "Oh my god Wallflower is back" and then on the next page she EXPLODED INTO A MEAT MOUNTAIN.

Everybody pops off at the thought of Claremont/Byrne X-men, but I really feel he came into his own later, he grew as a writer, his stories got more interesting, more risk-taking. Most people really like the early Next Men books and are more critical of current Next Men book. I'm still undecided on the current run, but the last two issues have been pretty bad.

John Byrne, wrote and drew a lot of popular comic books in the 70-90s, including Claremont's X-men, writing AND drawing a legendary run on the Fantastic Four, rebooting Superman after COIE, Sensational She-Hulk that was doing 4th wall breaking Marvel style before Deadpool even existed, etc. He kinda fell off the boat in the 90s with Next Men and the whole industry falling apart and s***, but he did some very good comics with Gail Simone(JLA Classified, Action Comics, All-New Atom).

So Marvel just threw Millar/Hitch on the book, hoping their success from the Ultimates would work their magic on the series. Well it didn't! Hitch's artwork looks pretty damn rough after the first story arc, lots of bad characterization and stupid plot directions abound, wasn't very pretty. It just felt like Millar didn't have the strongest grasp on what makes these characters great, and the cover is a pretty clear indication of that.
