So guys, I just found out about this game. It's pretty awesome.
quick question: I was playing with a bunch of guys and one of the other heroes seemed to gain 3 extra levels faster then anyone else despite the fact nobody on our team was dying. I think it has to do with the jungle monsters.
How do you fight monsters in the jungle without losing Exp on the creep waves? Can only certain heroes do it?

Jungling doesn't really give much more EXP than anything else these days. EXP mostly depends on lane - solo top lane and mid lane should/will always be a higher level.
I think what masterplum means is that he was playing in a game that did NOT have a dedicated jungler. And so there was probably a champion who was solo who would duck into the jungle, pick up some minions and make it back to lane without wasting XP.
And doing this he managed to out level everyone?
And if this is the case then it's not something you have to worry too much about. In actual competitive play both teams should have someone who is full time jungler. This means the jungle isn't just going to be sitting around available for other people on their team to take for bonus XP.
Full time jungler? Like someone who thats all they do is jungle?

also, I was reading a guide that said that auto attacking creeps was bad, but I couldn't figure out how to turn off auto attack. is there a button somewhere or something?

But what you will find is the high level players are constantly using their right click to move their champion.
Constantly.
The "correct position" at which your champion stands is constantly in motion. Sometimes you need to twitch forwards, sometimes backwards, there is an "ideal" place to stand depending on your match up and about a dozen other factors which change every second.
Takes a lot of experience to get used to this. Usually the experience will be gained when you are too far forward and die. Then you think "oh hey, I guess I was too far forward that time for reason X". But eventually you learn.
But the idea is that you ONLY allow your champion to attack a minion when it will deal the final blow.
This prevents your wave from pushing too far forward too fast, which can actually be bad.
And so by proper last hitting you can get the last hit on every minion in the wave without pushing your lane further than it should be at that point.
Also do not feel bad when you play badly or simply have a bad game.
You are a new player and so it's going to happen.
But some people are naturally *** holes and so they are going to try and make you feel badly about it. Don't let it discourage you and just keep improving.
Oh and normally the lane assignments are like this:
a 1v1 is fought top. 1 champion per team. a 1v1 is fought mid, also 1 champion per team. a 2v2 is fought bottom. Usually a support + a physical carry.
And your 5th player starts in the jungle and stays in the jungle except when he's ganking/pushing lanes.
But most players at very low levels don't know how to jungle properly (takes practice to know where to start and how to do it). And not every champ can even jungle very effective. Some champions (like Skarner, WW, Rammus, Shaco) are very good and fast at clearing the jungle and they are able to get the same amount XP by killing jungle minions as they would have if they joined a lane.
I played with my hyper competitive Africa buddy (He's not African, we were both just in Africa together) and he said that I was pretty good, but I just don't have experience with the game yet.
Hope you don't mind these questions, next question I've thought of though; are there some champions who are inherently good and some that are bad? Like are there tier lists so I know that I shouldn't ever play as X?

There's a button that can force your champ to stop and just stand still, but that leaves you a sitting duck. just keep moving from side to side, and only attack the minion at the last instance, so you get the last hit.
And yes, full time jungler means that they are primarily in the jungle killing the monsters inside. They will come to the lanes to gank when the opportunity is there.

The tags on champions are relatively reliable, but they're not concrete.
Also, many of us highly recommend finding one or two champions who feel 'natural' to you and you're ok with (as in, you like their abilities and you don't think you suck horribly with them) and practice the game with them. There's a lot of knowledge in LoL about team composition, if champ A is shut down hard by champ B, and so on. It's tricky to learn and can't be done all at once, but if you know how one or two champions work and how they relate to the others, you'll have a solid foundation for the game and its mechanics.

stonewall008's youtube channel has all kinds of jungle information. It's not really necessary to know until you're level 30 and can have the runes and masteries to optimize your jungle, but he's a very knowledgeable dude

The best thing you can do as a person just starting out is learning the basics, like last hitting/farming and knowing when you're in danger. Champion wise, it is most helpful to pick a champion you like and play them almost exclusively until you know their ins and outs. by then, you'll get a good feel of the game and you'll be ready to branch out into other champions.

For AD carries (ranged auto attackers like Trist and Ashe), not missing a single last hit is even more important. The faster you can get your Best Friend sword, the better. It costs 1650, so it takes a while to get to. But it will make your damage output jump.
The only problem with learning one champion exclusively is that when they're restructured it can be difficult to adjust and then you feel like your foundation is gone. >_>

Also, don't be afraid to try PvP. Sometimes you'll get people who make new accounts to pubstomp and make themselves feel better, but you learn a lot more from PvP than from Coop vs AI. Most people your level are just as bad as you are!

Personally, I feel like it's a lot easier to learn fundamentals and assess your weak areas when you only focus on one character. Learning proper positioning in teamfights and ability usage is is easier if you learn one character and go from there. If you swap around characters every week, you have a completely different set of skills to learn.

Vayne is the same as she has always been. >_> She's always been considered a strong carry pick. BTW Graves is still a fairly strong carry pick as well. When people forget how to counter Caitlyn again, Vayne will get used less. That is totally a cycle.
I wish you could surrender before 20. When solo top and mid feed 8 kills in 10 minutes to Mordekaiser and Kassadin, I can kind of tell how the rest of the match will go.
No, it was a Nasus and Leblanc. I don't see many Ahris feeding anymore, actually. Usually the other way around. Now that people know how to use her better, she's become kind of ridiculous.
I'm really wanting to experiment with Karma jungle now. On paper it seems to have good potential; reasonable cooldowns, good damage, good sustain, and with the right teamcomp it can allow for insanely aggressive ganks.

This is what has always happened to Nasus vs. Morde, except when Morde was literally nerfed in half. Why are you surprised? There isn't a single Nasus who can win this alone. None.

This is basically what happens vs. Nasus, in fact. 'Morde got freefarm', except it's more like 'Morde got freefarm and kills', unless the jungler hugs top forever. Nasus never has won against Morde, is not winning against Morde now, and never WILL win against Morde. He is pure Siphoning Strike, and what do you know, shield means Morde takes zero damage from it!
Just tried out Xerath and oh my god he's overpowered. Our Galio went 0-4 in 6 minutes, DC'd, and then our team proceeded to faceroll the other team with ease. He does so much damage and it's so easy to hit people.
God being a good Karthus when you get fed/farmed in solo is so insane.
33 minute game 16/5/11 300~ CS(Actually not a big feat, if you have good early game farm as Karth it's almost impossible to fall behind) WOTA, Sorc Shoes, AA Staff, Deathcap, Void Staff, Abyssal Scepter all completed about 30 minutes in
