From a few episodes ago but:

Jessie teams up with Dude, and Conway teams up with a girl who is definitely not a creepy ghost.
external image
In fairness, she mind controls him before he can ask too many questions, but he still mistakes her for a member of Blue Team despite never having seen her before and the teams only having ten people each.

If there is an even number of students and one gets paired with a ghost, what happened to the student who is now without a partner?

The ghost girl hypnotized her and put her to sleep so that she wouldn't get in the way. I cut that out of the write-up because I couldn't find a way to make it funny.

Later, the heroes help out in the pokemon center instead of eating because Brock wants to impress Nurse Joy. He then has a creepy daydream where he falls in love with Nurse Joy, and apparently, her first name is "Nurse" because even when they're alone on the beach in his fantasy, he consistently calls her "Nurse Joy."

This...this would not surprise me at all.

Then, awesomely, completely inappropriate giant robot-esque theme music starts playing in the background as Team Rocket attacks the heroes with rocket punches and stuff.

That song is "Double Trouble" (sometimes mistitled "Team Rocket's Rockin"), the second-season-era Team Rocket-themed single from 2BA Master/Pikachu's Jukebox/Pokemon Puzzle League. Fitting for a retro Rocket episode, but I never paid enough attention to the song during the fight to notice if that was still Rachael Lillis and Eric Stuart on vocals.

It's because BW will have a filler saga. I'm expecting an RSE saga or something and a game announcement in the next two months.

That's why Ash is catching loads of Pokes, because he needs some team depth for the league - he won't be using his reserves, same as the Hoenn league. Which also had a filler saga. Pokemon is cyclical - gens 1, 3 and 5 are about "fresh starts", while 2 and 4 were about building on already-existing stuff, and the anime reflects that.

Consequently 2 and 4 had long, drawn-out sagas and 1, 3 and eventually 5 will be shorter, then followed with fillers.

Yeah, so? >_>

Unova is Hoenn done right. Using the same 6 Pokemon over and over again is dumb, the writers have learned from their mistakes, hey presto, now Ash has the right amount of depth in his team.

I'm calling it now - BW will be done by September, at which point RSE remake or Grey or whatever will come out in Japan. It'll be announced next month or maybe in April, and you can take that to the bank.

I'm expecting the filler arc to do with something about the other half of Unova, we'll probably know what by Grey.

In terms of catching pokemon he may get 1 or 2 before the league assuming the filler arc doesn't take place before the league and even then I wouldn't be surprised if his team stayed the same (except evolutions)

Playing The Leveling Field!
"Zo I gave it a lot of sott!"
Score: 6.5/10

The heroes come across Zoey battling a mystery trainer who is obviously Fantina. Zoey puts up a good fight, but she loses easily.

Ash asks what the deal with not being at her gym is, and Fantina eventually explains that she likes to win battles, and trainers beating her frustrated her, so she left to travel and become stronger. I mean, yes, okay, she puts a little nicer, but that’s basically the crux of what she says. “I dislike losing to people I am supposed to test the strength of by potentially losing to, so I left my job so that I could get worse at my job.” I also want to point out that she is traveling the world in a gown, high heels, and ballroom gloves.

Ash asks for a three-on-three battle, which Fantina agrees to. She pulls out a pokeball and Ash is astounded.
"Woah! She's holding a pokeball!"
I love this show.

Ash sends out Buizel and Fantina sends out Drifloom. Ash is surprised to see a Drifloom because Fantina only introduced herself as a ghost trainer. Drifloon eventually tags Buizel with hypnosis and knocks it out. Ash recalls it and lies, telling that it did great work.

Chimchar now. Drifloon hits it with will o' wisp, which of course affects the fire type Chimchar, and then hits it with hypnosis. Ash recalls Chimchar and sends out Pikachu.

Drifloon defeats Pikachu's volt tackle by slowing its charge with ominous wind, so Ash just has Pikachu use thunderbolt. Unfortunately, this causes Drifloon to evolve, and now Fantina has a Drifblim. The pokedex tells us that its movements are unpredictable because it travels on wind currents, even though that should make its movements literally more predictable than any other pokemon in the world, ever. Its weird movements allow it to dodge Pikachu's attacks, and it delivers a hypnosis that puts Pikachu to sleep.

Ash concedes the battle, and asks for another battle some time, and Fantina returns to her gym to train for a while even though she just spent the episode saying that she’s traveling to train instead of staying at the gym.
external image

Jessie takes a video of the battle and commands Yanmega to learn how to dodge like a Drifblim because I don’t know. I’m only mentioning this because I don’t know if it will be important later.

Doc Brock!
"I'm chipped out of my everloving tummy."
Score: 2/10

The heroes are in a cabin in a forest on top of a mountain. How did they get a cabin? Well, shut up. Dawn is training with Buneary, and Ash is trying to think of a counter to Fantina's hypnosis, only to fall asleep. Brock starts to leave when Ash asks where he's going. Confused, Brock says he that thought he told Ash earlier, so Dawn explains that Brock is going to a pharmacy at the bottom of the mountain. Are you wondering what the point of Brock’s thinking he told Ash was? So am I. Brock tells Ash and Dawn to stay at the cabin and take care of all of his pokemon while he goes alone because... uh.

Uh.

Brock leaves some instructions for Ash and Dawn. They are to give all of the pokemon a shower. The pokemon are all excited about this, even Chimchar... except Buizel. At one point, Ash accidentally uses cold water instead of hot water before apologizing. Pachirisu doesn’t even like shock him or something, it just gets a little cold for a few seconds.

Next up is lunch. Dawn offers to cook, and Pikachu wants to help. Piplup wants to help too, but Dawn arbitrarily only accepts Pikachu's help. She cooks some pancakes, and everyone likes them. Meanwhile, Team Rocket has some chips for lunch.

Ash wonders how he can beat Fantina and falls asleep. Pikachu shows up and says Pachirisu has a fever, so Ash and Dawn quickly give Pachirisu to Staravia to fly to a pokemon cenno they don't they decide the nearest pokemon center is too far away. Ash's solution is to go find Brock, so he faces Gliscor and tells Staravia to go find Brock.

They decide they need to get Pachirisu's fever down, so they wrap it in conveniently-sized blankets and plop a bag of ice on its head. Dawn blames Ash for giving it the fever by showering it with cold water, and Ash blames her for bad pancakes (even though everyone loved the pancakes and no one else got sick).

Meanwhile, Team Rocket sees a Zapdos. Well huh. They fire a projectile glue gun at it, but it misses and hits Staravia by accident. They decide to give up on Zapdos and go after Staravia (?!?!?), but it escapes and lands by a river. It can’t remove the glue, and thus can’t fly. By the way, there is no explanation for this Zapdos. None at all.

Ash and Dawn decide an oran berry might help, so they go out to look for one. They fail to find any, so Ash decides to send out Gliscor to search for Staravia. It quickly locates Brock (no, there were no typos there).

Gliscor explains that there's some sort of trouble, so Brock declares that they must rush home. Yes, he specifically says "home." Unfortunately, Gliscor can't run very fast and Brock can't carry it, so he tells he'll go ahead and it can follow later. Don’t worry, though. Gliscor won’t appear for the rest of the episode.

Meanwhile, Dawn wonders if feeding Pachirisu fruit will make it feel better because her mom once fed her fruit when she was sick. It won't eat, but Brock then arrives. He feels Pachirisu's forehead, and declares that it has an electricity build-up, like Pikachu had a gazillion episodes ago. So he takes a... electricity thingy that removes electricity from your body (?!?) and gives it some medicine. He then tells Ash and Dawn to stay calm, and pokemon will stay calm too. Brock explains that oran berries don't grow around here, they grow over there. You know, like twelve feet away. They grab a berry and return to Pachirisu. Meanwhile, some Wooper find Staravia and it asks them to wash the glue off of its wing, and they do.

Meanwhile meanwhile, Team Rocket sees the heroes' cabin. Pachirisu's fever is gone, and it’s now completely fine. Team Rocket steals only Pachirisu. Staravia appears, even though it should have thought Brock was still at the pharmacy, and saves Pachirisu. Buneary and Pachirisu blast them off. Brock tells Ash and Dawn to learn first aid for the future.

This episode is literally

literally

Like if Capcom made a Megaman game, only instead of Doctor Wily and robots and whatever, nothing happens. You’re just taking care of Doctor Light’s house. Gotta take out the trash, wash the dishes, and the final level is trying to assemble a piece of furniture from IKEA.

That is this episode.

Battling The Generation Gap!
"Now just smile and pose!"
Score: 6/10

We see Joanna, Dawn's mom, with her Glameow, losing a contest battle to Lila, some girl, with her Delcatty. Both are children, so this takes place about twenty years before the show is set. Hey Joanna, how's the Reagan era working out for you?

Cut to Dawn talking to her mom over the videophone. Dawn can't believe that her mom once fought Lila, the "top pokestylist." Unfortunately, Lila retired soon after, so Joanna never got a rematch. AND THE HEROES JUST HAPPEN TO BE CELESTIC TOWN FOR A CONTEST BATTLE, THE TOWN IN WHICH LILA LIVES AND WORKS.

Ash leaves Brock and Dawn to train by himself while they go to Lila's store. Good call, Ash. I once had to take my sister to Forever 21, and I'm still recovering. I can't even imagine taking her to a store that specializes in expensive clothing for teenagers' pets. Unfortunately, Dawn learns that Lila is out, and disappointed, goes to the contest instead.

At the pokemon contest, Ash and Brock assemble while Dawn prepares herself and Buneary when who should appear but Lila!
external image
She fixes Dawn's hair there, and she quickly identifies Dawn as... Dawn. Lila's lackey tells her that there's no time to rape little girls and drags her off.

The first coordinator is none other than Lila. Wow, who saw that one coming?

Lila sends out a Cherrim (with the emphasis on the second syllable instead of the first). She does well. Jessie shows up, of course, dressed as Fantina and imitating her accent because… because. She has Yanmega launch her into the air and keep her there with silver wind. Everyone hates it. Next is Dawn, specifically introduced as "the Wallace Cup Champion." Remember the time a CotD recognized Ash as the tag battle winner but not Dawn?

After the performance, Dawn sees Lila talking to her mom over the videophone. Lila tells Dawn that after she beat Joanna, she had the chance to study to be a pokestylist abroad. She asked Joanna for advice, who told her to become a stylist. ... So Joanna strategically removed her biggest competition and then, with no one to challenge her, rose to become a top coordinator. This is now canon.

Lila decided to enter this contest specifically to fight Dawn, because she already owns four ribbons and if she beats Dawn, she'll have fi-- wait. Ribbons that are twenty years old are still valid? There's no expiration date on those things?

Round 2 will consist of Dawn, Lila, and who cares. And hey Lila and Dawn are on opposite sides of the bracket so they'll have to be in the finals together. Amazingly, Lila and Dawn defeat their unnamed competition, and they reach the final round in literally five or six seconds of still shots.

Lila sends out a Delcatty. The episode doesn't say it's the same Delcatty she beat Joanna with, but if it was, it would be like twenty years old at least, and we know pokemon age (remember the really old surfing Pikachu?), so since this Delcatty is still young, I choose to believe Lila's original Delcatty died when it got out at night and coyotes got it.

Ambipom does not do well against Delcatty, and even when it hits Delcatty, it gets get afflicted with cute charm because-- wait, Delcatty is male?
external image
Delcatty puts its enemy to sleep with sing, and Dawn loses a ton of points while Delcatty wails on Ambipom. It scores a hit on Delcatty and gets attracted again, so Dawn is forced to just have it try to attack anyway. Fortunately, it works.

We get into a swift versus... something attack, and Dawn manages a very impressive attack just as time runs out, which leaves her with slightly more points when time runs out. Dawn celebrates her third ribbon, and Lila offers each of the heroes a free piece of clothing from her shop each as reward for beating her.

So Joanna strategically removed her biggest competition and then, with no one to challenge her, rose to become a top coordinator. This is now canon.

Sounds like Joanna just might be the most competent character in the entire series.

Also, Ambipom is female?

Losing Its Lustrous!
"Nurse Joy, can't you see you're my Lustrous Orb?"
Score: 6/10

The Eterna City police are transporting the Adamant Orb to Celestic Town’s research center (in which the Lustrous Orb is kept for research purposes) when Commander Saturn of Team Galactic attacks. Five Golbats and a Toxicroak is too much for professional police officers to handle, and the orb is lost.

Cut to the heroes. To fight Fantina, Ash is training his pokemon to spin while attacking, so they can attack while dodging sleep attacks. The heroes soon see a news report about Team Galactic stealing the Adamant Orb, and hear about Cynthia being here, and that her grandmother, Carolina, runs the research center, so they decide to go to the center. They find her immediately (that was easy), and enter the center with her. Watching this, Saturn recognizes the heroes and worries that they might cause problems in their big to steal the Lustrous Orb.

Cyrus appears, and Cynthia recognizes him as a respected and well known dude involved everything from corporations to library construction to mythology expertise (?!) and invites him to come along.

Carolina takes everyone on a tour of the research center, and shows them an ancient tablet that shows the legendary gnomethings. Dawn and Ash say they've seen Mesprit and Azelf, and everyone believes them. Hey, remember when Ash claimed to see Ho-Oh and Professor Oak was like "shut up no you didn't?" Well, okay, granted, Ash once saved the world from rampaging Legendary Birds on live TV, but no one ever references that so I still think this it dumb. Ash and Dawn relate the times they saw Azelf and Mesprit at Lake Valor and Lake Verity, and Cynthia explains that they're the Lake Guardians, and the final one, Uxie, lives in Lake Acuity near Snowpoint City.

The tablet has a gold circle in the center, and Cynthia explains that it means either the Adamant or Lustrous Orb, but no one knows which. Cyrus suggests that they show the heroes the Lustrous Orb because the heroes have seen the Lake Guardians before, which doesn't make sense but we cut to Team Galactic placing explosives around the center so I guess ignore that. Officer Jenny takes the heroes, Cynthia, Carolina, and the obviously trustworthy Cyrus to the Lustrous Orb.

Ash and Dawn examine the orb, but admit that nothing happens. Cyrus declares that this is impossible and gets angry, but Carollina calms him. He explains that the Lustrous Orb is related to the "beginning of time," and he's an expert in the field of "the beginning of time and our world." He freaks out and talks about how Sinnoh originated with Mount Coronet, about how there used to be no war and just paradise, and how terrible war is and how the difference between war and battle while acting crazy, and no one thinks this is odd.

Finally, when Cyrus starts ranting about miracles,

Team Galactic activates the explosives and his insane rant that no one thinks is weird is ended. Carolina tries to activate the security around the orb, only to learn the computers are compromised somehow. Cynthia declares that the orb must be moved, so she enlists the heroes, Officer Jenny, Cyrus, and Team Rocket (disguised as two random cops) to help.

Everyone run into Saturn, who demands the orb. Surprisingly, the heroes refuse. Saturn has Bronzor use hypnosis, and luckily, Pikachu just happens to have trained against this very th-- oh Cynthia just sends out Garchomp to kill Saturn's pokemon in one second. Huh. Someone acted completely logically. Well alright then.

Cynthia tells Officer Jenny to run away with the orb, but the only exit is blocked by another Team Galactic member, Redhead Chick. The episode ends with a To Be Continued as Redhead Chick menaces the heroes.

Double Team Turnover!
"I really don't like showing off, but I guess I have no choice. The burden of great power."
Score: 4/10

Cynthia sends out her deadliest pokemon to join Garchomp in defending the Lustrous Orb from these fanatics: the mighty Gastrodon. It easily defeats the five quadrillion Golbat Team Galactic send out, so Saturn says he must now get serious (though not in so many words). Don't worry, though, Cynthia. Your Garchomp has Chimchar and Pachirisu backing it up (no seriously, those are what the heroes send out).

Redhead Chick sends out Purugly and Saturn sends forth Toxicroak. A big battle breaks out, in which Chimchar and Croagunk are injured and Team Rocket escapes with the orb, while Team Galactic just escapes in general.

Ash wants to chase after them, but Cynthia says that Chimchar and Croagunk are too injured. Well, yes, this is true. But it's also true that you could just put them in their pokeballs and continue chasing Team Galactic, or give them to a random cop and tell him to go to the pokemon center, or-- oh screw it. Instead, they just send Staravia and Garchomp to chase down the orb.

Another part of Team Galactic, led by Purplehair Girl (later named “Jupiter”), uses the Spear Key (remember it?) to track Team Rocket. Don’t worry, though. This isn’t actually important, because she just has a Golbat find them anyway.

At the pokemon center, Ash apologizes to Chimchar, and explains to Cynthia that this was Paul's Chimchar. She compliments it, and tells it to watch over both Ash and Paul in the future, since, because “when every life meets another life, something will be born,” when Ash, Paul, and Chimchar all met, something was/will be born. This is important I guess. Dawn and Ash wonder what Team Galactic is after, and Brock eventually realizes they're probably after Dialga and Palkia, and Cynthia agrees.
