Ash asks for a gym battle, but Byron’s assistant tells that he can't have a battle because Byron's son is visiting. Because the two of them are having private family time, Byron’s assistant of course takes the heroes to him immediately, where they see Roark.

Roark is happy to see Ash, but he tells him that he can't have a battle because he and Byron, his father, are having an argument about who loves fossils more. I sincerely hope that somewhere, right now, there are two archeologists having this same argument.


Eventually, Byron takes everyone to his fossil collection room, whereupon Dawn declares that Byron "sure has a lot of stones." Pokemon, ladies and gentlemen: completely appropriate for your small children to watch.

Even Roark is impressed by an unusually large Anorith fossil Byron's found, and they then begin talking about how large Byron's stones are oh my God this episode. Finally, Roark and Byron argue about who has the best pokemon restored from a fossil, because that’s definitely something that scientists can objectively measure. Eventually they agree to a battle. Roark explains Byron's backstory: Byron led the Oreburgh Gym until he found out the Canalade Gym was empty, and it was a perfect excuse to go there because there were so many fossils. Roark's flashback can only be described as hilarious.
"Dad! What about the Oreburgh Gym?"
"I'm leaving this gym up to you. See ya 'round!"
Then Byron runs off, presumably keeping up his fast-paced sprint the many, many, many miles between the two cities. Because of Byron not considering his family first, Roark is very annoyed, and the heroes realize that Byron's "special training" was probably just digging up more fossils. Roark tells Ash that he's sorry for delaying him, but he can't let Bryon "out-fossil me." I don't know what to tell you, Roark. One of you is willing to abandon his family and friends in the pursuit of fossils and the other isn't. I'd say he has the advantage.

Roark's Rampardos versus Byron's Bastidon. Amazingly, Roark's strategy of "attack a lot by running in a straight line" fails, but he doesn’t technically lose because the battle is called when Team Rocket attacks and steals the Anorith fossil from Byron's fossil room. Byron hates Team Rocket for stealing his fossil, but compliments their hole-digging skills and goes to chase them because he wants to learn their hole-digging secrets and not because they stole his property.

Rampardos and Bastiodon go to battle Team Rocket's robot, but becasue Roark is a dumbass, his Rampardos is nearly knocked out. It's only because Bastiodon that Rampardos is able to spam its head smash and defeat Team Rocket’s robot. Eventually, blastingoffaaagain when Ash-- "aims for the hole."

The fossils fall about eighty feet from the air as the robot blasts off, but don’t worry: they’re literally millions of years old and completely fine. Byron reveals one of his favorite fossils: a Sunkern. Roark has a flashback to when he was a little kid, and found a Sunkern fossil and gave it to Byron. Byron explains that he left because that would force Roark to step up and become a proper gym leader, and the heroes all decide to call their parents and say hi.

DEALING WITH DEFENSIVE TYPES!

The episode begins with a recap, and Byron yells out "I love fossils!" Even though, from the heroes' perspective, no recap is necessary and they already know that Byron loves fossils, so, to them, there's no reason for him to yell this except that he's a dangerous lunatic.

Byron sends out Bronzor, so Ash decides that a fire type is his best option against a steel-type. Huh. That's disappointly logical. Bronzor tanks Chimchar's fire attacks, and Brock explains that it has heatproof. Haha, what kind of dumbass doesn't use a Bronzong with levitate? Bronzor then uses rain dance, which weakens fire attacks. Huh. What a clever way to weaken fire pokemon and improve water pokemon in your gym with two rock pokemon. Granted, your pokemon are all weak to fire, but still. Ash has Chimchar use dig, and rain dance ends in apparently exactly one turn. Ultimately, the two collide with different attacks, and while Bronzor is knocked out, Chimchar is left too weak to continue, so Ash recalls it.

Byron sends out Steelix because what other iconic steel pokemon are there, I guess. Ash counters with Buizel. Brock says that Ash has the advantage, and Byron's assistant (who's watching, since Roark is the referee for this match) berates him, saying that type advantages don't always determine winners. Well, okay, yes, but that doesn't make Brock wrong. What does make Brock wrong is when Buizel's water gun is stopped by a screech (because that makes sense), and Steelix easily knocks it out.

Ash sends out Chimchar, which eventually defeats Steelix by tunneling underground and weakening the soil so it’s knocked off balance. This would make sense if other pokemon hadn’t used dig five billion times before and this not happened, ever.

Finally, Byron sends out Bastiodon. Ash choose to not recall Chimchar, and uses the extremely clever "use a head-on attack against a pokemon that is explicitly known for its high defenses while not attempting anything in the way of defense or trickery, while you are already heavily damaged" strategy. Amazingly, this fails.

Ash sends out Gliscor. Brock: "This is Gliscor's first battle, so we should expect great things." Even though Gliscor did in fact battle Paul as a Gligar, and why would you expect someone untested and unexperienced to do well, but whatever. Byron starts the battle by kicking Ash's ass, so of course Gliscor manages to get behind Bastiodon and use fire fang. Ash Ketchum: Sneak attacking weak spots like the hero he is. Ash finally decides that the next attack will decide everything, so he has Gliscor use X-Scissor, because nothing is a better than a bug move on a steel/rock type. After some reused animation, Ash has Gliscor use sand attack to blind Bastiodon and fire fang while it can't see (so no, the “next attack decides it all” thing did not turn out to be correct).

Ash gets the badge, and all of the pokemon he used in the battle pose with him... and Pikachu. Uh, okay. Good for you, Pikachu, you... watcher, you.

Still pretty bad, especially since this Bronzor had heatproof, and thus only Steelix was actually weak to fire (and then, it's still weak to water).

Anyway, there needs to hurry up and be another Ash/Trip battle soon. We haven't had one since before the Club Battle tournament. It looks like a new mini-tournament is starting in a couple weeks, so maybe they'll fight then. But if it's anything like the last battle, it'll just be 1v1, which really isn't the same thing as a full 3v3 - 6v6 battle.

The heroes want to go to Chocovine Town for a contest, but unfortunately, the boats off of this island aren't running. A guy explains that several Wailord (that the heroes are literally three hundred feet from and could have easily seen them on their own) are blocking the harbor and stopping boats from leaving. All of the adults are just like "Man, those Wailord. What a headache." You know, Los Angeles isn't really known for its super busy harbor (we're better known for our six lane freeways that still move fifteen miles an hour), but if the LA harbor shut down for a day things would be a nightmare, and this is an island city that considers its habor being shut down a “headache.”

Even though the heroes literally get involved in every unusual event they are within ten miles of, no matter where they are or what it is, they're like "Yeah, this is a minor inconvenience. Rather than solve the problem like we always do, let’s just go have lunch." There, a Luxio steals their food, but don't worry, Piplup is on the case! It's immediately knocked out. Pikachu chases Luxio down, but Luxio throws the food to some other wild pokemon before escaping itself.


Everyone decides to chase the pokemon on foot evn though they could easily just send Staravia or something. Team Rocket attacks in a... I don't even know, tractor robot (I'm not willing to figure out what's going on here), so Ash and the wild pokemon jump into a sewer entrance to escape. Team Rocket accidentally bends the manhole cover in place before blasting off, so Ash and Pikachu can't escape the suspiciously well-lit sewer. Everyone is like "Oh no, this manhole cover is too bent to move," even though they frequently use pokemon to blow up ceilings and this cover should take like one second to destroy. Ash decides instead to search for another way out instead of having his friends call the police and let them get him out. By the way, the people of Canalave City apparently poop and pee only water.


Ash accidentally runs into the wild pokemon again and follows them to a Wailmer that's been beached... in a sewer. See, it got into the sewer and somehow ended up on the concrete walking area meant for humans, so the pokemon are feeding it stolen food because they have nothing better to do, I guess. The pokemon and Ash work together to push the Wailmer into the water, but no matter what they do (Ash doesn't bring out his other pokemon), they can't move Wailmer. By the way, I checked, and Wailmer weighs 283 pounds. Now, okay, that's more than Ash should be able to easily move, since he's ten, but come on, a ten year-old and several animals could definitely move three hundred pounds if they had to. At the very least, a ten year-old boy could very slowly push that weight over the course of minutes.

Well, Ash decides that if Wailmer is wet, it might feel better, so Buizel uses water gun on it, which causes it to instantly be better and jump into the sewer water on its own. Eventually, Ash figures out that this Wailmer belongs to the Wailord in the harbor, so the wild pokemon and Ash lead Wailmer out of the sewer.

Meanwhile, Brock and Dawn try to open the sewer manhole even though they know Ash has left. Happiny can't do it, so Dawn sends out Murderswine because it’s not like it’s tried to murder her in the past, what’s the worst that could happen? Murderswine ignores her until she offers it food, whereupon it immediately opens the cover, throws her into the air so high that if Happiny hadn’t caught her she’d have died, and eats the food. They then follow Piplup into the sewers, because nothing has a better sense of direction than a penguin in a warm, underground environment.

The wild pokemon lead Ash and Pikachu to a huge group of wild pokemon living in a community here (Rattata, Mothim, Spheal, etc), and Ash is impressed with how well the pokemon are working together and by how negligent in their duties the sewer maintenance staff must be.

Anyway, there's a problem with Wailmer: to get back to the ocean, it needs to get up a small waterfall built into the sewer's design. Ash's solution? Use a rope to pull Wailmer up the waterfall. Yes. Even though Ash and the pokemon couldn't move Wailmer even one inch by pushing it, they intend to pull it up using a rope. And of course it works perfectly. Fortunately for the writers, they can just create another, larger waterfall.


Ash has all of the pokemon build an ice slide and a raft to knock up it, and thanks all of the pokemon for their help (by the way, the Venonat here do nothing). Unfortunately, the ice slide breaks apart because of Wailmer's sheer weight, but the other pokemon knock it the remaining distance by jumping up and using iron tail and tackle. Even though Wailmer was too heavy to move earlier.

Brock and Dawn find Ash (Piplup stumbles upon him by pure accident), but unfortunately, there's four minutes left in the episode, so a Swampert randomly appears and tells the heroes they can't go further through the medium of mud shot. Remembering the basics of Ethos-Pathos-Logos, Ash launches a counterargument of Ethos (“I have a Grotyle, and therefore, you should trust me”), which easily defeats the Swampert which they then do not attempt to catch or restrain in any way.

As Wailmer leaves to go into the harbor, it evolves for no reason... which prevents it from moving under a drawbridge. Seriously? Seriously. The heroes burst into the control room rather than finding an adult, and since they don't have a key to activate the mechanism, they have the electric pokemon shock the computers until they work. I like to this of the traffic system they are completely upsetting by this action and causing hours of disruption for anyone in a car. Anyway, Swampert appears again, hoping to attack Wailord because… well, because, and this time limit means the drawbridge won't lift in time. The other sewer pokemon appear and rush to the electric pokemons’ aid, and somehow this makes the drawbridge raise faster. No, it's not like they do anything, they just... bite Pachirisu's tail? And that works? I don't... I literally do not know what's going on here. I literally don’t understand how you work, Japan.

The drawbridge opens and Wailord escapes, causing a small wave that knocks Swampert away. The Wailord thank the heroes by summoning a rainbow (I don’t know), and everyone leaves.

This episode is ass. I like how they tried to give Ash a series of obstacles to overcome to help Wailord, I really do, but everything other than concept is ass, including the obstacles themselves and how they are presented.
