A whole lot of plot.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. No comment on the heroes correctly following Cresselia's trail when Fathead does his thing and points them in the wrong direction like he's so sure he knows what he's talking about only to be wrong when they discover it's the trail of a different pokémon? I could swear that happened in this episode...

I originally mentioned it, but then, to my great disappointment, I researched how good the sense of smell penguins have is and learned that Piplup's weak sense of smell is actually accurate to real life, so I had to let it go.

You do research on penguins, so you can have the correct facts for something that happens in the episode.
But you can't look up how to correctly write some city names?

How dare you apply real-life biology to children's fictional characters!? It's like you're trying to find excuses for Fathead to seem more bearable than he actually is but you can't fool me. It's not the fact that he found a false trail with his questionable sense of smell, it's that he was so sure his false trail was correct like he could do no wrong... BUT HE DID DO WRONG! He lead the heroes astray even if only for a brief instant.

Pure evil...

GET YOUR ROTOM RUNNING!
"How do you upset a lawnmower?"
Score: 3/10

That sounds like the opening to a bad joke.

Professor Oak tells the heroes that since they’re at Catalave City, they should visit the Old Chateau and eat some gato (a type of food I guess?), so they agree to do it after Piloswine is done raping everyone.
external image

Alright, time to rate the new opening song. It's pretty good! It's no I Wanna Be The Very Best, but I can work with it! I do love the line "If you follow your heart, you can't be wrong," because people who follow their hearts are in fact frequently wrong.

To cut the details short, the heroes arrive, learn that the power is out and being repaired, so the place is closed, enter the building anyway, accidentally turn the power back on when they hit a generator, and when an automated announcement kicks in, which mentions that you can make your own gato if you want, the heroes think this is great, and want to do it, even though this is clearly illegal and they are obviously breaking and entering. Brock pretty much just agrees to do all of the work while Ash and Dawn train their pokemon. Ash tells Pikachu to "scrimmage with Chimchar," thus winning the bet of the two translators who argued whether or not you could logically insert the word "scrimmage" into a show meant for ten year-olds.

During the training, Chimchar hits a lawnmower, but Rotom possesses it and chases Ash and his pokemon back into the Chateau. Shortly afterward, Dawn turns a fan off and starts training indoors. Then the fan starts chasing her, so she runs out of the room screaming "I'm sure I turned that fan off?!" even though whether or not the fan is on should be the least of her issues with what is happening right now. Ash and Dawn meet up and decide to warn Brock, but Rotom keeps chasing them by possessing stuff. Even though they could easily defeat a single ghost pokemon, they choose to run around like idiots. They finally reach Brock, who expresses doubt that they've seen a ghost. Even though Ash literally fought a ghost pokemon trainer a few episodes ago. Brock only believes them when Rotom possesses a fridge. Finally the heroes decide to just attack it, so it leaves the fridge and possesses a lawnmower to continue attacking, and the heroes-- run away again. WHY? JUST PUNCH IT. JUTS PUNCH IT IN ITS STUPID FACE. WHAT CAN IT DO ABOUT IT, IT’S A STUPID ROTOM. Eventually they just knock it out, and because they have an extremely rare ghost pokemon knocked out in front of them, the heroes do not catch it. It explains that it just wanted to freak out some humans because that’s how it gets its kicks, shocks them, and leaves, and the heroes all think this is hilarious as they chow down on Brock’s food.

I hate the person who wrote this episode. Right now, in Japan, is a man who does not realize that I hate him.

A BREED STAMPEDE!
"Behave, or I'll have to spank you!"
Score: 5/10

Kinky, Jessie. Kinky.

The heroes are watching TV. Seems Kenny and Nando, important enough to be mentioned but not important enough to actually get more episodes right now, have each won a ribbon. There's also a contest coming up in... I can't hear the name properly. It sounds like "Tacovine City," so that's what I'm going to call it. Dawn declares that she'll use Piloswine in the known for its Taco Bells and poor gardeners.

Dawn sends out Piloswine to train, but unfortunately, it won't listen to her orders. Guess that's what happens when you level your pokemon too high and don't get any gym badges, you… contest person. Piloswine instead digs a hole, so Pikachu offers to jump in and search for it. Dawn thanks it, but Piplup declares that IT will do it instead and jumps down without waiting for Dawn's permission. Haha, fathead.

Dawn does eventually gets Piloswine's attention when she feeds it, but when she runs out of food, it tries to attack her. Gliscor offers to help, so Ash sends out Grotle.
external image
Amazingly, sending out a pokemon that's weak to ice attacks against an ice pokemon fails, so Ash sends out Gliscor after all. Despite Gliscor being x4 weak to ice attacks, it fares better because it knows fire fang, but it still doesn’t do well enough to protect Piplup from getting trampled by accident. Finally, Brock just tells Happiny to handle it, and it does. Wow, that was easy. When Piloswine calms down, everyone chastises it for not listening to orders, rather than for trying to murder them. Also Gliscor knows fire fang.

After some padding, in which we learn Piloswine knows ancient power, it just runs away when it smells Team Rocket making lunch like a mile away. James mentions the "Team Rocket Academy," so, the answer is yes. You need specialized training, the kind you can only get at an academy, to join the mafia. Who knew? Piloswine blasts Team Rocket off and steals their food. By the way, the heroes don't see that it's Team Rocket who blast off, so as far as they know, Piloswine just murdered innocent people to steal their lunch. And they still only care about the not following orders.
“Dammit, Piloswine! How many times have I told you?! You need to dig the shallow graves first, that saves time later on!”

Dawn worries about her pokemon not listening to her, and Ash comforts her by not bringing up the time his Charizard didn't obey him for like fifty episodes straight. That's a hell of a longer arc than anything you'll experience, you secondary protagonist, you.

Team Rocket, wanting revenge, puts up a poster for a Pokemon Friendship School, which lets you get closer to your pokemon. The heroes go to the circus tent Team Rocket has apparently set up (?), and each sends out a pokemon to go through the Friendship Obstacle Course together. Piloswine only agrees because Dawn offers it food, even though the last time she did that, it attempted to murder her.

One of the challenges is to follow James' lead and move your limbs in whatever way he does, along with your pokemon. For example, holding a hand above your head and another to your right. Do you see the problem here? Do you? The writers didn't. I mean, Piloswine doesn't do the exercise, but still. Well, Team Rocket finally just steals all of the pokemon.
external image

Pachirisu upsets Piloswine in the cage, so it freaks out and brings the balloon to the ground by accident, so Team Rocket punishes it by attacking it. This freaks Piloswine out so much that it evolves again. Mamoswine is now too big to fit in the cage and easily breaks it (instead of, like, crushing all of the small pokemon around it into bloody chunks as it presses them against the bars). Mamoswine is all but immune to Team Rocket's attacks and easily blasts them off. Mamoswine then freaks out for literally no reason at all and tries to brutally gore the heroes to death (not a joke or an exaggeration), so Dawn finally just recalls it into its pokeball.

At the pokemon center, Nurse Joy informs Ash that Byron, the gym leader, has just gotten back to town, and he’s excited to hear that, at least temporarily, the Dawn-centric episodes will stop.

Okay, so seriously. Seriously. You’re doing a retread of the “big and powerful pokemon won’t obey the hero” thing? I mean… can’t you at least do it with something that isn’t also significantly more powerful than anything else the hero has? Can’t you do it with like a tiny pokemon just lazing off by itself, or something, that isn’t just a blatant retread of Charizard?

Eh, ah well. Mediocre episode is mediocre.

That sounds like the opening to a bad joke.

Professor Oak tells the heroes that since they’re at Catalave City, they should visit the Old Chateau and eat some gato (a type of food I guess?), so they agree to do it after Piloswine is done raping everyone.

It's spelled "gateau", and it's the French word for chocolate. The Old Gateau is actually a usable item in the game, found in the Old Chateau, and it's functionally identical to a Full Heal, except there's only one in the entire game.

"Gato", on the other hand, is Spanish for "cat".

No note of how Brock faked out the Rotom? It kept only possessing the fridge when Brock turned his back, and then he varied his rhythm so that it would be going back into the fridge right as he turned. Because Brock is more genre savvy than the others.

Ash's countershield is just using an existing move in an unusual way. I suppose Ash's old question there could imply that there are improvised, illegal moves, but I expect by this point they silently retconned that to basically anything a pokemon can do is a move, except for a few really specific things like that one Skuntank spraying smelly stuff that wasn't technically a move.

Thunde Armor though, came right out of nowhere, was never used again and was not even logical in its set-up or execution

Besides, Pikachu riding on another Pokemon's back has been done multiple times, and color filters aren't as awesome as they think they are. There's nothing going on during the Electric Armor that the viewer will find especially cool, aside from winning a battle that seemed out of reach beforehand.

With the Countershield, we get to see Buizel breakdance. Enough said.
