Barry is training with his Empoleon and Heracross when the former freaks out and attacks him. He goes to Nurse Joy, who informs him that Iron Island’s steel pokemon are all freaking out from intense pain and attacking people randomly.

Barry does the only logical thing possible: he calls the heroes. Weirdly, at first he’s chatty and friendly, then he's suddenly like "oh yeah and something's wrong with my Empoleon and the entire island is in danger." The heroes agree to come over and help Barry solve the mystery because even they, fifth grade drop-outs that they are, know not to leave something of this importance to Officer Jenny. She doesn’t even own a gun.

They take the ferry and quickly arrive. Wow, that was easy. Unfortunately, Barry didn't wait for them and has already gone off on his own because… well, he’s impatient, I guess. Or something. They go to find him, but quickly come across several rampaging steel pokemon that can’t be calmed no matter how much Ash stands in one place and yells while they charge at him.

Ash is almost killed, but, unfortunately, an Aura Guardian named Riley appears with a Lucario and saves him. Riley specializes in steel pokemon, and is investigating what's going on; his Lucario isn't affected by whatever is happening because of its Aura. You would think Ash would mention that he’s actually one of the few remaining users of Aura, and has has a lot of experience with this type of thing in the past. Nope.

Riley has found there's a low frequency radio wave that's affecting steel pokemon, and he hasn’t bothered telling the police because… well, because. He tells the heroes to go back to town, but Ash insists on coming because he's the main character, and Riley eventually relents.

Meanwhile, Barry runs into Team Rocket, and they all find a huge machine that’s being run by Team Galactic. The four of them attack together, and even though Barry was portrayed as relatively competent (he wasn't completely crushed by Ash), they're easily defeated by Team Galactic before being thrown into some ruins in a pit. The machine, we see, is excavating large Dialga/Palkia ruins, and the ruins are made of a “metal-like substance” that emits radio waves that freak out steel pokemon (perfectly logical). The ruins send a laser blast into the sky that has the side effect of ruining Lucario's Aura, and the episode ends with a To Be Continued.

The only difference I remember between them is one used a Purugly, one used a Skuntank, and one used a Toxicroak.

Also the first battle with Mars' Purugly could be a b**** if you didn't have a Fighting or Rock Pokemon.

Well, I remember Archie and Maxie, but Tabitha and whatever Aqua's admin's name was are completely forgettable. Other than I think Tabitha is a guy?

Not really the same, since you don't fight them. It was actually a bit of a disappointment post-game when all you had to do was find them and they'd basically give up. Having six more boss fights would've been pretty awesome.

Nah. You've got to have something in Grey that is actually worth buying it for. Rematching Gym Leaders really strikes me like a bonus feature you'd find in a "special edition" like Grey.

but the new leveling system makes that almost unneeded

Even with Audino, I'd still love for the VS Seeker to come back. Rebattling trainers just offers more variety. Plus I kind of liked seeing the trainers getting stronger and catching new Pokemon. Makes the game world seem more dynamic.

Also let it work in buildings and caves and stuff. No idea why they wouldn't let it work before.

In the previous episode’s recap, the narrator says the word "goings-on," and I am flabbergasted that they used the correct form of the word there.

Lucario's freaking out forces Riley to use an Aura shield to block its hyper beam from killing the heroes (dammit, Riley), and they're surprised to learn that Riley is an Aura Guardian even though he is literally wearing a modernized version of Sir Aaron's clothing. Only Dawn has an excuse to not know what Riley is already. Riley explains that something "far more powerful than Lucario's Aura is coming from the ruins,” so, finally, Ash and Brock grab Lucario.

Riley tells Pikachu to use thunderbolt on Lucario, but Ash is hesitant to hurt a friend.

Meanwhile, the laser beam from the ruins hits Mount Coronet, and Professor Rowan and "the other research facilities" detect energy sources. Yes, that’s all the detail we get. Meanwhile meanwhile, the meteorites outside of Veilstone City light up. Meanwhile meanwhile meanwhile, Team Rocket and Barry see slabs in the ruins glowing blue. Meanwhile meanwhile meanwhile meanwhile, Saturn tells Cyrus that they've found the basic location of Spear Pillar on Mount Coronet and are scanning for a more precise location.

Ash finally forces himself to tell Pikachu to use thunderbolt, but because he and Brock and attached to Lucario, it hits all of them, and because Lucario has the greatest stamina, it just runs off after getting hit. Wow, that was pointless. Lucario attempts to attack Team Plasma's machine but fails, and Riley realizes the machine is causing the radio steel nonsense. Meanwhile, Dawn and Piplup end up with Team Rocket and Barry (don’t ask, it’s… just stupid Piplup nonsense).

Ash and Brock have Pikachu, Staravia, Croagunk, and Sudowoodo attack, and Pikachu destroys the machine because only it is considered marketable enough to do something this heroic. The ruins stop glowing and the laser shuts down, causing all of the steel pokemon to go back to normal. Saturn tells Cyrus that they only managed to scan 60% of Mount Coronet for the Spear Pillar.

Cyrus tells Mars to "obliterate it," and Team Plasma goons start setting up explosives around the ruins while Mars and her other goons try to escape. The heroes confront Mars, who pulls out a detonator and claims that, if they attack her, she'll blow up the entire island. Riley tells Lucario to "find them all," because apparently he thinks it's reasonable to tell Lucario to find bombs that are, as far as he knows, scattered around an entire island. As she escapes, Ash calls her a jerk. That’s his real line. “What a jerk!”

Lucario detects the bombs under the ruins, so it and Riley go to disable them. Mars wants to detonate them immediately, but she needs three minutes to escape to a safe distance. Riley and Lucario can't disable the bombs, however, so he says there's "only one chance to pull this off." Cut to Mars pressing the detonator, and then to Riley and Lucario using their Auras to create a force bubble around the explosion and keep it from hurting anyone. They throw the force bubble with the explosion into the sky, where it detonates harmlessly.

Also, Carnivine learns how to use vine whip, which allows Team Rocket, Dawn, and Barry to escape the hole they're in. Barry and Team Rocket had no significance to these episodes except for when Barry called the heroes to Iron Island to begin with.

Carolina arrives in a helicopter, and is happy to see the Iron Ruins. She determines that Team Galactic's machine is made of the same stuff as the meteors around Veilstone City, which means Team Galactic crafted it from one, and that the ruins themselves were made of a giant meteor, and so is the island (sure why not). She also explains that Spear Pillar is necessary to summon Dialga and Palkia, and that the ruins can pinpoint its location, and briefly mentions that she majored in Exposition and not, as you might think, Archeology.

Finally, Mars apologizes for failing to destroy the island.

As far as Riley knows, it should be impossible. If he was thinking logically, he'd have tried to get the heroes and himself off of the island in the few minutes they had.

The lack of plot development in the Don Battle tournament didn't bother me in the slightest. I just like seeing the battles, plus it was cool since basically every trainer Ash, Iris, and Cilan had battled up to that point showed up again to take part.

The episode titles, though, make it sound like the heroes barely even participate. Scraggy vs. Simisage, Druddigon vs. Bisharp, Bisharp vs. Emboar, and Throh vs. Sawk? Only one of those Pokemon is owned by a main character, and it's in the first round. The Sawk most likely belongs to Stephan, and the Emboar and Bisharp could be Bianca's and Georgia's. Plus there was that one trainer with the Druddigon way back when, who could show up again.

It would be pretty cool if Cilan's Pansage evolved, but I highly doubt that's going to happen within the next two episodes.

Pikachu and Piplup are stranded on an island. The narrator then tells us that to learn how this happened, we need to have a flashback. Wow, how… necessary a way to start your episode.

Team Rocket sneaks onto a ship the heroes are on to steal Pikachu and Piplup. They escape in their submarine, and Ash and Buizel chase them to a current, into which Team Rocket is swept away. He surfaces and Officer Jenny appears in a police boat, explaining that Dawn and Brock put in an SOS for him. Even though Ash had, at no point, come up for air, so Officer Jenny received this SOS, at the most, thirty seconds ago. Damn is this woman fast. She goes back to the ship and gets Dawn and Brock, and the four of them ride off in the police boat rather than leaving Ash on the ship where it's safe and following the mafia on her own.

Pikachu and Piplup wash ashore on a deserted island. Pikachu goes to find some food and sees a shining light on a mountain, which it does not investigate. Pikachu and Piplup climb onto a hill and use thunderbolt and bubblebeam into the sky to attract attention (which is probably smarter than most of the things the human characters do), but a storm randomly rolls in and their attacks only cause the storm to shock them back.

Cut to the heroes. Jenny explains that the pokemon are in the area called "Diablo's Ocean," so called because this is where Blizzard forces you to maintain an internet connection to play single-player games (still, it’s better than Mass Effect Pond, where you have to pay 800 dollars on day 1 to get full access to everything). There's only one island here, and it's surrounded by rocks that give off "strange energy" that mess with compasses, so approaching it is difficult (later, Jenny will have no difficulty reaching the island). Ash sends out Buizel and Staravia to go to the island and scout ahead.

Pikachu and Piplup see some water pokemon carrying pieces of rock, and follow them to see them using the rocks to surround a glowing egg. The egg flies into the air and drops back to the ground. A Corphish explains that a while ago, a Deoxys was flying to this island (nevermind why) when it was struck by lightning. It crashed into a mountain and turned into an egg (nevermind why). Since then, they've taken care of the egg (nevermind why) by destroying some of the strange energy rocks and setting them near the egg to make it glow and fly. The water pokemon and Pikachu swim to another strange energy rock underwater (Pikachu can breathe underwater, this is apparently canon). At this point, Staravia and Buizel find Pikachu and Piplup and, rather than saying hi, immediately return to the heroes.

The strange energy rocks make the egg fly into the air again and grow energy tendrils, but Team Rocket chooses this moment to appear again and kidnap Pikachu and Piplup. Staravia saves them, and the heroes arrive. Officer Jenny puts her hands on her waist and tells Team Rocket that they're under arrest in a confrontational tone. You go, girl.

Team Rocket tries to attack, but the egg morphs into Deoxys. Deoxys uses the stones to... restore itself, I guess, and Team Rocket blasts off in the ensuing battle in which Deoxys proves to be caring and heroic. Jenny speculates the rocks give off strange energy because they’re meteorites.

An aurora appears in the sky for absolutely no reason, and now Deoxys must go. Because... because. Later, the heroes speculate on how Deoxys uses meteors to restore its power. This makes sense, because both come from space.

I will never understand why Island of the Giant Pokemon was a one-time thing.
If you're going to have lengthy sequences in which Pokemon are the only characters and exposition happens, why not use subtitles?
