I watch The Shend (uploads a bunch of Japanese 3S footage as it becomes available), Cross Counter, Renic, and occasionally Maximillian if he's covering something I'm interested in.
someone wrote a sfxt-related post that spoke to me:
You know how everyone b****es about SFIV's low blockstun, strong reversals and anti-airs? Well this is what happens when you have high blockstun and weak reversals and anti-airs. Increasing blockstun without increasing pushback is a bad idea IMO. You get 10 years to hit-confirm, can safely just walk-jab * infinity against chars with no reversals, and it's pretty easy to setup x-ups that many chars simply cannot reliably AA. What they needed to do was increase blockstun, pushbacks, walkspeeds and have usable throws. This would have lead to a much more dynamic close-up and footsie game than the shallow jab-walk-jab-jab-jab x-up affair that seems to dominate many matchups at the moment. The number of positive implications should be obvious.
And yes, I'm aware that that not every match plays like that, and I know that some characters have ways around this, but the point is that it's a style of play that seems so common that you just can't help but notice and get annoyed by it.
yes sir
the crossup part I nearly bolded. it's so dumb how many characters have killer crossup options and how so few characters have decent options to deal with them.
I don't hate this game but man, it could've been a lot better than it is.
Week 1.5 Impressions. I've been running Chun/Cammy for awhile now. Not going to sugar coat it, Chun feels awful.
1) Has "good" pokes which really doesn't matter -- whiffing a st.strong is so risky, if they just happen to guess right and jump over your st.strong, its always a free combo for them granted they don't have a super floaty jump. Julia's cr.short is a better example of a "good" poke for this game. It is extremely fast, chains, has good range and is forgiving if you happen to whiff it.
2) Anti-air is a complete nightmare. I was having some decent success with st.MK and st.HP, but its extremely difficult and the pay off isn't that great when compared to Rolento's AAs. df+LK can be used as an anti-air... but if your a frame or two late pressing LK, you eat a full combo. She still gets her hitbox shenanigans with cr.strong and cr.forward, but those are still risky.
3) LK Hasan-shu is crouch blockable... in a game where overheads don't look like overheads and Tekken characters have overheads built into strings. Although LK hasan-shu is comboable off of a raw cl.HK or cl.HP.
4) Even though its SFxT, Chun still has an incredibly floaty jump. Her air-to-air's aren't anything to brag about either. Usually she'd gain a lot meeting someone in the air with fierce-fierce, however in this game counterhit air-to-air will result in a juggle state anyway so no bonus points for Chun.
I can't see myself sticking with Chun or how Chun's viable long-term. How are you people handling Chun's neutral game and other issues?
I agree with a lot of that stuff. but a lot of pros are using her! she's probably actually good and her stuff requires like actual talent or something.
While your individual points are accurate in spots, I disagree with the overall tone. I think Chun is a very, very strong character in this game.
First and foremost, run away is very strong in this game once you have a lead. If you get a lead with your point character and tag/cross rush into Chun, she'll finish the combo for 300-400 and gain positional advantage to hold your lead for the end of the match.
Matchups: The best characters in this game so far have tools that Chun just flat out blows up. Ryu cr. MK? Out poke it. Hadoken? Raw super. Grapplers get flat out frozen by Chun. I don't know about the tekken characters, but Ryu and Ken have some problems against the strongest woman in the world. Need more experience before I can comment on Rolento, but it's worth note that you can do a lot of the same things he can do.
You guys are talking about her high/low game. Who needs it? Her chip game is GREAT. You can just poke into legs and do chip and build meter. This is not a reaction to J.Wong, as you can look back in the thread and see that I called this pretty much from day one. St.MP xx legs is just too good, and it's not going anywhere. And if a character slips into your range and you pushed MP, she'll adjust to the double hitting cl.MP.
I haven't used this too much yet, but according to the Brady guide, her EX Hazanshu is completely projectile invincible. That's just so good.
And her anti airs are underrated. We all know what they are, but keep in mind that if you have misgivings about whether or not you'll trade, just block until you can back dash. I think her back dash is flat out amazing.
So much of her SF4 game is just thrown out the window. No focus into frame advantage pokes. Throw game is weaker. Old block strings are worthless. Cl.HK xx lk. Hazanshu isn't a high/low mixup. No more Kikosho.
But with the pace of this game and her new tools, I think she is a much, much better character. In SF4 you NEEDED damage, or a vortex or some broken invincibility mixup to really compete, and Chun was a footsie/poke character. In this game, it's more footsie based, vortexes are dead and she has much better practical damage than SF4. The only thing she doesn't have is a true invincible anti air, but if she did, she'd be flat out broken. Even her low health is mitigated by how easily you can save tag into your partner to regain life.
I just hope that too many people don't pick her up and make her a target for the nerf bat.
this also sounds reasonable. I just don't do a lot of these things. sounds like I need to be experimenting and actually learning things about this game.
Maximillian can get pretty annoying sometimes, I agree. I think much of it has to do with the fact that he really isn't that great of a player as it seems like he is, because it seems like the guys who are actually constantly doing well in the tournaments crack jokes about how he's not that good. I know I recall Mike Ross and someone else taking a jab at him on a stream.
Let's be real. He plays Strider in UMvC3 and his entire strategy devolves into spamming his assist and then using level 3 Ouroboros. If he doesn't have that, he's really not that impressive.

maximillian admits he's not that great. There's a reason he's called the ONLINE warrior, Thats why any attemptsfrom the pros to call him out is just plain jackassery. He doesn't only do Fighting games either, he's informative in other games as well (However hated they may be)
Max is liked a lot because he actually tries teaching people the basics and some slight advanced stuff in a simple and informative manner, sometimes fun (Think AVGN when being at his best in terms of knowledge). Also for Doom.
In Latveria, Doom puts you in a blender.

Oh SuperNiceDog's doing it again dude. SuperNiceDog, you ain't no pimp dude
There's some interesting conversation going on in here!
At this stage, the 3rd Strike Online Warrior series is geared towards average to below average players who are looking to try out other games beyond SF4. As with a lot of my content, I try to offer something for everyone. 10% of people who watch these things are actually really good at the game, another 10% are decent, and literally 80% are casual players looking for entertainment or to hopefully get something out of this.
For 3rd Strike veterans, I can absolutely attest that this series in it's current state is not meant for you, but I only hope it could be entertaining to a degree. I've never claimed myself to be amazing at 3S, only my sheer love for the game itself. Please don't take what I say in this show as direct instructions, as I'm only trying to persuade people who are newer to fighting games as having a different direction than FADC-Ultra or backdash out of everything. There's a ton of other quality fighting games out there that deserve playtime, and 3S is absolutely one of them.
I also like to give props to real, successful tournament 3S players, like Renic and Gootecks in the latest vid. I only meant to spark a conversation with 3S videos amongs players and viewers alike, and judging by this thread...it seems to have worked to a degree. I appreciate any support you guys give for the time I invest into making these videos.
and that about sums it up I think. so long as you understand the target audience his stuff can be entertaining.

I could have sworn I gave Viscant a load of s*** for winning Evo with team tier list and you gave me crap for that.
Suddenly you're chewing someone out for using a character that's at best top 15.

I really don't care how Maximillian stacks up to the top tier. That's not the reason anyone should watch someone's videos, unless you're trying to learn directly from them or something. The best thing about Maximillian is his personality and presentation. Doesn't matter to me if he isn't winning EVO tournaments! He's never come off as being someone who believes he's the best, which is nice.

so the other day it rained real hard and I slipped on some wet pavement and my arm hurt, but it seemed all better
After about 20 matches of SSF4 though, my arm is in lots of pain again. Arcade sticks are not a good idea when multiple sections of your arm are very bruised.

ONLY FIVE CAN LADDER. Sushi, kamikaze, fujiyama, nippon-ichi...
The input lag tests between PS3 and 360 average out to basically the same. PS3 runs at a consistent 60 FPS where the 360 dips at some points.
Also people say with a seemingly large degree of certainty that the diagonals on analog problem is 360 specific and not an issue on PS3. And of course, couch co-op play is PS3 only.
Now with those lag and FPS tests done, there's no longer any question. PS3 is the place to play this game, it's better in every respect.
also I guess I should ask before we ever get to it, where do we go to upload 3s videos? do you have to do it right after the match or can you look through a match log and pick matches to put up?
