I don't know about the books... but the show is damn good!
I plan on getting the books. For now, I'll just enjoy the show! -- It's not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you. ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: StifledSilence | #003 Yes they do. You just have to use your imagination!!!! The books are better, but the show is still fantastic. I'd suggest reading the books first, as it will help you understand the show better (some of the backstory and such) but you can get by either way. -- Luster: Yeah, that's the most intense method of consuming cocaine. ... Books then show.
The show has to cut stuff in order for it all to fit, and several people I know that didn't read the books were confused at first because they didn't know who was what. -- The Diligent One ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yes, I know this is an unpopular opinion (in fact, very unpopular), but after watching the show I skipped the first book and went to to read Clash.
I finished yesterday A Dance with Dragons and I don't think that having skipped the first one has affected my views on it in any way. -- Dr Football > Dr Soccer ... Copied to Clipboard!

I watched the first two episodes and then read the whole series before the first season ended.

From: Theon_Greyjoy | #010 That's probably the biggest thing you lose from not reading the first book. They don't even give you reason to doubt anything in the show. The show has some nice additions though. And not just the gratuitous nudity. One thing I love about the books that no one seems to mention was how they took a seemingly one sided villain from book 1 and then showed us the other side in book 3. In particular they showed a flashback from one character's POV in book 1, then from the other character's in book 3. It was brilliant. The show won't be able to do that because it already sort of shows us what that character is like.

Never understimate HBO... I think they will sort it out, and they will do a good job about it. If the character is depicted the same way in the first book (and I'm pretty sure he is), the audience should feel the same way when watching the show.

I asked this question last week and the result was an overwhelming "Both are great."
As someone who is easily distracted when reading, I went with the show. I started it today and have watched the first two episodes so far and I say go for it. I'm not lost, and the DVD comes with a handy Character Bios section. -- darkx 3DS FC: 5241-2144-5671 (add me and pm me urs!) http://i40.tinypic.com/mabj1t.gif ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: KamikazePotato | #017 SPOILERS (I guess) I think he's referring to the scene after Jaime kills Aerys. In GoT, we see this from Ned's POV, in which he sees Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne. He believes Jaime wanted the kingship for himself. This is revisited in aSoS, in which Jaime kills Aerys after the latter just tried to burn the whole city down to ashes. Jaime entertains the notion of giving the Iron Throne to whoever comes first. In comes Ned. END SPOILERS I'm personally hoping they'll do some sort of prequel that delves into Robert's Rebellion as well as the events that led up to that war, though I doubt it. -- USE THE CIRCLE PAD TO MOVE! ...
