Which is better?
Which should I look at first?

I don't know about the books... but the show is damn good!

I plan on getting the books. For now, I'll just enjoy the show!

But unfortunately, Rufio is not real. He's imaginary. A fake. Like a made up friend, the way fairies are. You continue to be sad and alone.

Yes they do. You just have to use your imagination!!!!

The books are better, but the show is still fantastic. I'd suggest reading the books first, as it will help you understand the show better (some of the backstory and such) but you can get by either way.

If you're in the mood to read five books at about a thousand pages a piece, you can't go wrong with the books!

Books then show.

The show has to cut stuff in order for it all to fit, and several people I know that didn't read the books were confused at first because they didn't know who was what.

Yes, I know this is an unpopular opinion (in fact, very unpopular), but after watching the show I skipped the first book and went to to read Clash.

I finished yesterday A Dance with Dragons and I don't think that having skipped the first one has affected my views on it in any way.

If you skipped the first book then you don't have the clues to figure out probably the biggest mystery in the series.

I watched the first two episodes and then read the whole series before the first season ended.

Then read DwD.

Reading is the better option. But the show is a good primer.

That's probably the biggest thing you lose from not reading the first book. They don't even give you reason to doubt anything in the show.

The show has some nice additions though. And not just the gratuitous nudity. The books will never have a private conversation between Varys and Littlefinger.

Uhh, no. There is always someone else there.

Unless you're thinking of the conversation Arya overhears, but that definitely wasn't between those two characters.

One thing I love about the books that no one seems to mention was how they took a seemingly one sided villain from book 1 and then showed us the other side in book 3. In particular they showed a flashback from one character's POV in book 1, then from the other character's in book 3. It was brilliant. The show won't be able to do that because it already sort of shows us what that character is like.

Never understimate HBO... I think they will sort it out, and they will do a good job about it. If the character is depicted the same way in the first book (and I'm pretty sure he is), the audience should feel the same way when watching the show.

I asked this question last week and the result was an overwhelming "Both are great."

As someone who is easily distracted when reading, I went with the show. I started it today and have watched the first two episodes so far and I say go for it. I'm not lost, and the DVD comes with a handy Character Bios section.

SPOILERS (I guess)

I think he's referring to the scene after Jaime kills Aerys. In GoT, we see this from Ned's POV, in which he sees Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne. He believes Jaime wanted the kingship for himself. This is revisited in aSoS, in which Jaime kills Aerys after the latter just tried to burn the whole city down to ashes. Jaime entertains the notion of giving the Iron Throne to whoever comes first. In comes Ned.

END SPOILERS

I'm personally hoping they'll do some sort of prequel that delves into Robert's Rebellion as well as the events that led up to that war, though I doubt it.
