Yeah, I just don't see the point of reusing the same Pokemon over and over again each game. Part of the draw of Pokemon to me is being able to use new Pokemon for every playthrough. Because without that, what are you playing for? The story?

I tried to use new pokemon in HG, but there just weren't enough that were viable. Typhlosion and Ampharos were like the only GSC pokemon that really worked for me; I tried to use Xatu but it was crap (I love the design, but it's crap in actual battle, and at least Pidgey is available immediately so you can train one from like level 2). Maybe I wanted to use new pokemon most of the time (though Kadabra and Alakazam are just so good in-game, though not competitively, that I can barely justify not using them), but RBY pokemon are just so convenient.

I've only caught one shiny, a Donphan. Discounting Gyarados, of course. It took forever to assemble the necessary tools via trading, and then even longer to actually breed a shiny Lilligant with good stats.

But my own tempo 31 sp. atk 31 spd Lilligant says hi (unfortunately, it's got a neutral nature instead of modest, but eh).

Pokemon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life
"I have nothing to say about this movie."
Score: 4/10

I am continually amazed at how poorly the opening to these movies explains what pokemon actually are. It would take like ten seconds to say "they're monsters that humans can put into balls and fight against one another, and the main characters are all pokemon trainers."

We get flashbacks to Dialga/Palkia and Dialga/Giratina movies. Holy crap, actual continuity in the movies. Zoom in on Arceus, who's sitting in a... orange ball in another dimension, I guess. We have a flashback to Arceus talking to a human, asking for its Jewel of Life back, only for the human to betray it and try to "destroy" it. Dammit, translators, kids understand the concept of death. Arceus wakes up and screams that "the time has come, human beings must be brought to justice!"

Cut to the heroes, who are walking through a patch of very tall corn. They emerge at Michina Town, "a beautiful place surrounded by nature." Gee, thanks, narrator, I never would have got that if you hadn't told me. Before they enter the town, the heroes decide to take a swim in a river. Watch out, guys, the animation just got really nice, there's no way you're not in a movie right now, and the stakes in movies tend to be higher than the stakes outside of them. Indeed, things aren't fun and games for long, as the heroes are quickly assaulted by nature's most dangerous monsters.
external image
Two kids (who are never named) run by and tell them the watermelons are theirs, and offer to let them keep them if they have a tag battle. Oh God, it's the opening theme, remixed with violins. I like how effortlessly Pikachu and Piplup defeat their Heracross and Beautifly. It's like... the battle goes exactly as you'd expect a regional champion fighting two random little kids to go.

The kids mention the town's local ruins of a temple built thousands of years ago, because all towns have local ancient ruins. The heroes decide to visit it, and learn that it’s literally on top of a mountain surrounded by a river. Well, a portal opens in the sky over the river, drawing some water into it. Not knowing what's going on, Ash orders Pikachu to attack the water. Heavy winds pick up, and Pikachu and Piplup, lighter than the humans, are drawn into the portal. Fortunately, a man and woman, named Kevin and Sheena, show up, and the woman summons Dialga out of a portal and tells it to save the pokemon and seal the portal. By the way, we’ll never learn how she summoned Dialga from another dimension, since her powers, as she explains them later, do not work that way.

The heroes are momentarily happy to see Dialga, but Giratina appears out of another portal and attacks it. This doesn’t really make sense, since they-- oh screw it. Kevin and Sheena tell the heroes to run away because it's too dangerous. The heroes agree to leave, and literally do not take a single step. Now, we don’t learn this next part for a while, but I’m going to just tell you it now for simplicity’s sake: Sheena can link her heart with a pokemon’s heart to communicate with it, but not if it’s too angry. Giratina is too angry to listen, but when it sees Ash and remembers him from the previous movie, it calms down and Sheena is able to explain that Dialga’s intentions aren’t hostile, so Giratina leaves.

Sheena and Kevin explain that they’re the guardians of this temple, and like all properly ancient temples, it has only two teenaged guardians rather than like a tourist attraction-level of security guards. Well, whatever, Sheena then tells the heroes about the town’s local legend: thousands of years ago, back in the time of when this place looked like Ancient Greece instead of… whatever it looks like now, we never actually see Machina Town, meteors rained from the sky and threatened to destroy it. Arceus appeared and stopped them, but the effort nearly killed it, and it lost its sixteen life plates, with which it is immortal and invincible to any attack. Fortunately, a human named Damos found the plates and returned them, and Arceus repaid him by granting him five of its life plates forged into the Jewel of Life, which Damos was able to use to revitalize the formerly desolate area and create a proper town. When Arceus returned for the plates on the day of an eclipse, Damos betrayed him. Arceus escaped, but without the Jewel of Life, and has slept for thousands of years. It’s going to awaken soon, however, and when it does it will “bring humanity to justice.” Dawn reacts to the idea of justice like you’d react to the idea of “murder with a rusty knife.” By the way, when I said “going to awaken soon,” I meant “going to awaken right now,” and it appears maybe sixty seconds later. Fortunately, Sheena already has the Jewel of Life and plans to return it, and she feels she has to do it because she is the descendant of Damos. Even though Damos lived thousands of years ago and you would have to assume he’s the ancestor of literally millions of people.

Arceus appears and explains that the most logical, rational way for justice to appear is in the form of laser blasts from the sky that attack literally everything except the humans, causing massive devastation all around the countryside. You have to admit, that is a unique form of justice.

Sheena runs out and asks Arceus to stop, offering apologies and the Jewel of Life. Arceus shatters it, however, and reveals that it's not the Jewel of Life, since the real thing is immune to being shattered, as all magical artifacts are. Then it destroys the temple because why not? Sheena tries to connect to its heart, but Arceus is too angry and it fails.

Well, to cut it short, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina show up to defend the humans, but get their asses handed to them, so Dialga sends everyone except Kevin back in time to when Damos betrayed Arceus.

Indeed, Arceus exits through a portal, and asks Damos to return the Jewel of Life. Damos asks Arceus to follow him inside the temple, only to use dozens of concealed pokemon to attack it with thunderbolt at the same time, then tries to bury it under hundreds of pounds of rubble, then he has the pokemon shock the rubble just to be sure. Of course, Arceus survives and uses some laser blasts on the temple walls, and Damos, and another human who’s dressed like a high priest or something, falls to his death. Sheena asks Dialga to send everyone further back into the past. It does so, but in the present, with the pokemon still battling, it collapses from exhaustion.

The heroes are now a few hours before Damos’ betrayal. To cut this short, this time period hasn’t invented pokeballs yet, so pokemon are enslaved with metal harnesses that… I guess force them to follow commands, I don’t know. The high priest from earlier is named Marcus, and he has the heroes imprisoned by having his Bronzong hypnotize them (by the way, when he later fights the heroes, he doesn’t just have Bronzong hypnotize them in two seconds) while he talks to Sheena.

The heroes meet Damos in the prison, and learn that he has no intention of betraying Arceus. Marcus plans to hypnotize him into betraying Arceus so that they can keep the Jewel of Life, as Marcus fears the land will return to desolation if the Jewel is returned. Also Marcus has the same heart-to-heart connection powers as Sheena. Fortunately, Pikachu, Piplup, and Marcus’ Pichu rescue them. Unfortunately, Marcus learns from Sheena what he did wrong in the future when he tried to betray Arceus, so this time, he knows to use silver water instead of rubble. Silver water seems to be cement or something, I’m not completely certain. He tells Sheena to give Arceus the Jewel of Life back, and gives her his staff, which he claims will open up to reveal the jewel.

Arceus appears and asks for the jewel, so Sheena opens the staff and-- nothing. Marcus has Arceus shocked, and then has thousands of gallons of silver water poured onto it, which sticks it to the ground and forces it to take even more attacks. Ash and Dawn attack Marcus while Damos and Sheena, who by now realizes that Damos is innocent, try to calm Arceus. They fail, so they instead calm the other pokemon, asking them to stop attacking it. Ash steals the Jewel of Life and offers it to Arceus, but, in a twist, Arceus is already dead.

Everyone from the future begins to disappear Back to the Future-style, since if Arceus is dead, they have no reason to go the past, but Damos reaches out to it one last time with his powers and gets it to wake up. It accepts the Jewel, regaining its powers, and when the temple starts to collapse for literally no reason, saves everyone except Marcus, whom it lets fall to his painful death (Marcus actually survives in the credits scenes, but still). Then it departs back to its dimension to rest.

The heroes return to the present, but Arceus is still rampaging and attacking Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina. When it sees Ash, however, it calms down, and history rewrites itself so the temple is never destroyed. When the heroes wonder why the land is fertile if the Jewel of Life was necessary to restore it, Arceus explains that Sheena’s ancestors taking care of the land fixed it, and Arceus’ power was never necessary at all. Then it tells the heroes that they have a beautiful world, and that it’s happy to be a part of it, before it leaves into its own dimension to not return for thousands of more years and interact with the human world as little as possible.

This is the worst kind of movie, one that’s boring and has nothing to make jokes about. Sorry, it’s just kind of there. It doesn’t even have any funny frames to take out of context other than the watermelons. It’s not even that bad, it’s just… merely bad.

I fear trying to find season 13, though. He probably won't be willing to help me out with that, it took him a while to find even these movies.

Which part?
If it's about the attack... uh... Giratina attacking Dialga and its reasons for doing so was kinda the catalyst for the previous movie, and it was strongly implied that when it left, it was still looking for Dialga or Palkia.

Then it tells the heroes that they have a beautiful world, and that it’s happy to be a part of it, before it leaves into its own dimension to not return for thousands of more years and interact with the human world as little as possible.
I'm a bit less upset about this than I was with Regigigas, because at least you got the idea that Arceus felt like hanging out with Damos for a bit during the flashbacks. It could always find an excuse to return later.

Other things that deserved at least a sentence or two worth of jokes:
* The series actually made an attempt, successful or otherwise, to convince everyone that they need to add an unevolvable Pichu to their party/card collection/want list simply because it has a notch in its ear.
* Johto starter inanity.
* "Magical creature". Suffice to say, there are very few people in the movie who actually use the word Pokémon, probably because they haven't figured out how to put a mon into a Poké yet.
* Heatran. Actually, the fact that it showed up and there was nothing to say about it speaks for itself.
