That's true. I haven't seen a superhero movie since Dark Knight, but all these Marvel films in the last 3-4 years seem to have been really well received. If you're expecting a kinda silly summer blockbuster and it ends up being a quality movie, it could convince others to go.

You know what I would love?

Attendance. Not money made in ticket sales, just the amount of tickets sold. Because, at least at my theater, prices raised at least $0.50, maybe even $0.75 since Potter. And that's not counting 3D sales.

Yeah, that's true. It'd be nice to see an adjusted total. But at least it's a fair comparison against The Hunger Games.
I mean, THG was huge, so it's pretty crazy to think The Avengers comes along right after and smashes it's opening weekend by ~47 mil.

Considering they released five full length movies in the form of teaser trailers, it would be hard to not have heard of it by now.

That much since last July already? Ouch.

Even accounting for a widespread 10% increase in ticket prices, it would still wallop Potter in attendance though.

It also depends on how widespread 3D was for each. I saw Potter in 2D and I'll be seeing Avengers in 3D, so I'll pay $3 more for Avengers. If that's common, it would make sense.

Box Office Mojo says that average ticket price inflation from 2011 to 2012 overall is 1.4%

Adjusting HP7Part2's Opening Weekend ($169,189,427) by that amount would mean that the Adjusted For Inflation comparison between the two opening weekends would be:

Avengers: $200,300,000 (estimate)
Deathly Hallows 2: $171,558,079

So it's a little closer.

As long as 3-D tickets were around half of the ones sold, I think The Avengers is still ahead of The Dark Knight in ticket sales for this weekend (assuming the estimate holds.) TDK should probably still outgross it over all (It will almost certainly end up being more popular adjusted for inflation/3-D/population size) as movies today are very front loaded, even in comparison to four years ago.

I don't think Dark Knight Rises has a chance at breaking this at all. It'll probably do around $185 million at best. And The Avengers has a realistic shot at becoming the 3rd highest grossing movie ever, only behind Cameron's two juggernauts.

Not a fair comparison. Not only was tickets much cheaper back then (even with inflation in mind) but you didn't have home video at all so you had to see it in a theatre if you wanted to see it period... Meaning they could have theatrical runs lasting years aswell as multiple re-releases.

I think one of the reasons the sales total is that much higher is the Thursday night showings. To my knowledge, nobody went to see a show on Friday at 12:01 am on any of those other releases. Then again, I could just be ignorant, but there were a ton of midnight showings around here, all sold out.

This, but also don't forget that even if you adjust for the average ticket price at the time, epic films such as Gone with the Wind and Ben-Hur would have cost three to four times as much as other movies of that era, since different films were priced differently (to an extent) back then. Adjusting for inflation, some of the major Cinemascope films would have cost ~$30 to see in their initial New York runs. Also, there was a smaller population, so an equivalent number of tickets sold in 1955 and 2012 would indicate that the 1955 movie was much more popular

I was expecting it to top the opening weekend charts, but not like this. It didn't break the record, it obliterated it. And frankly there's no way TDKR can top this. It might not even beat TDK. Even if it does beat TDK and Potter, can it do it by $30 million? No way, not without 3D, and even with it, I doubt it would happen. No Joker, No Ledger, the word of mouth hype probably won't be as huge...

I think we shouldn't compare TDKR to The Avengers, we should compare it to TDK. And even with inflation it'll be interesting to see if it tops it. TDK was a one-of-a-kind sensation that's going to be hard to beat, especially when your only virtue is "being Batman".

Well, Deathly Hallows Part II had 20 sold-out midnight showings at the two theaters closest to me alone, my then gf and I at attendance, and we live in a fairly small town, so I can only imagine the damage done elsewhere.

The movie industry doesn't like phrasing its stats in inflation-adjusted or attendance terms because it benefits from a constant stream of "record-breaking" films.

In terms of overall attendance a film like Gone with the Wind probably obliterates Avengers.
