Meh, Bartz is basically completely boring and generic whereas Squall was actively annoying. His style of aggressive apathy just really annoyed me. I think he improved later in the game, but unfortunately first impressions mean a lot, so I'll forever remember him as the guy who doesn't give a s*** and really wants to make sure you know it.

Though Bartz is only that high because he was funny in Dissidia. Without Dissidia move him down to just above Squall.

Also, you gotta remember that I'm old. I could see maybe Squall's attitude speaks to you if you're like 13 or 14 when you first play it. I was 20 by the time FF8 came out and at that point I was so uninterested in seeing that kind of high school angst in a video game.

Are you kidding? Age has a huge effect on how you see things. And yeah, if you like something the first time you play it, that also has a big effect on whether you like it later.

3. Laguna. I'd like Quistis to get one top ten, but otherwise just getting her average up. Maybe also Ramza. Most of my favorites do pretty well in this.

5. Eh, no. I don't hate him or anything, but I'm kind of baffled by his popularity. CC wasn't really a great game, and Zack didn't do much for me. Could definitely be much worse though.

1. What did you think about CXIV and the new regime? (#banffd and #longliveffd are both acceptable answers)

Best one so far with a great winner and great top 10. You are a better host than raytan obviously, though start-time wise I preferred the old regime.

3. Which character are you hoping to make a run next contest?

Realistically, Cloud. I will support him over my usual #1 (Sephy) next time, as a part of operation CRY.


7. What number would you like to see the field at next year? (75/80/85/90/95/100)

About 80 would be best.


8. With the floodgates open next year, which newcomers and returners would you like to see?

I would have to look into that, I'll probably nominate Rufus Shinra. Most important for me is that you don't distinguish between newcomers and returners (by not having a set amount of spots for both) and just take the top nominated characters. I guess this won't happen, but I just don't see the point in taking any other than the most wanted characters.


9. Questions? Comments? Suggestions?

Round times were a little Euro-unfriendly. Being in a small minority I can understand that, but the top 10 night round streak was particularly brutal. Just FYI, ideal start times that work both ways are doesn't matter (morning rounds) and about 5-6 PM EST for "night" rounds.

Personally, I find Squall's attitude to be a great boost to his character overall. I like a man who doesn't let his emotions interfere with his mission.

Vaan is really likable for around the first three hours. Then he drops off the map into nothingness (i.e., 5/10). Averages out to about 6/10 overall.

Zidane's also around 6/10 quality: kinda likable but nothing special. Cecil/Vaan/Zidane are all really close in terms of my ranking -- could swap them around depending on mood.

I'm standing by the Squall ranking though. I dislike him, initially, because he has nothing to fight for. Others are fighting for justice, for freedom, for personal pride and ambition, for revenge. I can sympathize with all of that. But Squall has nothing that he's fighting for; he's just obeying orders. He doesn't have any dream beyond obedience to his superiors. It's painful to watch.

Equally painful is the fact that everyone around him seems to look up to him as a role model and leader despite this grating apathy. It feels really contrived to me. Like, Squall's the main character, and because of that, people are made to look up to him and to put him in a position of leadership. It's baffling to me how people could actually want a leader who has no vision, no dreams.

Of course, eventually Squall does find something to fight for: Rinoa. But that's even worse!

So yeah.

I thought the only time Vaan was likable was the Basch thing. Also what you said about Squall is how I seem to remember Cloud being in terms of having no reason to fight. I don't recall him really fighting for anything until Sephiroth stuff, but 10-12 years is a long time so maybe I forgot if he had any reason before that.

Cloud was like that really early on, but as soon as Sephiroth pops up, he's all about hunting him down and getting revenge (which happens in like the first couple hours of the game). By the time you get to Kalm, Cloud's "I don't care" front is totally gone.

Hmm, I thought it took until Disc 2 or longer. I mostly just remember people saying KH ruined Cloud, but I thought he was exactly how I pictured him in FF7 so I never got those complaints. Anyways my rankings.

I watched some CC scenes so I feel I can sort of rank where Zack would go. I didn't watch a whole lot of them because his voice was kind of annoying unfortunately and none of the scenes I watched were particularly interesting.

Even before that, Cloud doesn't really -not- have a reason.

Since he thinks he's Zack and all, he has been massively betrayed by Shinra -- he's pretty much a fugitive so he's kinda gotta make ends meet with terrorist groups like Avalanche -- I always kinda saw his taking jobs with Avalanche (and staying, despite the pay being uncertain etc) as kind of an implicit anti-Shinra thing, once you learn of his past and such.

And yeah, the Sephiroth stuff kicks in way before disc 2 -- starts in the Shinra building and really kicks in once you get to Kalm (first post-midgar town) and cloud tells "what happened" at the mako reactor in Nibelheim.
