We are to welcome the new general manager of the WWF....James J. Dillon! He's been brought in to get WWF under control! (65, Executive Consultant gets 78) Lawler brings Tully on the King's Court. They're gonna beat up Faces of Fear tonight! (82) And indeed they do, albeit not without some difficulty. (59) Razor Ramon takes us on a tour of DC, since we're in the area. (42)

Snuka and Jones dispatch the pairing of Reigns and Koloff. (66) Future Perfect are taking the tournament off to get back into the swing of working together. (55) Bruno beats Atlas. (67)

Since Martel or Schultz will be taking a shot at DiBiase, they're in six-man action against Money and Power and Death! They'll need a partner, though, so they've brought in....Flair! (70) It pays off for them, as the odd alliance of Flair and Style and Substance prevails over DiBiase and the Williams boys. (81)

Sheik tells Hogan he wasn't ready for him last time! (66) Ventura is out. They've found the guy who messed with him with the snake, and the IC Champ demands an apology! Out comes...JAKE ROBERTS, Damien in tow! Nothing of the sort will happen again.....trust him! (74, The Snake gets 83)

For our main event, the WWF team of Muraco, Duggan, and Steamboat fails to subdue the All Japan team of Hansen, Baba, and Tsuruta. (78) I don't have brainpower left to type up a story here but DVE gives his proxy power shot to Funk again because all japan is out of control or something. (95)

Wk. 2, 12/84

Pre-show: Atlas d. Sika (63)

We open on the King's Court set. Lawler will get to his guest in a moment, but takes a moment to gloat about punking out Muraco last week. Guess we know who the REAL king is around here! Muraco has heard enough, and marches out to the ring. Lawler turns right into a Rac Bottom! (70) Ventura and DiBiase prevail over the Faces of Fear in a tough match. That's why they're champs, I guess! (62)

Style and Substance are going to announce their intentions for title action on ASW next week! (47) Snuka and Jones are excited to get back to tagging up and kicking booty in the tournament! (57) Jake Roberts is back! He makes a pretty big impact by dispatching former IC Champ Ivan Koloff! (71) Ventura interrupts Jake post-match. Ventura is still livid with the newcomer, and wants to fight him for the IC Title! Jake'd be right happy to. (60)

Tully and Windham debate the likelihood of Windham breaking the glass ceiling. (79) Windham gives a good account of himself, but Tully gets the win. (78) Hogan confronts Sheik. If Sheik wasn't ready, brother, how about they have a rematch next week? Plenty of time to prepare. (66)

Tag Tournament action! The Williams Brothers are competing against DVE and Ricky Steamboat. Dynamite pins DVE after DiBiase smashes the Von Erich with the coal miners' glove! (79) Money and Power and Death celebrate their ill-gotten gains, but are interrupted by Flair and Duggan! As the only other qualified team so far, they're gonna make sure the Williamses don't get away with their tricks! (90) Duggan stays in the ring for the main event, wherein he gets out-brawled by Terry Funk. (80) Funk continues to ponder his life, but there's no time for that, as All Japan hits the ring! There's plenty of tension between the two- Hansen kicked Funk out of All Japan, and now DVE has cited this as the reason for AJ's decline, and given Funk a guaranteed shot at the title! They stare each other down, and then explode into a brawl. Hansen's fresh, and he has the title belt as well as Baba and Tsuruta. Funk gets beaten savagely after getting in a few hits. (91, face turn was a complete success)

Pre-show: Snuka/Jones d. Saito/Misawa (66)

Style and Substance have decided! Martel is going for DiBiase and the NWA Title! (46) WWF Champ Hansen teams up with Tenryu, carrying him somewhat (in kayfabe at least) to a win over the Faces of Fear. (72) He informs us that Funk got kicked out of All Japan because he wasn't good enough! If Funk wants to mess with him, Hansen'll be more than happy to beat a reminder into him! (85)

Lots of All Japan tonight, as Muraco beats AKIO. (69) A particularly awkward King's Court has Razor repeatedly trying to engage Lawler in some sort of "business, yo." (52) Hogan comes out to wrestle Sheik...but Sheik jumps him on the ramp and beats him down! (65) Tully and Bruno practice for the Tag Tournament by defeating the Harts. (68) They're facing FoF tomorrow, but they're ready! (80)

Jake Roberts continues to impress with a win over Afa Reigns (65), but Ventura lays him out afterwards with a cheap shot from the IC Title belt! (70) Funk is starting to get into the whole face concept, and puts away Giant Baba. (75)

Flair and Duggan are hyped for the Tag Tournament. They'll go through those cheating Williams Brothers, or anybody else in their way! (92) Tonight, they're joined by Steamboat, while the Williamses are joined by DiBiase to complete the Money and Power and Death trifecta. It's a back and forth match. David Von Erich shows up at ringside! He makes a big show of stealing the NWA Title belt, much to DiBiase and Dynamite's consternation. They reclaim the belt, but in doing so leave Steve to take a beating and a pinfall! (88) DVE laughs at MPD's distress, and says they screwed him, so he's gonna screw back! Maybe DVE will join Martel in that NWA Title match! (91)

Pre-show: Razor d. Garea (47)

We kick off with tag tournament action! Faces of Fear faces the new team of Tully and Bruno. Power and experience win out over teamwork and ferocity, as the heel pairing picks up the eventual win. (66) Flair and Duggan congratulate them on the win, and would be interested to see them at the PPV. The heels are also interested. (91) Jules Strongbow tells us that his partner, Rocky Johnson, has broken his leg. This might be the end of the Survivors, but Stronbow will survive and move forward! Show of hands: who believes him? (35)

Sheik beats Atlas. (78) Hogan comes out to confront Sheik, goading him into having an actual match with him at the PPV! (65) Hansen laughs off the threat of Funk. Hansen put that ol' dog down once, and he'll gladly do it again! (92, Bionic Redneck gimmick gets an initial 99) The ol' dog in question gets a win over Tsuruta. (72) Fink interviews that new Shawn Michaels kid. Kid can't talk for beans. (32)

Lawler and Ventura are gonna beat some respect into Muraco and Jake, respectively! (67) The match results say otherwise. (78) Snuka and Jones are up in the tag tourney next week! (60) Our main event sees the tenuous combination of DVE and Style and Substance against Money and Power and Death. SnS eventually get tired of DVE, and abandon him to take a 3-on-1 dogpile and quick loss. (73) The heels continue to beat on the lonely DVE...until Steamboat comes out for the save! (76)

Pre-show: Future Perfect d. Sika/Sharpe (60)

Sheik and Koloff are facing Snuka and Jones tomorrow night in the last qualifier for the tournament! They bicker for a bit, but Sheik and Koloff are going to show everybody RIGHT NOW! (61) ...Or not, as the team of Hogan and Duggan are able to beat the heels. (76) Atlas and Michaels work out together, although HBK seems more interested in the ladies at the gym. (37)

Faces of Fear are disappointed at losing their qualifier, but they put up a good fight, and they're not going to back down because they're hungry for success. (53) Funk continues his rampage through the All Japan flunkies with a win over Tenryu. (75) Hansen pops up after this one and levels the challenger with a LARIATOOOOO (91) Flair puts on a quick clinic of a win over Misawa (76) and is then joined by Duggan to continue hyping up the tag tournament. (94)

Jake is fighting Tully tonight. Sammartino
intercepts Jake to threaten him. Jake's got no chance against Tully, just like the tag tournament has no chance against Tully and Bruno! Jake says he'll see about that. (79) Roberts v. Blanchard turns out to be a hotly contested match. Jesse Ventura comes out to ringside! Ventura turns the tide with a cheap shot, but Tully doesn't get the 3 off it. Jake rolls out of the ring and chases Ventura up the ramp! It's a countout, (88) as Jake chases Ventura briefly around backstage before the IC Champ escapes. (56) Our main event is a non-title three-way tag match: Money and Power, Style and Substance, and the pairing of DVE and Steamboat. Style and Substance doubleteam DVE on the outside for the finish, as DiBiase manages to put away Steamboat. (80) In an angle I forgot to move earlier, Lawler and Muraco continue arguing about who's the REAL king. (82)

Brainstorming ideas for a gimmick for 1985. I'll do a formal poll probably, alongside a mini-prediction contest at the end of the year, but as a sneak peek:

-...but where points rollover if you don't win

Monthly polls
-on who wins at the PPV
-on other things, similar to what I'd use for prizes

Other ideas
-everybody gets to give me one (reasonable) rule to follow or choice to make
-I don't get to use Victor notes on PPV
-Lethal Lottery is actually random, and you get to build brackets/pools for the other tournaments.

...any of those strike anybody's fancy? I'm envisioning alternating between normal years and gimmick years, possibly changing gimmicks every time.

I'm not too worried about momentum- I don't do tons of long-term planning in TEW, and it only slowed me down on a few occasions when I did the first half of this diary with prediction contests.

Thursday Night Raw
Wk. 4, 12/84

Pre-show: Baba/Tsuruta d. Brisco/Rotundo (62)

Flair and Duggan are STILL hyped for the Lou Thesz Memorial Tag Tournament! They might have to go through Tully and Bruno, or the cheatin' Williams Brothers, or whoever wins tonight....but they're gonna climb to the top of the heap! (92) Muraco and Roberts team up against Style and Substance in non-title action. Martel scores a huge win off of interference from Lawler and Ventura! (70) The beatdown continues after the match, as Lawler pummels Muraco and Ventura slams Jake. (63)

Misawa and Saito bring a cryptic note to Hansen's attention. It just says "blood runs thicker." Hansen isn't scared. (54) Razor pins Michaels. I dunno, maybe these kids have something. (45, great chem) Atlas is out to talk about something or other, but Sheik and Koloff come out for their match, and try to run him out of the ring! Mr. USA ain't havin' that, but he's outnumbered 2 to 1...until Snuka and Jones come out for the save! (49) Coincidentally, that's your final tag tournament qualifier. Sheik and Koloff hold their own against Snuka and Jones, but Hogan comes out to ringside. Sheik really wants to get his hands on Hogan, and loses focus on the match, allowing Jones to apply the Weaver Lock for the win. (71) Hogan taunts the irate Sheik. (79)

Future Perfect discuss the tag tournament bracket. They're going with Snuka and Jones' wealth of tag experience over the two brand new teams and the relatively unproven Williams Brothers. (59) We get HOT PREVIEW ACTION from three of those teams next! Flair/Duggan are joined by Faces of Fear, but it's not enough to overcome Bruno, Tully, and the Williamses. (83) Steamboat confronts DiBiase backstage. Money and Power and Death are all dirty cheates, and Steamboat hopes DVE or even Martel takes that NWA Title this weekend! DiBiase laughs it off (72) and proceeds out for the main event. Champions Hansen and DiBiase make an odd pair, but they'll be facing Funk and DVE, who do have history together. The newly minted faces are able to pick up a key win to close the show! (82)

WWF PRESENTS LOU THESZ MEMORIAL TAG TOURNAMENT

Pre-show: Atlas/FoF d. Razor/Reigns/Koloff (72)

Steamboat visits DVE to wish him luck. (84) The NWA Title kicks off the show, with DiBiase defending against DVE and Martel. DiBiase is looking a little rattled without the Williamses there to watch his back, but he is able to control his share of the match regardless. DiBiase gets both men down and goes up top to fall backwards onto DVE...but Martel rushes the ropes, and knocks him outside with an assist from Schultz! Martel goes to pick the bones on DVE...but runs right into the Iron Claw! He's got no choice but to tap! David Von Erich wins the NWA Title! (96) DiBiase is furious, and calls the Williams Brothers out early! Money and Power and Death put the boots to Style and Substance as DVE retreats with the title. (77)

With their message delivered, Dynamite and Steve stay in the ring for the first tag tournament semifinal. They're able to beat Snuka and Jones, but it takes a well-timed use of the coal miner's glove. (83) DiBiase joins them in the ring. Losing the NWA Title was a setback, and you don't get to be the Million Dollar Man by worrying about every little temporary setback! Tonight, Money and Power and Death will still come out ahead after winning the tournament! (66)

Hogan and Sheik are ready to get it on. No more running, no more tricks, no more excuses. (75) The match is pretty solid, with Hogan going over a surprisingly focused Sheik. (74) Bruno and Tully haven't been talking as much as Flair and Duggan. They don't feel they need to. They'll smash those guys, and then beat up the Williams Brothers to win the tournament. (96) The relevant match is a pure brawl, even from the normally technical Flair. Duggan winds up getting the big win. (87)

Ventura and Roberts come out for the IC Title match. Ventura is gonna beat some respect into Jake! (72) It's a good match. The champ gets a bit too cocky at the finish, and Jake is able to rally for a DDT! 1...2....3! Jake Roberts wins the IC Title! (77)

Lawler calls out Muraco. This feud is about kingship, right? Why not have a coronation after the match for the winner? Muraco's game. (84) Eighteen minutes later, Muraco puts Lawler away with the Rac Bottom. (82) Lawler begrudgingly puts a robe and crown on Muraco, and bows. (65)

The finals are upon us at last! Flair and Duggan go the distance, outlasting the Williams Brothers to win the Lou Thesz Memorial Trophy! (79) Terry Funk has a special guest tonight for the WWF Title match! He brings out his brother, Dory Funk Jr.! (63, Dory's Second Gen Star gets 69) Dory's at ringside while Terry and Hansen brawl furiously for the WWF Title. Baba and Tsuruta come out to run interference, but Dory intercepts them! Terry rolls out to help his brother, and they dispatch All Japan together. ....But Hansen's up now, and Terry returns to the ring just in time for the LARIATOOOOOO~! Hansen retains. (91) All Japan give both Funks a celebratory beatdown as we go off the air. (70)
