WWF PRESENTS G-1 CLIMAX
Friday, Week 4, October 1984

Pre-show: Style and Substance d. Snuka and Jones to retain (70) then complain about being stuck in the pre-show again. (52) (It wasn't intentional this time! I forgot to increase the PPV length.)

Lawler hosts a special edition of the King's Court, wherein he tells Flair he has no chance against the size of Andre or the cunning of Rich. Flair admits he's fighting two of the toughest guys in the biz, but he's still gonna do his best! (74) And do his best he does, in a triple threat to advance to the finals. Andre gets tangled up in the ropes, and Rich beats on him a while! But Flair sneaks up and hits a suplex....Figure Four! Andre's still stuck, and Rich has nowhere to go! He taps! Flair's on to the finals! (80)

Brisco pokes at Funk for going 0-3 in the Climax. That would normally get some sort of rise, but Funk just seems upset. (66) Ventura and Steamboat give us a quality IC Title match, with Ventura retaining with the ol' handful of tights. (80) Our other G-1 Semifinal bout is King Don Muraco against "Dynamite" Eddie Williams. Muraco is still a bit banged up from the attack on ASW, and Williams is able to secure the win. (82)

Curt Hennig is back from (I think the kayfabe excuse was) injury! Future Perfect is back, baby! (49) DVE and Duggan have a score to settle. Duggan gives a good fight, but Von Erich puts him away. (81)

Sheik tells us how Hansen is gonna retain because America (including Mexico) is hok-ptooey. (64) He'll have to go through both Santana and Sammartino, though. The unlikely pair double-teams Hansen at first, but soon turn on each other. Hansen eventually manages to coast to a win after playing them against each other. (82)

KVE is going for DiBiase's NWA Title....but won't get it. DiBiase is looking increasingly legitimate after getting a clean win here! (82) After a month, it's finally time to crown our G-1 Climax winner! Williams is going for a repeat of his inaugural victory, while Flair just wants to get SOME kind of accolade in his WWF career. Steve Williams isn't here tonight, and DiBiase is missing after his big NWA Title defense, leaving Dynamite on his own. The big man does quite a number on the Nature Boy, but Flair has much more stamina, and is able to turn it around at the end for the win! (88)

Overall: 84 SUCCESS

I'll update my spreadsheet soon, and then we'll start planning for PROXY POWER! I'm gonna run it slightly different than Lopen envisioned because I just don't have good ideas for that gimmick. >_>

Discussion topics:
-Would it be helpful to have a "current PPV card" section on the spreadsheet, or is that easy to follow?
-I kinda wanna do a gimmick again once we get to 1985- maybe we'll alternate with regular years. Would you want a prediction contest again (this time it would probably be a rolling point system to spread the prizes around a bit)? Voting on some key points? Some sort of random element?

WWF All-Star Wrestling
Wk. 1, 11/84

Pre-show: Garea d. Sharpe (48)

Steve Williams makes his in-ring debut, teaming with his brother Eddie against the Faces of Fear! FoF look good, but the Willamses (Williams'? Williae?) look better. (72) Fink explains that Proxy Power will be a bit different from last year- this time, all title matches will involve an extra person on each side! So, the singles titles will be defended in tag matches, and the tag titles will be defended in six-man action. (40)

Snuka and Jones are backstage. They are disappointed to have lost the tag titles, but this is an interesting concept that gives them a unique opportunity. Snuka wants Ventura, and Jones is going to be his partner! (65) Razor Ramon puts away Owen Hart. (50) Style and Substance are backstage with Heenan in tow. They're still tag champs, but are pissed at being bumped to the pre-show twice in a row! Meanwhile, Hennig (hello censor) gets a big fanfare just for showing up. Everybody's over the moon for Future Perfect, but Style and Substance are the champs, so respect them! (43)

Sheik puts away Atlas. (70) Funk is in a funk, but he has an idea for blowing off some steam. He's gonna beat up the next punk that walks through that door! The poor guy turns out to be Shawn Michaels. (38) Sammartino and Santana finally get to fight! Sammartino wins. (68)

Jesse Ventura is your guest on King's Court. He and Lawler just stroke each other's egos and rile up the crowd for a while. (77) We have a DEBATE tonight! Duggan and Koloff exchange typical 80s sentiments until Koloff sucker punches Duggan. Koloff's got the upper hand, but here comes...Ted DiBiase? to make the save? Odd. (68) Brisco and DVE fight for no particular reason other than a good match. DVE gets the win. (86)

Flair is here to celebrate winning the G-1 Climax! He thanks the fans and WWF and America and all that good stu- there's a guy behind him in the ring! Flair turns around...and gets levelled! We don't get a good look at the attacker until after he's given Flair the ol' ground and pound...it's TULLY BLANCHARD! (95, Tully's Old School Heel gets 86) Hansen is presumably taking Rich as his partner at Proxy Power, so the pair is in action tonight against King Muraco and KVE. Thanks primarily to experience working together, All Japan picks up the win. (83) All Japan run their mouths a bit, but are interrupted by Andre! Andre has had his shot at getting the title back, so that's not why he's out here tonight. However, he thinks he's found somebody who CAN unseat Hansen! Andre brings out....Ricky Steamboat! (95)

I kinda prefer something that isn't a straight prediction contest because I think that can kinda get in the way. Like, if you're really in the zone, you should be able to post like 5 cards in a row. But if you have a prediction contest that needs input after every show, you can't. Also as a predictor if I fall behind early it becomes kind of a slog to get em all in, so yeah it's not really my favorite way to do it. I suspect the gimmick I'm running in my diary might be too hands off (though it'll get a bit better once I actually catch up, maybe), but I do think predicting every card might be overkill--

Also boo at having no ideas for proxy power it's a great gimmick

Also I don't think current PPV card is terribly necessary. Either it's easy to follow, or it's not and you should make it easier to follow in the write-ups by having better builds-- but knowing the card isn't helping tremendously. Either way I don't think the spreadsheet is helping unless you have like a bracket or something.

I intend to do a prediction special every year for WM and end of year stuff, regardless!

Maybe we'll do more of a voting based thing then. Like, after every PPV, I give you one or two questions along the lines of what the prize would've been, and everybody gets to help decide? OR at the beginning of the year I could let you each give me a little "challenge" (like "Andre can't main event a PPV" or "Bret Hart must win a title")

Owner goals ha ha.

And yeah I think raw prediction stuff is completely fine in moderation. All at once stuff like end of the year awards and single cards, there's no issue whatsoever

I just know like, in Eaed's at least I think he moves a lot slower because he's waiting for predictions-- and I believe that was happening with you towards the end of the cycles. I think it's a fine balance between encouraging reader participation and letting said reader participation interfere with your diary's update rate (which, moving at a decent pace is what drives reader interest more than interaction, at least for me), and I don't think the traditional predictions have that balance quite right so that's why I encourage trying other things.

speaking of moving at a decent pace!!

WWF All-Star Wrestling
WK. 2, 11/84

Pre-show: Snuka/Jones d. Original Samoans (67)

Ventura opens the show. He thinks it's pretty unfair that he has to defend against an established tag team! They probably think he doesn't have any friends....but he does! Ventura introduces his tag partner for Proxy Power: Jerry Lawler! (76) Following last week's confrontation, Duggan and Koloff have a match. Duggan wins and waves a flag around. (77) Koloff staggers to his feet, and we're about to get round two when DiBiase comes out! He endorses Duggan, who won with the power of CAPITALISM. Duggan and Koloff are too confused to fight. (64)

Stevens is in the ring with Steamboat and a delegation from All Japan. The All Japan guys think Steamboat isn't good enough to fight Hansen...so Stevens books him in a gauntlet! Steamboat will fight three All Japan guys tonight, and if he beats all three, he (along with Andre) gets the shot! That's fine by All Japan, but they have a SECRET WEAPON they've been saving for a time like this! (66) The first gauntlet match is right now, but All Japan clears out of the ring. Their music hits, and out comes the debuting GENICHIRO TENRYU. He's treated like a big deal, but Steamboat beats him anyway. (70, Tenryu's Bad Ass gets 96)

Muraco doesn't yet know what he's doing for Proxy Power. Maybe he'll go for the WWF Title if Steamboat can't get it done tonight! Maybe he'll win that #1 Contendership Giveaway battle royal just for fun! Whatever it is, it'll be electrifying! (87) Future Perfect accost Style and Substance backstage. They didn't realize their existance was a problem, but they'll be happy to take those tag titles off Style and Substance! SnS agree, and both teams go forth to discuss potential third members. (50) Steamboat time again! He beats Baba, but is starting to look tired. (62)

Funk had a good time last week, so he is once again going to beat up the first guy through that door over there! This time, it's Tony Atlas, who gets in a hit or two before getting a mudhole stomped in him. (67) Steamboat's final trial is against Jumbo Tsuruta! With All Japan at ringside and fatigue starting to wear, Steamboat has a tough time of things....but eventually prevails! (73) Steamboat can't even stand up after three tough matches in a row, and that's exactly what All Japan was waiting for. Misawa and Saito join their defeated companions in swarming Steamboat...but out comes Andre! All Japan get in a few shots while Andre shambles down the ramp, but then the Giant cleans house! (56)

Hansen and Rich have been conspicuously absent from the night's shenanigans, and that's because they have been getting ready to fight the Faces of Fear! FoF fight like a seasoned tag team...but so do All Japan's aces. Hansen gets the win after a while. (75) David Von Erich comes out looking for a woman beautiful enough to capture his heart. ....But you're all uggos, so never mind. (91...he's been running a Teen Idol gimmick recently in case you forgot >_>)

New music hits, and out comes the guy from last week: Tully Blanchard. He's here to bust some heads, and where better to start than the guy who won that tournament? Flair, or whatever? He'd better watch himself, or it'll happen again. That goes for all of you. (96) Speaking of Flair, he's teaming with KVE against Eddie and Steve Williams. Steve appears to be a bit of a weak link in main-event level competition, and Flair's able to exploit that for the win. (75)

All-Star Wrestling
Wk. 3, 11/84

Pre-show: FP/Barbarian d. AKIO/Saito/Misawa (63)

Hansen and Rich are about to open the show, but Andre and Steamboat interrupt them about two sentences into the promo! No time is wasted as the four brawl up the ramp. (84) Dynamite Eddie Williams puts away Jack Brisco. (76) The B-team of All Japan is backstage, surrounding Ray Stevens. They don't like the way he's treating Hansen, what with giving Steamboat a shot and letting him bring in Andre. Stevens better watch himself. (59)

Sheik wants to team with Ventura, but gets an insincere "I'll think about it." (62) Ventura already has Lawler, and they show off their new teamwork with a win over the Harts. (64) Snuka and Jones are backstage watching the match, and aren't worried about it. (68)

Duggan calls out DiBiase, trying to figure out what's been going on. DiBiase repeats his general attitude of capitalism making America great. Duggan, in turn, supports capitalism (eww communists!!!) but what makes America great is its PEOPLE and its FREEDOM and [long list of stuff that feels better than what DiBiase said]. The Million Dollar Man doesn't get America at all! (86) DVE beats Meng. (76) DVE is still on the lookout for a fly honey (or a suitable mid-80s equivalent) but you're all still uggos! (92)

Bruno piledrives Santana backstage! (56) Flair puts on a dang clinic with newcomer Razor Ramon. Flair gets the win. (86) He doesn't know this Tully guy, but nobody messes with the Nature Boy and gets away with it! Wooo! (100) Funk is looking for another random victim. ...But he gets Muraco, who's able to fight back! They fight. (78)

Tully Blanchard faces his first real test in the WWF: Kevin Von Erich! Tully continues to look dominant, and is able to roll through KVE with surprising ease. (82) Style and Substance come out afterwards. Heenan likes what he saw here, and invites Tully to be their third man iin the tag title match! Tully's not gonna pal around with them forever, but he's game. (61)

not YET they haven't but my grasp on the top spot just got a lot more tenuous, and it's gonna be heck on my roster

A lot of my top guys also work for other NWA feds, which prevents me (or GCW, or NJPW, or whoever else) from offering them written contracts. AWA isn't in NWA, so they aren't bound by that restriction...so theoretically, they can sign as many of those guys as they want, while we're unable to offer them more than a PPA. I don't even know if it's possible to get a worker to take a PPA over a Written. >_>

All-Star Wrestling
Wk. 4, 11/84

Pre-show: Afa d. Strongbow (57)

All Japan are shoving around Stevens and getting in his face. Santana and Brisco run them off! (72) Style and Substance introduce the man who guarantees their win tomorrow night: Tully Blanchard! (64) He beats Meng in a very good match. (81) Future Perfect come out afterwards, because they have their own ace in the hole: Ric Flair! (71)

Fink interviews Razor about his lifestyle, and gets only vague answers and insults. (51) Butch Reed is back from his very short RIPW stint! He celebrates by jobbing to Bruno. (66) Albano warns us not to forget about Sika like I clearly have. (72) DVE puts away the Barbarian. (83)

Sheik runs down America some more until Duggan runs him off. (68) Duggan teams with KVE and Atlas in a losing effort against the newly expanded Money and Power and Death (now with Steve Williams!) (82) Lawler and Ventura mock Jones and Snuka, who intend to let their in-ring work do the talking. (63) Our main event is a big 8-man tag, in which Hansen/Rich/Baba/Tsuruta prevail over the slapped-together coalition of Andre/Steamboat/Santana/Brisco. (83) Funk comes out. He's figured out that he wants to fight Muraco! That'll get him back on track. Muraco is only too happy to layeth the smacketh down upon Funk's candy behind! (93)

Dave Hebner does impressions

WWF Presents Proxy Power
Thursday (for contract purposes!) Week 4, November 1984

Pre-show: Rotundo d. Fuji (42)

Muraco and Funk jabber. Funk considers this an opportunity to find himself, and Muraco just wants to electrify the crowd. (82) We got a solid but unremarkable brawl from the two, with Funk going over. (77)

Ventura and Lawler are backstage- Ventura dressed like Jones and Lawler like "Bolo." (80) Sammartino d. Atlas with no buildup. (67) Flair and Blanchard size each other up and try to intimidate each other. (92) It's time for the 20-man PROXY POWER battle royal! The winner gets a title shot...for somebody else of their choice. It comes down to DVE, Sheik, Meng, and Owen- DVE goes over Meng to win. (69) This is his second time winning! You'll have to tune in next week to see what he decides to do with it. (91)

Tag Titles time! Future Perfect (and Flair) are challenging Styles and Substance (and Tully). Flair and Tully brawl on the outside as Martel finishes off Hennig to win. (81) Ray Stevens doesn't want All Japan interfering in the main event tonight. They agree...but it's gonna cost Stevens. The b-team beat him up and put him through a table! (45)

IC Title! Snuka (and Jones) challenging Ventura (and Lawler). Snuka and Jones have a definite team experience advantage, but the heels are proficient cheaters! Ventura retains after a long string of heel tactics. (76) Fink informs us that Stevens has been rushed to the hospital. (59)

Money in Power are in action to defend DiBiase's NWA Title against Duggan (and KVE)! The heels are a lot craftier in addition to being a well-oiled team, and DiBiase is able to submit KVE with the Million Dollar Dream. (84) KVE gets a lariat and a dollar bill in his mouth anyway. (92)

Our main event is Steamboat (and Andre) challenging Hansen (and Rich) for the WWF Title! Steamboat holds his own very well in a crazy brawl. The proxies brawl up the ramp.....Rich tackles Andre off the stage and through some tables! Neither is really moving, and Steamboat is concerned...opening him up to a LARIATOOOOOO~! 1....2.....3! Hansen retains! (87) He and his minions will do ANYTHING to keep this title, and Andre should've known better than to get in the way. (96)

Overall: 88 SUCCESS

All-Star Wrestling
Wk. 1, 12/84

Pre-show: Atlas d. Patterson (59)

Gorilla Monsoon opens us up for some reason! There are quite a few big things happening in WWF recently, not the least of which is a shakeup to the announce team! (He gestures over to the amazing team of Vince, Alfred, and Grand Wizard) Ray Stevens is no longer physically able to be present after All Japan's attack, so there will be a new GM coming soon! The Lou Thesz Memorial Tag Tournament is coming! But perhaps most importantly, tomorrow night is the debut of....THURSDAY NIGHT RAW! It's gonna be a happening! (76)

Sheiky feels that these American pigs have been giving him no respect. He gets looked over, even though he can beat any stupid American back there! He'll make his point by beating anybody who wants to face him!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2OR6Kjo5m4

(79, Hulkamania gets 100) A match ensues. Hogan hits most of his spots, and then Sheik runs away for a countout. (76)

Snuka and Jones are bummed that they are still title-less, but it's time to focus on the tag tournament! (61) Bruno puts down Meng. (68) As tag champions (still!), Style and Substance are entitled to a title shot in lieu of competing in the tournament! Maybe we'll get Schultz vs. Hansen! Or Martel vs. DiBiase! Or maybe Heenan will even climb in the ring! Only they know for sure! (53) Lawler beats Brisco. (70)

Funk is still contemplating his ennui. Beating Muraco was fun, but didn't help. (84) We get a barnburner in which Tully goes over Steamboat! (87) We see a vignette where Jesse Ventura is hard at work in the recording studio. Having concluded, he reaches for his boa....and finds a snake instead! He freaks out a bit. (76)

Flair is your G-1 Champion! wOOOOO (92) He stays in the ring for the main event: Flair/Muraco/Duggan vs. Money and Power and Death (which is what you call it when Steve Williams is added). Faces go over in a hot match. (89) DVE is in the ring to talk about what he's doing with his Proxy Power! He hasn't quite decided yet! Hansen comes out. DVE won this thing last year, and he did the right thing (at the time) by giving it to then-champion and then-All Japan member Terry Funk. It'd be the right thing to do that again. DVE thinks about it, and then tells Hansen no! He's tired of All Japan acting like they run the place, and they've really gone downhill lately. He's done with 'em. (96, face turn went poorly because too many shock turns)

Overall: 90 SUCCESS

WWF Thursday Night Raw DEBUT SHOW!
Wk. 1, 12/84

Pre-show: Atlas d. Edwards (55)

Vince McMahon Jr. is here to hype us up for tonight's historic event! (Your announce team for Raw, BTW, is Monsoon/Grand Wizard/Arn.) He's interrupted by Bobby Heenan trying to sneak in without a ticket! He can't do that- it's sold out! (73) Anyway we're also starting the Thesz Tag Tournament! Flair and Duggan defeat Baba and Tsuruta for AMERICA. (74) Snuka is fighting Tully tonight. Jones hypes up his buddy. (57)

IC Title action! Ventura retains over Butch Reed. (79) Ventura reminds us that he is a successful recording artist. We saw somebody play a mean prank on him last night. It's not funny! He's deathly afraid of snakes! Whoever is responsible is gonna get his. (90)

Style and Substance are bringing a comely looking lady backstage. It turns out to be Heenan in a wig! SnS want to know what Heenan's grand plan was that was so important that they had to smuggle him into the arena. Nothing! He just wanted to be near the action! (58) Hansen and Tenryu of All Japan prevail over Faces of Fear, thanks mostly to the tenacity of the WWF Champ. (79)

Tully Blanchard and Bruno Sammartino are entering the tag tournament together! Everybody else best watch out for them! (91) Blanchard then proceeds to work over Snuka. (82) Muraco is the guest on the King's Court tonight! Lawler asks him about being King of the Ring, then sucker punches him and declares himself the REAL King in the WWF! (66)

Hulk Hogan introduces himself to the crowd. He fumbles over his promo but it is still very exciting because he is RUNNING WILD (86) Main eventing tonight is a solid match between Funk and Steamboat. Funk wrestles a bit cleaner than usual and still picks up the W. (78) DVE is in the ring with his Proxy Power contract! Before he can announce anything, he's interrupted by Money and Power. They respect him for standing up to Hansen. DiBiase tries to buy the contract! DVE tells him NO WAY. Williams grabs for DVE, but he's too quick, and escapes to the outside! (95)
