The really great Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is hitting consoles. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, from the Heaven's Sword and Enslaved peoples, comes out in early August as well, on the same day that LawBreakers, the shooter from Cliffy B comes out. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 hits on consoles, Tacoma, Hello Neghbor, Agents of Mayhem, Sonic Mania, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, MADDEN 18, F1 2017, Yakuza Kiwami, Everybody's Golf, Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!, and XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Absolver are all coming in August. So is Culdcept: Revolt for the 3DS!

Then you've got Destiny 2, NHL 18, Dishonored DLC and a bunch of other stuff not long after that!

I've heard so many comments about the Nier ending. people always seem kind of so-so until they hit the true end. people always say "wait for the ending for it to really hit".

Automata is an experience that continuously gets more engrossing the more you learn about the world and what's going on. It starts out good and every part makes the previous parts retroactively better. And it's not so much the ending as the last 1/3 of the game kicks it into high gear.

No, you don't NEED to play the original Nier. Mostly anything from the original game that appears in Automata is explained well enough (then again, as someone who did play Nier maybe I'm not the best judge for well things are explained to new players). I think there are also some story beats that will be more of a surprise to new players.

i think nier: automata is one of those rough gems where the gameplay is clearly subordinate to the writing. it gets the job done to make some very powerful points about purpose, but i'd be lying if i said i found most of the actual playing itself to be super engaging. none of the actual quest design, and i use that because it is an "open world" game, is structurally interesting. just about every single one of them is either a fetch quest or kill waves of enemies. i pushed through anyway and cleared 80% of the sidequests simply because the writing was compelling enough.

there are definitely moments of video game brilliance in that it uses the medium to express its themes.

also, i played it without zero knowledge of the first nier and didn't have any trouble following the story.

i think there's some merit to just bee-lining the main quest and maybe turning the difficulty down to easy for the least tedium and to experience the big story beats. personally though, doing a bunch of the sidequests added texture to the world and reinforced the overall messages of the game. if you don't have 35+ hours in your life and the patience to do a lot of fetch quests, then sure, just stick to the main quest.

Given the hype from a few users who have similar tastes to mine, I expect this to be even better than Yakuza 0 and Persona 5.

Meh, you'll just disagree, but ok:

His design and look firstly isn't good compared to how striking Emil/Kaine/Weiss are, that already puts a bad first impression, since I'm going to be playing as him for 20+ hours.

He plays the straight man in the interactions and compared to their quirky personalities he comes off as rather bland. There are a number of straight man type characters who work the comic aspect well, with Nier the light hearted moments aren't really all that frequent. So we're mostly playing as Mr. Frowny face with little release of tension.

His character arc isn't very interesting compared to the rest of your party. It's not what I would call generic, but as he is only thinking of one thing throughout the game it doesn't allow for much of his character to actually develop.

A number of characters I like, hey take Kiryu another usually frowny type of guy. He spends a lot of his story arcs learning and finding out about new things that can change his perspective or lead to him fighting for a number of different causes, because through the story they became something of value to him.

With Nier, he'll just show some anger at Emil and Kaine not being allowed into the village, but that's about it. The game never really sees him take their up their causes. These characters at least through the first 2 games, mostly sort their own shit out. A lot of games I like have the MC work with a party member to sort an issue, I like it, it builds this strong bond of sort. But since those two aren't part of the village, it ends up feeling like they're building bonds away from you the Main character. This means I don't really feel like Nier has as strong a relationship with his party, as they do with each other.

So as a fan of the other characters, the story driving him on a trail of revenge that gets everyone else killed or badly injured just makes him less likeable. The game invests a lot of time into making even shades somewhat sympathetic, so you end up feeling like you're playing as a villain. Ok, you can do that in many games, but here your end goal is saving a cute little girl, but you're going about it by being an evil dick.

That might be the point sure, but that doesn't have to make him likeable either.

It's not even like he's unaware that he's being a dick either. This makes him more of a one note protagonist, so if that doesn't connect with you in a meaningful way, there's nothing to enjoy. Even if the character redeems himself at the end by realising he was blinded by his motivation, by then it's too late. You've invested so much time playing as a douche, that its not enough.

Sure he's not as bad as Kratos (I only watched the GoW cutscenes, so I think I got the plot down there at least)


But yeah, sure you sound like you thought Nier was cool enough, I don't, different strokes n all that.

I'm working my way through ending C, looking forward to the improved PG gameplay.

His refusal to ever see things from the Shadowlord's perspective even when it is so close to his own shows the kind of guy he is. I do put Neir in the same places as Joel from the last of us, in that they are good characters but not likable people and in some places you don't want them to succeed.

I liked the sidequests in Automata a lot. The writing in them is fantastic and they expand the world and its themes by quite a bit. I consider them almost as important as the main story itself.

In terms of pure game design, they're mostly fetch quest-y but that also describes 99% of sidequests in existence so it didn't bug me.


DadNier is a very good character. He has one sympathetic driving goal that he jumps down a rabbit hole of near-insanity to achieve, sacrificing everything and everyone along the way to try and achieve it. And unlike someone like Kratos, he does so while feeling like a real human being instead of a parody. I think if you're looking for him to be a strictly likable character, you're not going to find what you want, but as a compelling character who helps make the story work, he ticks all the right boxes.

Yeah Nier was basically Joel's predecessor. And the predecessor to a lot of recent video games with dads as the main character, actually.

Yeah, see I really do like the story. The story beats are great and in some ways, I do agree that in took an interesting direction in the depiction of its main character to drive the whole thing forward.

I just feel it's a shame you couldn't produce a more likeable main character to fit within such a solid story. I mean, if it wasn't for the plot, I wouldn't play this. The music is great, but I can listen to that anytime and anywhere.

With something like say film, just to pick an example. American Psycho, you're spending at most a couple of hours with what is a horrible main character (as a person), but he is very likeable in the context of the film.

With videogames, my expectactions do change, because of the time I'll be investing and the interactive element to the whole thing. A unlikeable main character won't stop me from liking the game either. Like over the years, I grew to like Tommy Vercetti less and less, especially compared to CJ and and even Niko Bellic. But the game itself is fantastic.
