i guess it doesn't help that basically all the first person shooters i've played in the past year push you to keep moving and give you plenty of mobility. whether it's doom, titanfall 2, or even overwatch, i was never just staying put and peeking out of cover to kill enemies. maybe i'm just not so good at this game, but i'm just not really digging the actual shooting here. weapons aren't that interesting either.

it's a style preference for sure. you're right in that it's slower, more methodical, at least compared to other recent FPS games. it's a lot like Half-Life in a sense. I don't agree that the weapons aren't interesting though, you're crazy! if you can't have fun dual wielding shotguns why are you even playing video games =)

I dunno if you had plans on The Old Blood, but there's a lot more stealth and a less interesting story. I liked it, but TNO is also one of my favourite FPSers ever, so.

I played a bit more of Game of Thrones last night. I finished episode 2. I continue to go into that game with low expectations and walk away modestly impressed. I'm still having a hard time getting to know these characters, which is kind of a unique problem for TT games. Either I go into a series knowing who these people are already, or a handful of characters have such a presence on screen that I gel with them immediately. It's much easier to identify the House Forrester plight, which might be the intent.

One area this game excels in is its use of dramatic irony. There were 4 perspectives I played from in the last episode, all from House Forrester, but all four are set in different parts of Westeros. All four characters are working towards a common goal, but there are competing interests in play, and the characters don't communicate with each other. It's neat stuff.

GoT is at its worst in the middle chapters, where it feels like they're stretching a 5-episode story thin to make it 6 episodes for whatever reason. as a whole, I think it's totally fine, if unimpressive. especially compared to telltale's other games.

in other news, windjammers is out on august 29th.

There's a lot of ways to add friends on the Switch now - 3DS/Wii U, their mobile games, Twitter/Facebook. but yeah, it's weird that FC is still the primary way to add people if you don't have them on another service.

season 2 didn't have Gabe or characters wildly overreacting to easily rectifiable situations. there were far too many contrived conflicts in ANF. Joan rubbed me the wrong way too - it's an archetype TT used in S2 and Michonne to much greater effect, and concluded in each.

the end of ANF was great though. that teaser for the next season was maybe my favourite part of the game.

season 3's decisions are way more organic than I expected. for all the consistent complaints that TT got about decisions not mattering - which I never agreed with, but whatever - they finally went and made something truly branching and nobody cared. oh well.

Gabe didn't really bug me at all, but even if he did, he's no worse than Ben and season 1 is a masterpiece.

edit: and if you want to talk about overreacting to situations, what's up s2 ending

edit 2: I liked season 2 a good bit, by the way

Ben has nothing on Gabe. the fracturing of the group when Gabe reveals one of your early choices, and the fallout from that scene, is one of the low points in any recent TT game. just character after character acting against both self-interest and motivation for no other reason than to advance the plot and set-up a no-win scenario later on.

TWD S2's endings are among its best traits. A natural conclusion to in-group tension, influenced by both choices and emotion.

the whole game actually gave me a half-life kinda vibe, which happens to be one of my favorite shooters. the original, at least. j will concede that dual wielding shotguns feels good, but that doesn't make the weapons themselves interesting! it's really just the laser that stands out, and the cutting mode is disappointingly useless in combat.

i haven't read any glowing recommendations for the old blood, and yours isn't doing much for me either! unless it somehow becomes important in understanding the new colossus, i don't think i'll be getting it.

for what it's worth, i totally spilled paint on victoria.

got through the first hour of nioh. game is dark. literally. demon's souls-esque. died twice but only at the very beginning when i was still getting a hang of the controls and insisted on kicking the first enemy to death with my bare feet!

action mode is a good thing for this kind of game. will check out how movie mode looks. played all of the souls games on console so i'm fine with 30fps too.

beat the first real mission in nioh. getting through the level wasn't too hard, but man those oni and that boss weren't fucking around. the stances, the ki pulse, and the skills to chain combos make me want to experiment and get good at using those, but getting killed in 2-3 hits over and over again also makes me want to play it safe against anything that isn't a regular enemy. so many systems too with the inventory. kind of overwhelming, but i already feel myself getting drawn into the whole thing anyway.

i will probably lose myself into mastering this 60+ hour game.

I forgot that most of the bosses and hunts in FF12 have this weird berserk state once they get to a certain HP threshold. It's kind of annoying and makes you want to just use a quickening chain right before they hit that threshold, but then you have to sit through 10 minutes of quickenings.

after spending an hour and a half to fully explore the level in the ocean roars again (lighting all 3 fires), it was only after i beat the boss that i learn how those fires can buff your weapon.

i mean the boss itself wasn't that hard in retrospect, but those instakill ledges made me not want to get anywhere close to the edges of the stage!

anyway, i'm still enjoying my time with nioh. getting that familiar feeling of dread and adrenaline, which is great. nothing about the story or the world is compelling me though, but fuck it playing it is just fun.

pyre is out tomorrow! eurogamer says it's essential. i thought bastion was pretty and had great music, but that was it. never played transistor. psn has its preorder price at 17.99, and i happen to have $18 in my psn wallet thanks to that 15 for 100 promo last month. game will be 19.99 by tomorrow. hmmmmm

I liked Bastion and I liked Transistor, but I didn't love them. I think this USGamer review by Caty McCarthy makes some points that hit close to home:
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/pyre-review

I only wish those hopes were front-and-center. Instead, characters fit their specific molds, and hardly grow beyond them. They're sidelined by another purpose, a nebulous "Plan" concocted by the wise Volfred. Volfred's insistence on the "Plan"—that is liberating every party member one by one through the Liberation Rite and hatching a plan of quiet, civil rebellion in Commonwealth—overshadows everything else in the game. The Plan becomes the sole focus, when all I really wanted to know was what these characters had to go back to, why they were banished in the first place, and why they opted to go along with this plan at all. Instead, that info is buried in character biographies and quick conversations that would pop up randomly in our communal wagon. And even those of substance were few and far in between.

As I played through Pyre, I felt as if I wanted to like it more than I did. Its characters were wonderfully unique, but I never felt like I got to know them beyond the fleeting conversations we'd share in the confines of the wagon. When there was a rift between two characters, to the point where they wouldn't battle alongside each other (thus causing me minor annoyance), I wished for more scenarios like it. We all shared a common goal of attaining freedom and doing our darndest to rebel on the outside, but we hardly talked as to why, or even butt heads about it. As the game scaled upwards of a dozen hours, I was surprised at how little that time was spent getting to personally know my exiled companions.

Pyre's a complicated game, one that I loved in moments and felt bored stiff in others. It begins faltering when it hits its formulaic methods in the mid-to-late game: where you embark on three pyre battles, do a Liberation Rite, rinse repeat. In a stranger sense, it effectively works against what we expect in RPGs. Instead of growing stronger over time, you're growing weaker: you're slowly but surely casting off your exiled friends to "freedom," but losing them on a personal level in the process. Your win-state, instead of leveling up, is tethered to losing combatants at your side. Whereas in the twisted lose-state, you keep them alongside you, but as a result your eventual revolution up in Commonwealth grows more and more unlikely. The lose state may be better in the moment to moment, but in reality, it's amounting to a probable bad end.

idk i'm not sure if it will be cheaper in a couple months. i mean there's always possibility for something on black friday/cyber monday, but horizon and yakuza seem like the two games from early this year that aren't dropping quick like the rest of them, 30 may be the non-black friday floor for another year

No, each character has 3 specific quickenings unique to them. Learn them as soon as you want.
