Really fucking disturbing. The expert consensus is that North Korea's test launch indicates that they have the capability of striking the US (albeit only Alaska).

Apparently the guy who made the trump-cnn gif broke down and apologized, called trolling an addiction and that he was just trying to get lulz however he could.

http://archive.is/CAzzg

for what it's worth, the reason for the running theory that he shut up due to blackmail is because you had a CNN journo outright say they contacted him before the apology.

https://twitter.com/KFILE/status/882407128962650113
This apology came after CNN identified and reached out to HanAssholeSolo. Story and interview w/him posting soon

he also in a later tweet gets into how they doxed the guy but said they weren't revealing his identity. it also got into lawyer-ese here in this one:

https://twitter.com/KFILE/status/882418323673239553
"HanAssholeSolo" posted his apology before we *ever* spoke him. He called us afterwards to apologize further.

see, CNN didn't speak to him at that point.
they just had someone email him and wanted to speak to him.

...so yeah, they just had his dox, told people how to find his dox, and contacted him directly through that, but they weren't releasing the info, threatening him, and he just happened to give a massive apology as he then proceeded to delete everything.

edit:
oh yeah, they outright admit that they tried to contact him via email and phone. meaning they had his phone number already too.

Yeap, that's not doxxing by any means. Doxxing is the publication of the information, discovering the information to begin with isn't an issue, that's largely on you.

Now if you've got CNN talking to his family or people that know him you can start making a case.

I'm honestly confused by Wang being on the doxxer crusade here what with actual doxxing being GG's and Milo's bread and butter!

mmm... the difference comes in the specific language there i think. lemme explain: it would be fair to say that CNN has his dox (the identifying information) but they aren't doxing him (publishing it). it gets weird if you want to say "CNN doxed him!" since like you said, they haven't published the data, though considering they did contact him through phone and email i think most would find that as scummy enough to count anyway, even if it's not a proper usage of the word.

quite the opposite, most in GG didn't support doxing at all, it was banned on /v/, KIA, the three main 8chan GG boards, and the places that did that sort of thing (e.g., baph) either hated GG or liked it solely because it let them fly under the radar entirely as they shit on both sides. there were far more people in GG who got doxed than anyone on any opposing sides.

So a news organization tried to contact someone involved in a story and people are going to go straight to bullying and blackmail? I guess the idea that the gif creator panicked after something he thought was just stupid fun became a huge deal is just too absurd.

if they simply wanted to talk to him they could've stopped at just seeing who made the gif - reddit has a PM system. just use that. no need to get his name, number, and personal email. that's where they crossed the line and why plenty of people immediately jump to blackmail, it ain't just the donald there. the circumstances just make CNN look ridiculously petty.

I dunno, it all sounds pretty unlikely

If they did, in fact, threaten him, then CNN is absolutely in the wrong

I just don't see any reason to assume this to be true. Finding out his information is a thing you'd expect a news outlet to do if they were trying to look into him more, since you'd assume they'd look to see if his views on reddit were reflected on his Twitter, Facebook, etc. Contacting him is also something you'd expect a news outlet to do.

I'm not saying no threats occurred. Just that, at this time, I don't see anything outright saying they did.

yeah, there's a difference there.
really it's just the past tense usage that gets screwy.

dox by itself - just the info, simple.
doxing - releasing the info, also simple.
doxed - you might be referring to either one.

the grammar rules are not thought of too well here.

The blackmail/bullying thing doesn't really fit with him deleting all of his posts.

bear in mind that the same CNN rep who contacted him ALSO said that the way they found him was through his reddit posts.

publicly, on twitter.
https://twitter.com/KFILE/status/882410764463681540
CNN discovered HanAssholeSolo's identity through bits of biographical data left on his Reddit.

the timeline checks too. straight from the article written:
On Monday, KFile attempted to contact the man by email and phone but he did not respond. On Tuesday, "HanA**holeSolo" posted his apology on the subreddit /The_Donald and deleted all of his other posts.

but one thing in the article is really fucked up:
CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

that bold right there, mixed with the paragraph directly above it, sound a lot like them saying "if you stop being a good boy we might publish it."

"Reserve the right" does not mean "we absolutely will do this". And yes, of course they're going to seek out the original creator of the gif. Same as how the creator of anything on the web has their name sought out. That really is standard. The issue is the statement, which reads as blackmail only if you choose that interpretation.

That said, they could do without even the possibility of that interpretation so it's pretty bad wording

It doesnt matter how many more have been created since then because the president didnt use those to attack a news organization he doesnt like. Trump using it made it the center of attention and people are going to dig into every angle they can to get more details for their story. So yes there is a reason to contact him and the phone or email are better suited for that than a pm on reddit. It is amazing that contacting someone to try and get their side of the story is now somehow bullying, blackmail, or extortion.

I think the issue here is more the statement by CNN with that "reserve the right" thing. I actually do see what the problem is there even if I disagree.

Seeking out this guy's name is absolutely normal though. I'm sure other outlets did the same, unless you think CNN shouldn't have gotten involved because they were part of the story, which I don't buy.

he made a wrestling edit. plenty of those around. the story's not about the creator at all and there's plenty more that have been made ever since with Trump and CNN.

but the story reads as the news organization he edited getting beat proceeded to find who made the gif, dig into all his posts on reddit, identify who he was, get his phone number, his email, contacted him on both, and then he happens to make an apology post and deletes everything.

if they simply wanted to talk to him they could've stopped at just seeing who made the gif - reddit has a PM system. just use that. no need to get his name, number, and personal email. that's where they crossed the line and why plenty of people immediately jump to blackmail, it ain't just the donald there. the circumstances just make CNN look ridiculously petty.

It is amazing saying you won't release their public information cuz they are doing what you want but you may do so if that should change is being defended by anyone. But, surprise surprise... the literal left is defending the literal left news agency. The twitter world is going nuts over it on both sides. But not our resident ultra liberals. Its just so blatant that its hard to take you serious.

If it is a kid, I would expect a lawsuit from a smart family. CNN just comes off so badly here.
