Jon and Theon is the only one that has bugged me so far. I really feel like we should have seen more out of these two meeting again. They were raised practically as brothers, and Theon massively betrayed his family. Jon should have been way more upset about this.

I guess the logic would be that just as he "doesn't have time" for romance with Dany, he doesn't have time for personal issues with Theon that are well in the past.

Daenerys will compel Jon to find the time for heart-staring... when he bends the knee.

I love how heavily she echoed Jon's speech about pride that he used on Mance and later Tormund. Beautifully done; Harington definitely knew what to do there, because Jon clearly recognized those words.

Yeah it would have been cliched beyond belief if like Tyrion and Varys had walked in at that point to tell them about Highgarden, but the fact that it was her own pride (or ego, or whatever you want to call it) that broke the moment somewhat was a bit better.

during the wagon train scenes I started to have this weird appreciation for the fact that Sam's family members are getting more focus. not sure why. I'm not even a giant fan of the Sam character but it's always cool to see the different families expanding. similar feeling to when you realize that LC Mormont was Jorah's father, or that Lyanna Mormont is his uhh.... I have no idea. cousin, probably. maybe niece. Gives a sense that this is actually a large feudal world with familial power structures ingrained as political units rather than just being like one person on each throne and leading giant faceless armies with main characters at the head of them. world building, I guess.

I didn't take as much note of this but I enjoyed reading this, and I do agree. I love that in the books, we get to meet Waymar Royce in the first chapter and then we find out that this badass Bronze Yohn was buddy-buddy with Waymar.

I watched this episode twice and the cave scene is the only scene I skipped the second time. just want to mention I thought it was so hilarious when emilia clarke did the thing where she would say a line to Jon snow and then take a step or two closer each time till they got really close. ha ha ha just what. this is like a parody of forced romance you'd see them lampshade in Community or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or something. can't believe we actually saw it on display, played completely straight here. based on the "Behind The Scenes" talk the showrunners explicitly mentioned that Jon and Dany were starting to feel attraction to each other so we can already safely say where this storyline is heading. welp.

I really liked that scene in total. It's convenient, but it makes total sense that there would be carvings there since y'know, this is literally where they mined dragonglass to fight White Walkers. But as for the romantic aspect, it seemed actually organic, and I thought the actors had really nice chemistry here!

Jon/Tyrion (to a lesser extent) talking Dany down was good. I agree it's very unlikely she'll go full villain, though that would be more interesting, and we're far more likely to see a plot where her romance with Jon is used to humanize her and keep her on the good side. best case scenario she'll learn that her past strategy of blowing everything up is not morally righteous in cases where the opposing force is made up of non cartoon villains.

I really hope she gets to face some human enemies, then. Cersei is more human in the show than she is in the books, actually, but at this point she's so far gone that she might as well be a slaver. She's arguably worse.

Winterfell stuff was fine this week. It's kind of odd how long many people have waited for a Stark reunion or to see Starks in Winterfell again but I feel like none of the material we've gotten has REALLY lived up to those expectations? Anyone else feel that way? I dunno. the Winterfell stuff each week always just feels like it's sort of there.

It's been really meh to me, too. I understand why character-wise the reunions have been dead- and awkward-feeling, but it's not satisfying TV. Fanservice-wise, I'd rather have genuine happy chemistry in Winterfell than Battle of the Bastards with LF saving the day.

Jon should have beat the piss out of Theon. that confrontation was nothing. disappointing, honestly.

I do want to talk about this scene, because I think the script really let the actors down. Jon's face here is the exact same as when Rickon ran toward him, and the directing reminded me a lot of it, too. Brilliant decision IMO.

Meanwhile, Theon is as 'Theon'-ish as we've seen him since Season 2. When he sees Jon it's like he forgets about the last four years of misery, and it's kind of hilarious but also super-genuine and well-acted. I wanted more, too.

I think he is, hands down. The only other two living contenders are Jaime and Tyrion, but they both kinda sucked when their material sucked (S5 for Jaime, S6 for Tyrion). Theon's Reek storyline was worse than either of theirs at any point, but he was always knocking it out of the park.

Other contenders would've been Ned, Tywin, and Oberyn, but they obviously had shorter runs on the show. Those dudes never had a down scene.

Charles Dance is the runaway winner for me. Dude was straight-up imperious.

I'd like to throw Liam Cunningham's hat into the ring also. He'd definitely be in my top 5.

I feel like Dinklage is a little bit overrated. He's great, but not the best on the show - and he was seen as the best in S2 (I think?) where his character was magnetic and richly likeable at a time nobody in KL was at all. That's as much down to writing, editing and circumstance as it is his own performance (which was still good, don't get me wrong). And the trial speech is a great moment for the show, but I found it a bit hammy on his part sometimes, and yet I think it's held up as one of his best acting moments by some.

And having said that I'm now going to completely contradict myself by saying Dianna Rigg - who was blessed by her writing even more than Dinklage was - was also one of the best on the show >_>

Top 5 probably Liam Cunningham, Diana Rigg, Charles Dance, Alfie Allen, and maybe Stephen Dillane or Lena Headey. Dinklage would still be top 10. Pedro Pascal was a scene-stealer and was genuinely terrific but his run was a bit too limited to put in the highest tier of a show with some amazing performances. Same with Sean Bean.

He was mostly excellent. There were a couple of times I thought he was a little bit over the top to the point it became almost campy/pantomime-ish. But yeah, he was great.

Who's the worst? I almost feel like it has to be Aiden Gillen and he's still pretty good. I just can't deal with the ridiculous changes in his accent. Clarke has her faults, but they're nitpicks compared to "this guy sounds like he's from completely different places episode to episode".

yeah imma stop circle-jerking now, but basically, i think that a lot of the best actors' roles diminished a lot starting with late-S4, which is one of the huge reasons that S5-7 have been weaker. again, my example i cited last week was the tywin/olenna negotiation from S3 versus a dan/jony negotiation in 7x03. there's just no comparison in terms of watchability!

Criminally underrated; she's so underappreciated because she wrecks face selflessly, never hesitates to do the right thing, loses literally everyone except Daddy Howland now that Bran "died in that cave", and just marches on

Plus I think her actress is legit good. Her breakdown at the start of 6x06 when she was just too exhausted to continue really hit me

Mind you, I say top 10 and it may be closer like top 15. But yeah, I like her a lot!

I could be wrong here, and I don't know the books, but there's a weird amount of good/evil discussion surrounding our main characters given how grey the whole story has been. I don't expect it to be as tidy as a lot of people make it sound, like jon/dany/jaime vs. the white walkers as if it's some final boss in a jrpg. I'd just as soon see everyone dead except for like sam who eulogizes about the whole thing and arya who just continues to kill everyone she can find.

I'm just going by what I think this show has become, now that it has split from the books, which is basically an anime/jrpg. I would be highly impressed if they go with a more avant garde resolution to the story, but I'm not putting my expectations that high. Worst case I'll be pleasantly surprised.
