i don't have a problem with saying a white nationalist is "not technically a nazi." they're not the same thing and pointing out the difference is fine. obviously this argument shouldn't be used as a defense of white nationalists, though.

also, wang may be too lenient in taking the words of white nationalists/alt right people/etc. at face value. like i said, he declared that spencer isn't a nazi because "he said he isn't one." uh... ok? does that automatically close the case? bannon once said he's a leninist - should we run with that too and ignore everything else he's said and done? i'm not saying spencer IS a nazi, but i'd like to see some more compelling evidence than "he said he isn't a nazi once" before i'm 100% convinced he ISN'T one.

What worries me is not just that Wang says white supremacist views have a right to exist, he explicitly said that they SHOULD exist

He's also never once given a reason why silencing hate speech is bad beyond "it could lead to other bad things."

Hate speech being allowed to propegate doesn't just lead to other bad things, it IS a bad thing. It makes society worse in and of itself by its mere existence.

Well, traditionally skinhead wasn't synonymous with white supremacist. It still isn't really, but as I recall it got painted as such in a tabloid moral panic which wound up attracting neo-nazis to what had originally been a far-right fringe. That side grew and continued getting more attention.

But skinheads were originally just a punk/ska thing without a cohesive political doctrine aside from being Marxist.

At first they played Dead Kennedy's Nazi Punks fuck off really loudly on their ghetto blaster. When he didn't move after being asked to, they put the song back on and that was the sound track to his arse kicking.

Was quite a moment.

I know the statement sounds ridiculous, but it's quite possible that she had no idea of the extent to which her son was fucked up and is having a hard time processing that information. It's certainly possible that she's a bad person too who raised him to be like this, but until we see any real evidence of that I'd give her the benefit of the doubt. If she didn't know, suddenly finding out that your kid is a white supremacist that just murdered someone is not going to be something you instantly come to terms with and give totally rational answers to the reporter that's telling you about it.

Yeah, you're both right but the far right faction still uses that stuff, and the idea of Nazis listening to ska tickles me for some reason.

It's a fair concern, but in the case of Wang it would be irresponsible not to call him out, because he does this repeatedly. It's not so hard for him to come out and say "white supremacist movements are bad". So he should come out and say it.
