Showering them with "you're so courageous" when they waited a decade is not fine. Especially since he could have struck again i that time. I don't blame them, I couldn't command someone to tell their story. But they aren't magically courageous when they finally do.

I was robbed at gunpoint right outside my university when I was a teaching assistant. I had been carrying the exams since I wanted to spend that day in campus going over them. The professor said my story was highly convenient and fired me. The head professor of the department, who had recommended me for the position, shunned me and never talked to me again (I tried to keep the relationship and asked him for coffee at least a couple times). I could never be hired again as a teaching assistant because of my records.

It sucked a lot tbh.

I also think a major problem with sexual harassment/assault (not rape, everytime I've seen someone be accused of that, even when they're innocent their lives are never the same afterwards) is that there's a huge amount of cognitive dissonance between accepting someone was made to feel like shit, and that someone you know did it.

This is part of why I've disliked a lot of the extreme side of feminism's attempts at handling it, because it's alright saying "well if you don't do that don't feel attacked" and in the same breath hypocritically calling out all men for being a part of the problem.

It harks back to the ad hominem argument from earlier where each side recognises there's a problem (one way more than the other admittedly) but if you're on one side of the argument you're already seen as the villain.

There is still courage there. This might sound unbelievable to you, but there are some people out there that have no empathy towards other people and are actually criticizing her for the way she came out about this! Saying she didn't do it right, with the sort of implication that she is either making it up to be trendy or is at fault for not reacting the way they think she should have reacted.

I know it is shocking, but certain people are criticizing her or mocking her experience, and it takes courage to say something when you know people out there are going to come after you because they don't think you handled one of the worst moments of your life right.
