In fairness I think when I was confused I was actually thinking of promo material from a completely different show. (As opposed to being confused over what type of show Made in Abyss was presenting itself to be)

When I first read what it was about, I assume the abyss was just some deep chasm and it would be about fun exploration. The first few episodes weren't too bad either! Then... yeah.

I've finished MiA now, too. I thought bleeding from every orifice would be the pinnacle but then the whole backstory for Mitty happened.

Apparently there's going to be another season at some point, and that's great. I need more!

My overall thoughts on Made in Abyss relied very heavily on whether it would get another season, so good thing that news came out.

I was quite happy with the ending even if it didn't get another season.

Especially since it looks like Bondrewd is next and I'm not generally a fan of humans are the real monsters.

It's reminding me a lot of Noein right now (ep. 4), except less sci-fi and more fantasy.

Also it's much better than Noein, which I thought was really good conceptually, but was not actually executed that well in some respects.

Yeah in the end this is pretty close to my views of Noein. I did at least watch the whole thing but I wasn't a huge fan. Honestly that show is really a shame because in my head there's an enormous disparity between how good its ideas were (really effing good) and how good the show actually ended being (okay I guess). But oh well.

Was mainly thinking of thematic and aesthetic comparisons between that and LotL rather than comparisons of quality.

I would also like to reiterate how amazing it is to me how good the show looks. Not only is it the first CG anime I've ever actually thought looked great, it works BETTER as CG than it would have otherwise.

Not that I think the original attempt looks bad (oddly enough looks more like Noein <_<), but CG is very clearly a better way to do this series with it's aesthetic and general feel. Couldn't imagine it being as good the other way.

Well, I finished Love Live (including the movie, was surprised to find it available on Steam of all places) Season two was a lot better than the first one and the movie had some good moments too.

Season Two: I finally got my hype idol tournament arc! A-RISE being friendly wasn't what I was expecting but I appreciated it. It meant the show never descended back into drama-town. Instead they all just interacted with each other in cute ways and sang fun songs. I also appreciated the character-focused episodes, they solidified my love for Nico/Rin and helped save my opinion of Nozomi. My only real complaint is they went too far with 'we're breaking up and it's so sad'. Multiple times they said it was the last time all nine of them would be together and I'm like... you can stay friends, can't you? Also one of the best parts of season two was the brief scene where they all tried to act like someone else in the group! Those girls know each other so well.

Movie: The movie was still fun and still had good songs but was more of a mixed bag. Did they get English voice actors for the New York scenes? None of those people spoke naturally. Also everyone was WAY too polite for that to be New York (though I guess the one seemingly magical girl gets a pass on that. I'm still not sure what her deal was). I did find it funny when Hanayo's rice cravings forced them to go to a Japanese restaurant. It reminded me of The Simpsons going to Japan and eating at America Town

My character ranking slightly changed:

Honoka > Nico > Rin > Eli > Nozomi > Maki > Umi > Hanayo > Kotori

Honoka was the best. Nico was also a standout character who was a lot of fun. Rin gained some depth while staying extra cute (see gif below). Eli didn't stand out much to me but she was all-around good. Her S2 focus episode (and toning down on the groping) saved Nozomi. Maki was good but could've been better. Umi got angry at Honoka too often for me to really like her. Hanayo never developed much (liking rice just isn't enough of a character quirk to carry her). Lastly, while I'm no longer angry with her, Kotori is still easily the worst.

Anyway, Love Live was a lot of fun, I'm glad I watched it.

I did, actually! I don't always make a post when I complete something (it depends on the anime's popularity and if I feel like I have anything of value to say) but I finished them both awhile ago.

This is true, actually. Lightning is and always will be my gaming waifu but I don't have an anime waifu yet. There's definitely been some great girls but none that come anywhere near Lightning on the waifu scale.
