I mean I agree it doesn't make much sense for them to, but I think they actually do.

Not necessarily. We see them all from Rey's perspective initially, not Kylo's, and it's not like Kylo is ever like "sorry gotta go in the middle of trying to blow up a Resistance fleet"

Using the Force in the biggest way we've seen in a movie isn't enough?

Also I get that he literally died but come on, the OT goes out of its way to show Jedis don't exactly "die" in the way that we think. Even in this movie there's an extended conversation with a ghost who sets a tree on fire and hits someone in the face! There's no way Luke doesn't come back.

Also thought about Luke: Leia and Rey obviously know he's dead, but did Kylo find out? Could Luke's "disappearance" lead the New Order on a wild goose chase after him? Was that part of Luke's plan all along?

Alternatively, if Luke actually wanted to become one with the Force just so he could haunt Kylo forever like an unwanted Obi-Wan, that would be pretty fucking great.

Yeah Luke pulled the single biggest Force feat we've ever seen in canon by a mile. Afterwards he either

A. Died from overexerting himself

B. Became one with the Force since he's finished everything he needed to do in his (physical) life.

In either case, between not giving Rey her final lesson and his final words to Kylo being "see you around, kid," he's 100% coming back as a ghost in the next episode.

Luke got a huge amount of mileage out of using Force Projection but that was mostly due to how he used it. I mean it is a made up ability to they can just say that it kills the user to use it like that but it doesn't really feel like something that is so powerful that it should be lethal to use it. Keep in mind we see Kylo and Rey just casually talking to each other through the Force across a similar distance so it isn't distance along that is a problem.

I mean, TLJ Luke is the funniest Star Wars character in nine movies, so it doesn't seem that far fetched. He trolled as a Jedi master and literally the last member of his religion. Trolling as a ghost would be easy mode.

Luke projected himself to dozens of regular people whereas it's usually only the Force sensitive who can see stuff like that. We've been given no insight as to what he was actually doing, so one can at least speculate that he was mind-controlling every mofo on that battlefield, and that's pretty crazy.

Can't wait for Rey to Force project to every sentient being in the galaxy.

Luke spending Ep9 trolling Kylo as a force ghost is the only way they make me not hate his death

Rey and Kylo also had trouble using it as more than a walkie-talkie. Kylo even mentions how he can't see Rey's environment at first.

I don't know much about Star Wars lore on this front but was it really meant to be mind control? It seems like it'd be far easier to just create a trick of light and sound than try to get inside the head of thousands of people present.

It was decent. Like 6.5/10?

I got very sleepy in the middle of it (like when Finn and the engineer chick were trying to find the codebreaker)...so I got a bit lost lol.

Iunno I just feel like there were too many going on, the Rebels' situation felt too hopeless without a satisfying comeback, and a lot is left unexplained in a way that's a bit frustrating, like Luke's death and Snoke.

It was hinted at during Rey & Kylo's conversations. He said "You're not doing this, the strain would kill you." So we knew that major Force usage can be harmful.

But if it was going to kill him anyway, why not go in person and let Kylo literally kill him ala Obi-Wan (which they were pretty clearly referencing)

Imagine how unsatisfying ANH would have been if Vader just killed a projection of Obi-Wan but then he just faded away on Tattoine...

Also would there be a way for Luke to actually get there period, let alone in time? All he had was his dumpy ass ship in the water and yea he could raise it up but with how long it's been there there might not be stuff even the Force can do to fix it

I thought Luke's ship was just submerged because he had no other place to store it. I kept thinking he was going to show up to help Rey leave the throne room. Maybe fight Kylo Ren + Guards + Snoke so Rey can escape. He would die at Kylo Ren's hands as Rey turns around to see the deathblow. Basically a nod to ANH.

I feel like people were expecting Luke to do too much. He's older now, more wise and powerful in the Force, he's basically Yoda. His physical abilities degraded a lot, which is understandable since he's been in exile for years, not training in any way. It would have been pretty ridiculous for him to show up in his X-Wing and start blowing shit up (that's what Poe is for), and dropping down with a lightsaber to skillfully whoop Kylo's ass.

The whole point was to show just how powerful the Force is. That's what I loved about this movie. We got so much expansion on the powers beyond just moving rocks and swinging a lightsaber around.

Didn't even seem like Luke had his lightsaber anymore. He probably threw his green one away, which is why his projection had the blue lightsaber since it's the last one he held--even though it was destroyed, something Kylo knew and didn't even pay attention to when facing Luke because he was so distraught by the presence of the person he despises most.

I'm glad they went the direction they did, the prequels didn't expand on the Force in any way as I had hoped. Yoda and Sidious should have never had lightsabers. They were supposed to be so powerful in the Force that they didn't need 'em.

This new movie gave us so much more to consider. Leia pulling herself through space, Snoke had such mastery that he didn't even have to concentrate since it was just second nature, and of course Luke projecting himself. Something we've never seen before and it just goes to show just how powerful you can really be if you believe and understand the energy that binds us all.
