IIRC in the TIE Fighter games going into hyperspace basically required you to come to a full stop and had a delay of a few seconds before actually entering, it was pretty damn impractical to use as an "escape" if you were under heavy fire.

It didn't require a full stop. It required a straight direction and steady speed when entering. When you went to hyperspeed, it went to auto control and put you in the proper direction for the jump.

Did they ever hint at how small the Resistance was at the start of the movie? They were down to like 30 guys at the end, but considering they all seemed to be together for the whole film (minus excursions for Rey, Chewie, R2, Finn, and Rose) they surely could not have STARTED with a ton of people. To that end, it really doesn't make sense that Poe would have never even seen Holdo before.

The main thing to complain about the hyperspace suicide wasn't its power, it's something that was flawed from the very beginning

If they only had fuel for 1 hyperspace jump, and it ran out in 18 hours, then why after 17 hours did they still have enough fuel for the jump? Does hyperspace work as long as you have the tiniest bit of fuel? Makes no sense and can't be explained by "it's a movie about space wizards"

But evidently no one complaining about the hyperspace jump spent the 5 seconds of thought required to realize that flaw

That actually has been talked about before. I think the jury's still out on whether hyperspace travel consumes fuel at all, or whether it's merely the act of initiating it that consumes the fuel.

I mean, that entire part of the story (and it's a huge fucking part, arguably taking up more screen time than the Rey/Kylo stuff) is stupid. I'm not sure if you can write "the resistance is very slowly escaping and the first order is hot on their heels but can't do anything for 18 hours" in a non-stupid way.

Lol you truly think you can traverse the Galaxy on the same amount of fuel as you can go a mile? Lol

Nah, they say after the first jump that they have enough fuel for just one more, so it does consume fuel.

Who knows, they've never talked about the fuel consumption of hyperspace travel and they've never really had to until the fanbase started discussing this scene. They certainly don't have the fuel to cruise across the entire galaxy (time notwithstanding), so lightspeed is obviously MUCH more efficient. Hell, lightspeed probably allows them to travel a billion miles with less fuel than they'd need for a mile of normal travel.

That also wouldn't make sense because they said there was only enough fuel for 1 more jump. If you could use less fuel to travel less, they could've used just a bit of it to get to a move favorable planet with a rebel base and then defend themselves there.

But it definitely seems more like there is a huge fuel cost to entering hyperspace. Probably some different fuel usage based on distance traveled, but the jump itself should take the majority of the energy, which is seen in how destructive it can be as a suicide bomb.

It's also entirely possible that the hyperdrive uses a completely different fuel source than the sublight engines. So, at the beginning of the chase they would have had enough fuel for one hyperspace jump and 18 hours of sublight travel.

hyperspace is already some kind of magic voodoo, I don't think attaching logic to it really works. I would just let it be weird and nebulous, kinda like the force.

Eh. Star Trek has a warp reactor for warp speed and impulse engines for normal movement. It's common for one to go offline and only be able to use the other. Nothing too unusual with what Star Wars did.

I thought about that too but then still why wouldn't they hyperjump somewhere more comfortable and then do the whole 18 hour slow crawl thing?

My guess is that would have been riskier than secretly evacuating people to a planet that they know has an old rebel stronghold where they can get out a distress signal. A lot of The Last Jedi is told from Poe's pov as opposed to the general's.

I'd be willing to bet that within the first 20 minutes of the next movie someone comes and is like "sorry we're late"

Lando maybe?

I doubt it seeing as I expect a time skip with plenty of openness between 2 and 3 for the full war to be explored in media over the next decade

Even in this video, he said some of the things I've mentioned in these topics.

STAR WARS
EPISODE IX
THE FIRST ORDER

LUKE SKYWALKER is still alive. The deception of the FIRST ORDER led the RESISTANCE FANBASE to believe otherwise. SUPREME LEADER SNOKE faked his death in an attempt to trick MARY SUE REY SKYWALKER into submission.

The Last Jedi has been DECANONIZED, leading the struggling Resistance to go back in time and escape their world all over again. SJW characters have been removed from existence and lightsaber duels occur every five minutes. It is a time of great reactionary revisionist history. Familiarity reigns.

Aboard the Millennium Falcon, Mary Sue Rey Skywalker remembers she couldn't have beaten KYLO REN and dies of sudden wounds....

Finally seen it. Great movie. I'm slowly reading through the last topic and this one, and there likely isn't anything I could add that hasn't already been discussed.

I will say that I'm glad we got that final act on Crait, because for a second while watching it I thought "man, I really hope this movie doesn't revolve entirely around a low speed car chase in space".
