really estelle's craft list gets outclassed by some many people in the end

Now that I'm done with DDLC, I decided to start up episode 1 of Higurashi. Man, it's weird how nostalgic this is making me even though I've never played it just because it reminds me of Umineko with all the sound effects, the background, the writing style, everything.

Speaking of which I still need to actually read episode 5, especially since my friend tells me it's the best one.

Should probably just re-read the entire series that's out on Steam before 6-8 get released at this point tbh, since I think I've forgotten a lot of the details.

Whew, finished with chapter 2 in Trails SC. I had to restart at one point because I accidentally entered the boss room before getting all the treasures. Plus, being able to use the hot spring to max out your CP before you fight the boss is really helpful.

also I still don't really get the need to change Zane to Zin for a more oriental sound when his mysterious rival is literally named Walter

Kingdom Hearts Platinum get. Yeah, the gummi ship wasn't so bad. I only had to beat two level 3 missions to get the blueprints required for the trophy.

Last thing I did was a quick run through game on Beginner difficulty for the Unchanging Armor and Speedster trophies. Man, not being able to change your starting equipment was really difficult for the final world. Dark Riku was super easy, and yet fucking Chernabog kept kicking my ass. The final boss also took forever.

today's (delayed by storms) theme for bloodborne progress: the good hunter is not a good friend

I might miss a few things I did because my memory is awful, but I'll try to hit the highlights as I remember them at least.

Starting with the continuation of my being told to leave the gatling gun hunter alone I went and got myself sent to the Hypogean Gaol. Pretty small area and I eventually made my way over to Darkbeast Paarl. Died once because I got stunlocked by electricity. I had tried engaging him at range for a while before discovering it was actually safer to be close. Crushed him the second time. Moved forward and ended up back in Old Yharnam. Went over to the gatling gun hunter and made a new friend. Then because I was greedy for Blood Echoes and just kinda curious I tried to fight my way out in the direction of the Cathedral Ward rather than backtrack. I really should have seen that coming. I think part of me hoped he wouldn't notice/care unless I returned to him. Instead he opened fire immediately. So I returned and defeated him. the good hunter is such a bad friend. Somewhere around here I remembered that Gerhman told me something about the Chapel and found a new path. After some platforming (and platforming deaths) I found the bizarro hunter's dream. Which was neat!

Then I decided I might as well get back to where I think I'm supposed to be and went to the Forbidden Woods. god snakes why. Also, there's this cave system that is 100% the worst thing ever. Poison Water and these god damn eel things that do way more damage than they have the right to. Died down here multiple times and even lost like 55k Blood Echoes because of it. still mad. This cave also had a path that led me, to all, places - Central Yharnam and specifically the Clinic. place doesn't seem that legit. Also found an invitation to a castle. So naturally I'm like "what could go wrong."

turns out more than i thought. god these... things... right at the start outside it. These are the worst. After getting destroyed a few times I was about to give up and decide I'm not supposed to be here yet but on what I decided would be my final try I fought my way inside (and got better at fighting those things a bit.) Castle Interior was a lot easier. Pretty tedious though. Fought my way through that and made it to Martyr Logarius. Died a few times, some embarrassingly quick, but I've gotten a lot better at parrying and apparently you can cheese this guy with that. Still was super close. Ended the fight with 0 vials or shots, and that was after using the health -> ammo thing. Read the item I picked up and decided to put it on and oh hey a new area. So I made another new friend. and became a vampire or something i dunno.

anyway because i'm such a helpful guy i remembered there was this hunter friend who was interested in this castle so i told him about it. decided to go check up on him and dude has no chill oh my god. so much for my new friend. the good hunter is such a bad friend.

So now I think I have the choices of returning to the Lost Woods (seriously zelda has nothing on this place) or because I'm feeling confident after my castle adventure, head to that Nightmare Frontier I bailed on earlier.

dang xp you got a lot done! are you using a guide or something? it seems like you're blazing through a ton of optional/hidden content super efficiently for a first run.

bloodsuckers are annoying, I agree. I usually just run past them and directly into the castle when I get there. no reason to fight them honestly.

nightmare frontier is super easy. it's like +4/+5 tier and if you explored cainhurst you should have a +6/+7 weapon by now at least. it is a large and confusing area though so expect to wander around lost for a while until you figure out where you're going.

there's a shortcut at the end of the level that leads directly to the boss, so after you've found your way through once you won't have to do it again.

Yeah. I forget when I started doing it, but I've made a habit of looking up what missables and such there are when I start a game. I like to experience as much of the content as I can and I don't often replay games - or if I do it tends to be quite a while later. Bloodborne actually feels like something I could see myself replaying but I couldn't have known that beforehand so whoops~

Some of the stuff like the path to the Clinic, and by extension Cainhurst as well as the quest line that kicks you into Nightmare Frontier I'm pretty sure I'd have found myself since I try to explore everything and talk to NPCs all the time. Other things like Djura's quest lmao no way in hell I'd have figured that out. There's some gray areas where I may or may not have figured it out like Hypogean Gaol where it's plausible that I may have gotten killed by the right enemy. I mean, it happened once I was actually there! but it's hard to say. The Abandoned Old Workshop is similar. I think I would have noticed and gotten there because I pay even more attention when the game has me platforming because items and stuff tend to be hidden, but I can't know for sure. Plus, like I said, that update was delayed by storms keeping me from coming here to post, so that combined a bit of playtime.

Anyways~ I got more stuff done.

MariaTaylor posted...
nightmare frontier is super easy.

i was not prepared

Well, I should clarify. I'd say this was the most frustrating place for me but for a few very specific reasons. The layout is complicated like you said. that damn poison swamp. But most especially, that enemy type that causes frenzy if it has aggroed to you. and keeps climbing even after it dies. oh my god. So, unless I'm an idiot (very possible) I just have to deal with the swamp meaning I'm continually poisoned and my speed is wrecked. Frenzy is also super OP and resulted in my death a few times meaning I got to do it all over again. I had 2 Sedatives to deal with it but any encounter with that enemy was a guaranteed Frenzy inflict (barring a Sedative use but again, I could only do this twice.) So I had to "counter" by blowing through a ton of vials in the swamp to keep my health up, had to make sure I was at/near max HP when engaging that enemy and just "tank" the frenzy damage and heal back up.

it was awful

Made worse by the fact that I don't think any enemy type there dropped vials so I had no chance of restocking. and also that almost all of my frustration ended up going towards my fighting into a dead end. okay there was an item that lets me transform into a messenger but basically a dead end

Anyway, once that was all over the boss rush section of this update began. And comically (to me at least) it was a breeze compared to that. Amygdala got me once because laserz. Then I basically glued myself to him and was basically unhittable so that was simple. Then it turned out I was at the end of the Forbidden Woods so I beat the Shadows of Yharnam first try. One scary part where some massive snakes almost got me, but visceral attacks still OP.

Then I went to Byrgenwerth and got mad that this place had sedatives and enemies that dropped them. But I guess that's on me for not coming here before. Place was super short so I then fought Rom. Got killed once because I got stunned at the worst possible time and meteor'd but this was an easy fight too, just had to take it nice and slow and whittle down the mobs.

oh noes character limit

So, yeah. I'm guessing my not having much trouble with those bosses is because all my little excursions into other areas resulted in me being overlevelled/geared but it was really fun for me nonetheless. Rom actually might be my favorite fight so far even though it was arguably the easiest for me. Cool location, cool music (usually I'm too busy trying to stay alive to notice it in boss fights) and it made me think I'm the bad guy here because this time I had to start the fight whereas all the other fights you're automatically aggro'd. And then Rom doesn't even attack at first, and the whole time he and his mini-spiders are backing away from you with the little guys making some attacks if you approach (and Rom himself towards the very end). So yeah, I really enjoyed that!

Also looks like a bunch of places (everywhere maybe? I stopped after I made my way back to a lamp after Rom) changed so I'll have to go around talking to people. NPC dialogue has been mostly unchanged for a bit with a few exceptions, but from my short sample size so far that has changed entirely.

Cathedral Ward way creepier now. that amygdala on the cathedral oh my god. nopenopenope. Also my NPC friends there aren't having a great time. Except the original guy who asked me to send him people. He's still chill as ever! Hunter's Dream music got a cool upgrade and I like the updated appearance with the tinges of red in the sky there.

Bloodborne continues to be an excellent game I'm glad I'm playing~

also biggest clue is definitely the fact that she has 10k HP. >_>

The biggest clue about Renne tbh is when you can meet her in chapter 1 and she has this attention-drawing character design which clearly had a lot of effort put into it (and is also pretty standard for her character type) and then her parents don't even get portraits.

hey xp the good news is that there's a trophy for collecting every hunter's tool, including the messengers gift. so if you forced yourself to go all the way through that poison swamp guarded by the frenzy monster and collected it now you won't have to go back and do it later.

well, that's assuming you're interested in going after the trophies or just collecting every hunter tool for your own sake.

and ah I see what you mean about using a guide. I typically almost never use guides for games unless it's something very strategic like etrian odyssey where I need to look up the mechanical/numerical value of each skill so I know how many rank to put into skills. for something like bloodborne I'll always just play it blindly. this caused me to miss a good deal of content on my first run (almost half of the base game is optional!) but I was fine with that since I knew I'd be playing it multiple times anyway.

Well I mean you did just finish what is more or less Renne's chapter, and she's by far the most memorable part. The main other things I remember are Kevin doing things and Kanone being Kanone. Kevin's role was good but relatively minor, and then Kanone...well I think most people agree she's pretty much a dud character.

I guess Dunan has some uncharacteristically decent scenes if I'm remembering the right part?

Chapter 3 is largely uninteresting because Renne is largely uninteresting (and partly because my word why doesn't Grancel have decent sidequests in either game when it's so large).

The best parts of the chapter are the parts where Renne isn't around: Meeting Kevin at the wall with the fake Joshua letter, and the showdown at the harbor with playable Julia. Oh right, and Dorothy giving Estelle the picture of Joshua is technically part of Chapter 3, too, even though it's literally the very last thing. Oh right, the brief playable Agate/Anelace segment was cool, too.

but yeah Renne has a lot of screen time here and virtually none of it is good

I sort of agree, though I really like the way the end of the chapter plays out (which partially involves Renne, though I would say I like it as a whole more than I like any character's specific role). A lot of Renne's early scenes are meh though and I hate hide-and-seek.

Renne's good scenes that are specific to her are mostly later on in SC and in The 3rd imo. (I know you've said you don't like Renne at all, but yeah)

Yeah I guess I'm sort of the opposite. I do think they're both pretty forgettable compared to the rest of the Enforcers though.

Renne > Loewe > Luciola > Campanella > Walter > Bleublanc

Bleublanc is memorable but in a bad way. Not sure where to rank Weissman since I sort of like the character himself, but at the same time I think something about him drags down the narrative as a whole, if that makes sense.
