good song

better scene

One thing I only noticed on replay is that Joshua's eyes are a bit dimmer during the first half of SC (to match with Estelle saying that his eyes look colder), but after that scene they return to their original brightness. Thought it was a nice touch.

Chain of Memories Platinum get. Took 8 hours to get Riku from level 50 to 99.

For KH2 only gummi ship left, but I'll do a full Crit run. It's really fun anyway, and I've never done Data Org on that difficulty. Just Seph and LW.

I totally bought the rest as soon as I could. Fun game, story is nuts, not sure if it's better or not, certainly told better at least.

Gameplay is pretty awesome but I think I wanted more on that front as well. Still better than Nier!

interesting choice to add Ray and Mighty as playable characters since probably most of the fanbase has never played Chaotix or that arcade game they were both in

Oh hey, the Kawai Complex manga is finished now. This is one of those things that I'm not sure why I stuck with it the whole way through, but I did! It was probably for Ritsu more than anything else.

I suppose if you want to read that on Crunchyroll, you probably should go ahead and do that before it gets taken down!

upset alert for virginia

Bloodborne:

chalice dungeons beated (finally)

Bloodletting Beast mk II took a few attempts for me to re-learn the tells and dodge timings for his attacks, but once I did (and stopped trying to be cute) it wasn't a problem. Final Boss was easy, got it first try, but it was pretty neat, there were a few tricky spots but not bad.

So then I finally went over to the DLC. This place is kinda funny after all those Chalice Dungeons, I'm way too OP again.

impossible. if you cleared all of the mandatory dungeons then you're basically just standing at the starting line. after that you have literally infinite content!

yeah this is more or less spot on. she's easy but still kinda neat.

mandatory chalice dungeons end at a challenge level that is about roughly equal to NG+

the DLC is equal to about NG endgame

so yeah, you might be a little overpowered but honestly it's better than the alternative. all that being said you'll probably start to struggle after the first area, and even with the first boss. so yeah just be glad that you can at least steamroll a few enemies on the way there.

oh hey it's time for a random Hyouka update!

I finally finished the fourth book, which I liked a lot. It was all still stuff that the anime adapted, but the Valentine's Day episode and "The Doll that Took a Detour" were both really good episodes in the anime because they gave you some insight and character development for Satoshi and Chitanda. In particular, I like the latter story because Chitanda is largely a static character up to this point, but you get to see the "formal" and "proper" side to her here, as well as her giving her speech at the end about what it means to her to be the heir of the Chitanda family. The anime adaptation was pretty faithful here. The anime added a lot of shipteasing between Hotaro and Chitanda throughout the show that wasn't in the books, but all the shipteasing stuff that was in the anime in that last episode was here in the story this time, too.

So starting with book 5, we're entering into all new territory, so I'm pretty excited to see what happens!

okay I'm already feeling good about how book 5 has begun

although honestly part of it is because it definitely has a different (read: much better; I haven't even read that much of it yet and I can already tell the difference) translator than the first four did so it's making it much easier to read

it's also kind of nice not knowing the gist of what the story is going to be about!

Bloodborne:

Guess I'll divide this up into non-boss and boss parts because otherwise this will seem disjointed. Had some platforming deaths in the Research Hall because I kept thinking "hey this looks like a make-able jump (Author's Note: It was not a make-able jump.)" Research Hall was pretty cool, my favorite of the DLC Areas so far, mostly for the NPCs. Then I made it to the Fishing Village and this place is the worst. Everything so loud and high-pitched (this may be because I had a headache during all this, so that probably wasn't helping) and those damn giants. I went to the bottom of a well and once again, Zelda has nothing on this place. Heard the sound that comes from those frenzy enemies that tortured me before and was on alert. In retrospect I wish it had been them. Those two giants was the absolute worst. Lost 200k Blood Echoes here and I'm irrationally mad about it given I can easily make up multiple times that amount in the Chalice Dungeons I still have open. Worked my way up to the Lighthouse Hut before stopping.

And speaking of that place, shout-outs to my Hunter bro there who gave me Simon's Bowblade and a key. Not for that, but because he may be my favorite NPC so far because I loved all the lore talk. Wish there was more of that intrigue. =(

As for the bosses, this is really just building up to the best fight, but here we go. Ludwig was easy. Perhaps too easy. I think my OP-ness shined through here. Or maybe I'm just better at dodging who knows. The Living Failures were well named because lmao joke fight. Pretty sure it was intended as a joke fight even too since the main event is literally the next room. Lady Maria such a cool fight. I decided I wanted to style in that fight and only fight with parries and visceral attacks. Got wrecked a bunch as I learned how to deal with her different attacks but it was a ton of fun the whole way. On my winning attempt I just straight up obliterated her. I've thought this on occasion, but this one really hammered it home, kind of wish there was a replay boss ability.

NG+

or starting a fresh character and playing the bosses again with different builds!

but yeah it's kinda weird to me. dark souls 2 introduced this great system where you could make bosses respawn and fight them again if you wanted. every single game in the series after that has completely ignored this system and gone back to the 'one fight and then they're gone' style.

Okay, Hyouka book 5 has been really interesting thus far. Not that there's really any chance of another season of the anime at this point, but I think it'd be difficult to adapt due to the format of how the story is being told. Well, maybe not "difficult" so much as "awkward."

also the similarities between Hyouka and Haruhi Suzumiya have increased with this book

so like 8 months ago i said after watching like 2 episodes of outlaw star this might be something jeff and leon would like (and was told jeff had watched it probably)

let's revisit that now that i have finally finished it

I'm gonna walk that one back a fair bit. I don't think Leon would care for it much. Like 5.5/10 or something. Jeff (we can see how wrong I am!) I think would like it because SPACE and 90s but would also be a bit disappointed in its execution. One exception case: Leon might enjoy this if Jeff watches it too and they make fun of how 90s it is.

because it is one 90s show

~~~
also surprise bloodborne beated
Wrapping up the DLC: Surprisingly the most frustrating part turned out to be Laurence. Not because it was hard but because I had to keep Valtr alive for the Vermin because apparently the only way I could complete his quest without PS+ was to do so. it was an ordeal let me tell you what. Anyway there were no more giant dudes in the village so it was mostly smooth sailing on the way to the DLC Final Boss. now this guy. this guy is kinda neat but also i kinda don't know what to make of him. I died a few times learning his Phase 1 attacks and their timings. I still don't know wtf is up with Phase 2. Ultimately what I ended up doing, stumbling on this strategy partly by accident, was going hyper aggressive (and using Old Hunter Bone as much as I could) and just rolling towards him a lot and slashing. Eventually this worked. somehow. He's super erratic in Phase 2 so yeah.
Then I went back to the main game and got to bask in my glorious OPness again. Mergo's Wet Nurse was a joke fight because of it. Then things got ~r e a l~
Returning to the Hunter's Dream to see the building on fire was whoa. Then came what is probably my favorite fight in the game - Gerhman. Like with Maria I wanted to style with parries and viscerals, but I died a few times learning timings again. Eventually I got him though. Music and atmosphere for this fight was superb. Hunter fights the best, clearly.
then it was time for the true final boss who was both not as cool, fun, or challenging as the preceding fight. couple scary moments, like when DESCEND HEARTLESS ANGEL happened when he blocked my healing. but yeah, this was pretty easy, he had like no hp lol.
~~~

So, yeah, that's Bloodborne. Excellent game, glad I finally got around to playing it.

edit: Oh, right. ~the plan~ is to move on to The Witcher 3 I think.

I didn't get around to actually make a bracket other than a general outline in my head... but it would have been busted lol.

UVA to the finals. Arizona over Kentucky. Probably UNC in the Final Four, dunno, v Xavier feels like something I'd have toyed with. Not sure what I'd have done with MSU/Duke, but I'd take that winner over Kansas easy - if I didn't have Kansas lose earlier lolz - so if I sided with MSU lol.

so really nothing was lost

that's not the only way to get a Vermin.

all you have to do is equip the League rune that you get from Valtyr in Forbidden Woods and kill some Hunters while you have it equipped. this even applies to NPC Hunters so it can be done easily without going online.

That's not true. I played around with it a bit.

NPC Hunters drop Blood Dregs (with the right rune obviously) but not Vermin. The exception is 3 particular hunters in the DLC.

unless my tests were just suffering awful luck before i gave up on them

as someone who plays exclusively offline I strongly feel that I've collected more than 3 Vermin on characters before. I have memories of getting them from completing other events while having the proper rune equipped. I have memories of crushing more than 3 Vermin at a time with a character. I guess there's a possibility that I'm remembering wrong.

Maybe I screwed up somewhere then and didn't have the rune equipped when I thought I did during the main game.

I absolutely did have it on during the entire DLC up through to the Lighthouse Hut and only got 3 Vermin from Hunters though, that I am sure of. The remaining 2 came from Valtr assisting/surviving boss fights in the DLC.

Also, I've got three of the four Tetracyclic Towers down. Only the one with Renne to go. I kinda feel bad for not taking Tita here, but the guide recommends bringing Kevin along to help with the boss and Kloe is too powerful of a magic user at this point for me to drop her. It might work out for the best though because the main reason I didn't use Kevin in the final dungeon my first time through the game is because he was so ridiculously underleveled compared to everyone else. I guess this time Tita will be that one for me, but that's no big loss. I love her as a character, but as a fighter, she's not so great.
