I wish I liked Stickler, but he missed the mark for me in a bad way.

I didn't find AJ's attempts at humourous characters successful at all.

The one funny Stickler moment I remember is that one time that he's going on about something and it just slowly fades to black to the CROSS EXAMINATION screen

otherwise, he's, I dunno.

AA4 is

I'm not even sure what the right word is. Not really "dark," or "bleak," although of the AA games it is the most of those things

but it's just like

the most subdued and muted AA

I actually don't mind it, and I hated the game overall less on my most recent replay, but yeah, it is that.

I think AJ suffers from tonal dissonance more than any other game in the series. I think Takumi is trying to maintain the classic levity of the series, but it doesn't totally mesh with Phoenix being a disillusioned bum and Apollo in general being a cynic. Trucy's really the only AJ character who kind of "fits" the OT mold.

Trucy: I can still remember that moment...You brandished those bloomers on high, and shouted..."Objection!"
Apollo: ...Here's what I want you to do, Trucy. Take that memory, gently lock it away deep in your heart, and never speak of it.

seriously these two are worth the price of admission in AJ

I've said it before, but the most annoying thing about investigations in AJ is that only one thing activates at a time, so you can go to literally every single place before you get to the right place (as I just did) and have literally nothing happen.

Yeah I hate on a lot of things about AJ but the new core cast is just great. I dunno about Apollo vs Phoenix (though I suspect I line up with Leon, OT Phoenix > Apollo > new Phoenix) but I definitely come down strong on the side of Trucy > Maya. And I really enjoy cranky Ema. Klavier's cool but his lack of plot role is disappointing.

Grumpy Ema is the best.

And while Trucy is great, I can't put her above Maya. She just hasn't been utilized well enough. 6-2 was a step in the right direction, and maybe now with Apollo gone, she can get more screentime in the future. An Athena/Trucy case would probably be pretty fun.

You know, if Alita shot Meraktis from inside the noodle stand, shouldn't there be a bullet hole in the front of it somewhere? Why didn't anyone notice it? Well, I guess you can chalk it up to AA police being sloppy as usual. They didn't even bother investigating the safe.

I think my favorite part of Alita's plan is that she hired Apollo to represent Wocky precisely because she expected him to be utterly incompetent

although I do like that a large chunk of the night of the murder is a blank spot to her because she was unconscious after being strangled so you end up bringing up a lot of details she's unaware of

also Meraktis has to be up near the top of the biggest scumbag victim list

I'm guessing 4-3 is where the Judge passes up Maya for 3rd place

and also maybe where Mia falls out of the top ten depending on how many lines Trucy gets

and looking back over the overall list I just realized I forgot to include Trucy in there, but she's at 17th between Godot and Gregory with 755

one thing I do appreciate about 4-3 is all the music and song references it makes

"They don't have to turn on the red light" and "Who'd name their band the Police?" in particular are so good

also I did like the concept of having the playable character be a witness to the murder although they kind of botched the execution, like most of 4-3's neat ideas

you know I really like the ladder/stepladder conversations between Apollo and Trucy since you can tell Trucy only does it because she learned it from her dad

whenever Apollo tries to get into the technical aspects, she doesn't know what to say and just ends the conversation by going "...I still say it's a stepladder"

The music references are indeed great.

4-2 has more lines than I expected. I dunno, maybe I got less stuck on the case (AJ in general I found "easier" than the original trilogy cases, no psyche-locks to navigate and trials are pretty breezy generally) but it certainly took me signifcantly less time than 2-2 for instance.

Funny to watch Apollo rocket up the line count so fast regardless. Two cases and he's into the top ten! Going to be interesting to see if he can make #3 before AJ even ends (looks like it'll be close).

Hmmm...I'm kinda thinking he won't just because he has to split 4-4 with Phoenix (and 4-4 is kinda short for an epic case, too).

I'm actually curious to see who ends up with the most lines between Apollo and Phoenix in 4-4. I'd lean Apollo initially, but I think it'll be tight.

No, they're incredibly stupid during the day 1 trial. It is absolutely the single worst segment in the series.

there are so many holes in the case against Machi and yet nobody can apparently find a single one of them

everything with the revolver and the Interpol number is handled unbelievably poorly to the point that it's hard to believe Takumi wrote it

trial day 2 at least has the showdown with Daryan after you get done with the video and the magic trick

investigation day 2 also has the segment in Klavier's office which is pretty cool

so yeah, day 2 is noticeably better than day 1 even though it's still not that good either

Whatever scenario-writing magic Takumi had for AA was clearly lost after 3-5. 1-5 and AJ still have character work and humour at times but case construction is some flavour of bad throughout.

But yeah 4-3 day 1 trial is definitely one of the low points. Definitely second your thoughts there.

also for how completely and utterly incompetent he is on day 1, Apollo has Klavier on the ropes nearly the entire day on day 2 once he finally realizes there's no case against Machi
