Like here's the thing -- I have Legacy decks. I have a Cube with only 6 cards out of 700+ proxied. I stand to lose a LOT of value if the Reserve List goes away. And even I say "fuck the Reserve List."

The problem is legal, though. At this point the Reserve List could easily be interpreted as a "contract" legally with retailers, etc. A court could order Wizards to reinstate it if they tried to get rid of it.

Reserved list is healthy for magic. It's just bad for the actual players in vintage/legacy/whatever

Having this unattainable tier to look up to is actually good for the players at kitchen tables or fnms. Hard to describe, but it makes the hobby feel deeper

It also lends credence to the value of collecting when you can say a few specific cards are worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. It attracts newbies to the hobby

I'm not sure what validity this has when no card printed sincw the end of the reserve list will ever attain those heights.

Special printings. I doubt Masterpieces will ever be reprinted with that same frame.

By this exact logic, the Reserved List cards will never again be reprinted the same way, and will therefore retain value if they were to be reprinted in a modern frame.

Look at 7th edition foil prices. Old border foils have their own market. You can get a foil Birds of Paradise for under $10. But if you want an old border one, it'll be closer to $400.

That's the same point. I don't know what you're getting at. You're saying that certain versions of cards (7th foil Birds, Masterpieces) have more value due to scarcity, despite being reprinted into the ground like Birds has. I am also saying that they could reprint Reserved List cards, and the original printed versions would retain value due to scarcity of that particular version.

Look at Imperial Recruiter. It was a $250 card. They reprinted it, and that reprint is worth $30. The original is still $190. Sure, it lost value, but the collectible version is still much more valuable compared to the accessible version now available if you just want the card to play.

Hmm?

I don't think I said anything that disagreed with you.

I originally just said that special printings such as Masterpieces could attain the price heights that Reserve List cards reach. They already have some in the $300-$400 range.

His point is, if thats the case, why not start reprinting reserve list cards. New bordered duals would make the cards more accessible, while the older reprintings would retain most of their value.

Why was that directed at me? I wasn't even talking about reprinting the Reserved List.

I just chimed in about the prices of fancy bordered foils.

Reprinting the Reserved List isn't a real conversation though; it's a meme. It exists and that's that. Better to talk about things that can happen, such as interesting reprints that have value.

Im perfectly aware that its a legal non-starter. I just think its borderline sociopathic to say its great when it prevents so many people from playing great formats in what is a game first and a collectible second.

It also has the secondary effect of encouraging a booming counterfeit market that can cost both players and retailers thousands of dollars easily, given the sophistication of the fakes.

It's because most people actually playing MTG are more concerned with increasing the playerbase and accessibility than the value of their collection, and the public face of the game is constantly admitting that the RL is one of their biggest mistakes.

Accessibility is a major concern among players of all constructed formats, the RL is just the easiest target.

I dunno about fun, but if I lose to something like Jund it feels fair, which is close? It can be fun to lose to crazy brews once in a while.

I think it depends a lot on the opponent and circumstances too. People have fun losing games of Commander all the time.

When most Wraths are 5 mana, the extra turn is a blessing. Exiling is also really good with Gods and Phoenixes running around.

Speaking from the other side, it's annoying to play around because you want to avoid swinging with everything you have, which plays into single-target removal (or just not pressuring the other player enough, letting them cast other spells without pressure).

Commander Anthology 2 decks:

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/commander-anthology-vol-ii-legends-and-decklists-2018-05-08

Mimeoplasm is kind of meh its definitely the least exciting of the originals (if for no other reason than the Jeskai one had Flusterstorm). The Atraxa one was necessary. But did they really have to reprint the Boros deck that nobody bought and rotted on store shelves?

Im not spending money on this, thats for sure.

WRONG

Also the Kalemme deck actually has some good value in it. Urza's Incubator is like a $15+ card and Blade of Selves is close to $15 as well. Plus Fiery Confluence which is like $25.
