I started two currently-airing anime today and they were both really good! There are still a few I need to catch up on so I won't post a season ranking yet but these would both be near the top.

Hinamatsuri has been amazing so far, I love all the characters and the comedic moments have all been hilarious. For an anime with so many varied elements (yakuza dude, telekinetic power girl, the trials of homelessness, etc) I'm really impressed at how well everything is coming together.

I also got caught up on Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits- and I'm enjoying it a lot too. The concept reminds me a lot of the Ancient Magus' Bride with a girl who can see magical creatures being forced into a marriage arrangement. However, Kakuriyo has been really impressing me in a lot of areas where I thought AMB stumbled. Aoi, the main character, has been really expressive and fun so far, I like her a lot. She's exploring the fantastic world with an appropriate sense of wonder, so I'm enjoying the world-building. She's also approaching the creepy marriage situation with a realistic amount of wariness, which I really appreciate. My only complaint so far is that the animation is a bit dicey at times but that isn't the sort of thing that really bothers me.

The one thing I didnt need was the time in the beginning replaying the end of the Muscular fight. But I accept that that's basically my one issue with the series, replaying shown scenes a bit too much.

Oh yeah I meant to say most of the Devilman characters were ok. Akira, Miki and Wamu were the best. Miko was pretty decent too I guess. Some were like total nobodies though and sorta felt like they rushed too much so things didnt have the impact they should have. Ryo was awful and there was never a time where he was good or interesting

Devilman Crybaby major spoilers They never did anything to make you feel anything other than negative things about Ryo imo. He starts off with 0 empathy for life, it was super obvious early on he wasnt human, hes the main cause of almost every bad thing that happens and then he finally cries at the end after he realized he cares about literally 1 person he just killed. Am I supposed to feel bad for this prick? Am I supposed to feel anything other than disgust and hatred for him? Fucking asshat deserves a trillion times worse than anybody got in this show. Living alone crying is too good for him.

I'm on chapter 26 of Magical Girl of the End/Apocalypse, and to call this convoluted would be the understatement of the century. What the fuck is going on?

Those 3 episodes are a between set of OVAs, it's been there for a long time. New season has no date for the Amazon release yet, probably a long time away.

(spoilers for today's episode) Shigaraki giving me chills here. I kind of like ho the villains (well this one at least) are going through character growth along with the heroes. Makes for some neat storytelling structure.

Also liking class B a lot right now. The fight against the gas guy was pretty great.

Speaking of gas guy, I didn't expect someone to pull out literally a ****ing gun in the middle of a My Hero Academia fight. Definitely a fan of this dude's character concept/design, and I hope we see more of him in the future even though there's a decent chance we might not.

Not quite as good as last week's episode but this is definitely moving ahead of Steins;Gate 0 for my #1 of the season.

Motherfucker pulling a gun off all things was great. Out of everything I expected that was the last. I loved it. Dude was also consistent. He fired six bullets and reloaded. That makes me really happy.

Hero Academia S3 marathon is gonna be fun times in uh however many weeks it takes to finish. I dunno if its gonna be 12-13 episodes or 24-26

Thoughts

Steins;Gate 0 maintains the top spot. I still considering to be far and away the best show of the season and it has had maybe the best first four episodes of a show (although it is technically cheating as it's an offshoot of an existing IP) I have seen.

The four shows in the next tier I feel are splitting apart from the rest of the pack too. MHA especially I feel has the most to really rise as it got off to a slow start, but it looks like it's going to really rev things up. Like I said before though, it has to be really good because this season is really good. Like as good as MHA ep 3 and 4 were (and they were great) the 4 shows above it are complete packages in what they are going for. Like all of these shows look really good. Like if you have not seen FMP, I think this third season is 100% worth investing time in the previous ones to get into.

I had a hard time deciding where Franxx would enter into this week. I feel like some of the show has been kind of eh, but the highs of the show are probably higher than any other show on the list right now. I still think that a weak finish would absolute tank this shows overall perception so just because I view it as favorable now does not mean I'm still sold on it's being locked into being a good show. I think the biggest issue right now is that it's just beating around the bush for the actual story elements and have been trudging through character dynamic for too long.

I also really like GGO. Although I guess I could call it like PubG the animation or Fortnite or something too. But I like how this time around some game rules make sense and I'm not really forced to suspend my disbelief too far like I was in the original SAO. Although I do think it would be very funny if they had a special gun that shot out a sword (and exploded like grenades).

Food Wars S3 has been great too despite not really having any food wars yet. They've gotten by simply on character dynamic and it's really been carrying this half of the season. The match with Akira might take the rest of the season.

Grancrest Senki is a show that should be exciting but just isn't.

Also Piano anime is like really teetering on if I want to keep it or not. Like in terms of being good or bad I think it's good enough to keep based on the standards I've set for dropping, but it's been maybe the most predictable show of the season.

No yea it's fuckin great. Just like "Yea I have my gas quirk.....nah fuck it I need a gun" because of course there would be villains that can't rely solely on their quirk

The name of the series is very misleading in the current market, not a magical girl manga at all. Closer to Highschool of the Dead....early on at least. No really way to talk around spoilers for this one.

No, but it's easy to see where the mixup could come from since actual zombies are involved (those killed my "magical girls" become zombies), but the entire "zombie apocalypse" setup is literally just the first act setup to a much bigger story. I just got caught up a few minutes ago to the newest translated chapter, and its QUITE the insane manga, truly deserving the title of rollercoaster. The main character being a male is not an issue by any means.

my two highest rated anime of the past few years New Game and South Pole Girls are all female cast

Main Characters are usually among the most mediocre in a given series anyways. Male/Female doesn't really have much of an impact on that I think.

There are plenty of bad female protagonists and characters too. Its just easier for a lot of people to ignore that if the girls are attractive where nobody really cares about the guys for the most part
