my biggest issue is that's it's entirely non-interactive

at least with manga, I have to change pages myself; same with VNs and advancing text

Steins;Gate (the original I mean) might be mainly about Okabe and Kurisu, but I always felt like it was Mayuri who was (or maybe represents?) the heart and soul of the series. This episode of S;G 0 reminding me why I thought that.

One of the most underappreciated anime characters imo.

Super glad they pulled the "we know your true identity" card now. Would have felt too cliche if they did it after getting him all the way to a final with Yuri. Adding in a little subplot with the brother trying to take back the company is dope.

Yeah I liked this too. The anime has been kind of cliche so far (which isn't necessarily bad and it's still really well done) but this happening now legitimately surprised me and I'm excited to see what happens next.

The Spring 2018 Search for the best girl.

This season is somewhat of an anomaly where I don't really have a front runner for best girl, or rather, even one who could be like a contender, at least for new girls. Last season was just chock full of great female characters like Nadeshiko (Yuru Camp), Yuzu (Citrus), the cast from A Place Further than the Universe, Juri (Kokkoku), Violet (Violet Evergarden), Hitomi (Killing Bites), 0-2 (Darling in the Franxx), and my pick Smug Face Takagi (Skilled Teaser Takagi).

However, Spring is dominated by sequels and in the non sequels shows are doing it with more than its cast. I'd go as far to say that Iroha Igarashi (3D Girl) would probably be best new girl, but it's too bad her show was bad enough for me to drop. Right now I'd say Llenn (GGO) is the frontrunner this season but it's kind of messed up when I'd put all the following girls ahead of her: Hikari Kohinata (Amanchu), Froppy (MHA), Ochako (MHA), Erina (Food Wars), Mayuri (Steins;Gate), A lot of the girls from DxD.

Like I think the best new character this season is Joe (Megalo Box). Having the best new character be a guy is pretty rare since most anime guys are pretty bad. So I went back to see what the last one was.

Best new girl for me is easily Asirpa from Golden Kamuy, but the main girl from Kakuriyo (Aoi) is in the running too. Hinamatsuri has a lot of good choices too.

It's not on the tier of Konosuba or especially Antartica, though I'd put it comfortably above Dropout.

Never really understood the B8 Dropout obsession.

They aren't as deep as characters (well, Anzu arguably is) but I'm certainly enjoying the cast of Hinamatsuri more than the Antarctica cast. They're all just really fun characters who are being utilized well.

Yes. Gabriel Dropout > Hinamatsuri > Universe > Konosuba, castwise.

Like I think the main difference in the utilization is that in Hinamatsuri the driving force behind the comedy is the situation and delivery. Yeah things like Hina being incredibly dumb is part of it, but I don't find the characters be the driving force behind the comedy. But I feel like the Konosuba and Gabriel DropOut have the characters create the comedy through being proactive in someway. (even if it means being... well also incredibly dumb).

That said I think the comedy in Hinamatsuri is better, well more stable. I think so far DropOut and Konosuba have had better highs, but they can be uneven at times. I think the last show that had a consistent level of comedy would be Saiki K.

I think what saiki does for me is also provide some nice satirical commentary with the humor, and not be afraid to subvert it's own expectations.

Even how it handles "serious" developments is excellent.

Speaking of comedy, I started watching Last Period and want to comment on it. Everything about this anime is super lame, from the gacha-world concept to the characters to the comedic style, but I kind of love it for that reason. Wiseman showing up and doing their dumb intro every episode is so much fun.

I saw that episode already and I don't think I knew enough about Higurashi to even be meaningfully spoiled. Unless the one girl being a ghost I think? is some huge spoiler. I'm not going to read the VNs any time soon anyway.

Dropped Tokyo Ghoul since the last few eps have been kinda bad, and it seems like a pretty lame adaptation anyway. Dropped the manga since I hated how inconsistent the entire series felt when it came to pacing, but this didn't really fix anything.

Question for you Granzon *Ghoul Spoilers*

Do you think the anime is planning on removing everything about Mitsuki being a woman, as well as her traumatic events on the Island? The anime already cut out the entire first chapter, for one, which revealed it. It cut out Torso ripping open her shirt to reveal her, which makes Torso's motivation to chase after her....completely out of nowhere and nonsensical in the show. It cut out Urie realizing she was a woman. It's starting to feel like it's one big massive erasure of that character's place in the story.

I think that was their intention. Probably didn't think they could get far enough in the adaption to get to that part so they removed those bits to smooth it out and not leave people hanging. I don't think they did it out of fear of controversy.
