I don't think the result would have changed back in '13, Draven would have won that match easily. L-Block v Draven head to head may be a decent match now though actually. Pikachu would likely win in a 3-way match now, but I wouldn't want to bet on it with our current vote numbers.

You know what would have made this match more interesting? Cloud here instead of Squirtle. If Pikachu had inherited all of Squirtle's votes he would have been close to Snake in strength, and you can also assume that Cloud would have LFF'd Snake based on Classic PlayStation nostalgia, so the match would have been really close. Funny how I'm saying Cloud would have been the one to hold Snake back. What a year.

But instead of Cloud we had Squirtle, and while Squirtle impressed by staying close to Pikachu, that didn't really surprise anybody at this point. Ulti makes a point to say that Blastoise was one vote away from beating Squirtle in the NRT and being our chosen pick instead. I don't know if Blastoise would be stronger than Squirtle, while he certainly is "cooler" as well as being the cover Pokemon for Blue, I'm not sure if that would translate into as much raw strength as Squirtle just being Squirtle.

Do you know how many Picsmiths were trying desperately to get Squirtle's Kamina sunglasses into every pic? Yeah, that's cuz of the anime, not cuz of the games. Squirtle gets a huge portion of his strength from that as well as being playable in Brawl. I think Blastoise would be close in strength but not stronger.

On the other side of that coin, would Charmander do better than Charizard? Definitely not, no, because Charizard was a focal point of the anime for longer and comes back every time the anime needs to get the views up. He's also cool as heck.

Back to the actual match: Yeah, some people took Squirtle over Pikachu, and yeah, he had an early lead, but Pikachu is the face of the franchise, and even though at one point he was a contest punchline he's now a juggernaut. Pikachu is one of the most recognizable things on the planet, and unlike Pac-Man, people actually seem to give a shit. Two shits. Three, even!

This match was a complete tossup, as seen by the three versions of my Andy Warhol Finals match pic I submitted:



The common theory was that Mega Man would take advantage of the Nintendo SFF and squeak by here. The second most common theory was that Mega Man was too heavily tied to Nintendo SFF and despite beating Charizard with Zero in the match that he would get beaten by Samus comfortably. The third theory was that Red would win because of POKEFEAR and a lack of common sense.

The results make sense once you spotlight just how Mega Man / Charizard / Zero panned out. The results are definitely due to how heavily the MM series is mixed with Nintendo, so the same logic should apply to this match. Samus also looked pretty good so far this contest. What did she have going on in 2013 that gave her this strength? Nothing since Other M? Alright cool what the fuck although I guess the same could be said about Mega Man.

Samus had such a boring path to victory, I think everyone was cheering for Mega Man to get to the finals here. It would have been a way better story than "Samus easily beats Sandbag, Knuckles, Tifa and Mega Man then gets knocked out by Snake and the rallied character"

Red bowed out gracefully here, he definitely looked pretty consistently good this contest, he lost badly to X once I think so coming close to Mega Man and getting into the semis shows how much he's grown. He didn't really have much of a challenge until this point but at least he never jobbed out to some fodder. Not sure where the guy goes from here, will he stay consistent in 2018?

Are we even going to remember to nominate Red in the sea of Shellder and Ditto support? Who knows. He could potentially make a crazy run if he gets a very low seed and a debatable matchup. Imagine Round 1 is (2)Sephiroth vs (7)Pokemon Trainer Red.

In the end this match didn't matter much (other than to our hearts) because whoever won here was going to be Draven food anyway.

Actually it should count it's a videogame imo.

IIRC, SBAllen ruled that Digimon are generally eligible awhile back in a message to someone but said that they had basically no chance of getting in. Presumably nobody outside board 8 actually cared to nominate individual Digimon. Or at least that would have been the case in the past; people actually liked Cyber-Sleuth so maybe that'll drive a few nominations. As in literally a few, instead of basically none.

Also, from what I remember people thought Greymon would be a better choice? Or maybe that was just me who thought that. Eh, it's true either way.

You know this is barebones but this is also basically the writeup I would write, just with more purple prose thrown in.

Before this match, people still thought Snake might win. I have no idea how they arrived to that conclusion based on the copious evidence that Draven would run away with this easily.

Perhaps if Samus had been swapped out for another joke proxy (like L-Block) Snake could have done better but there was no way he was winning at this point.

There was a ton of whining, and, of course, this being the finals, the amount of BUTTDEVESTATED MAX: BUTTFURIOUS ROAD comments peppering the boards basically made any serious talk impossible. I believe I was in Canada on vacation when this match happened and when I did log in at the end of the day I wasn't surprised by what I saw. The pillaging of our board went well into the night. It kinda sucked.

I wasn't following the "Allen's Wife" drama at the time because of my limited internet access, but I managed to download the last episode of The Show on the train ride back and listened to it all in disbelief.

Said Allen:

So I'm reading through the big topic about me explaining myself and wondering what the hell all this is about. So I go over to Reddit and my account and lo and behold, I see that I actually did post those messages. After the initial WTF!? reaction, I finally figure out what happened.

My wife loves Solid Snake. He's her favorite character in gaming. She also knew how irritated I was with this whole Draven thing, and worst of all, she knows all my passwords. Thus, her devious plot unfolded. She logged into my Reddit account posing as me and messaged the mods.

I honestly had no idea, and feel pretty stupid about the whole ordeal. Feel free to mercilessly mock me for getting completely owned by my wife!

Allen really types like an old man sometimes, but I've chatted with him on AIM before and he's actually more laid back when he's not on GameFAQS. The "owned by my wife" comment might as well have said "pwned" instead for how "fellow kids" it comes off.

Where do I stand with the "Allen's Wife" excuse? It reminds me of one of those Yu-Gi-Oh cards invented by the show where Yugi brings it out and it has crappy artwork done by an anime artist and it has a really specific bullshit effect that only applies to the weird situation Yugi is currently in

That's basically how this all panned out. Snake never had a chance, there was drama surrounding Allen's wife, and to this day we still talk about the time when reddit ran a train on us.

The only thing I want to briefly touch on are the long time Board 8ers who flipped to reddit's side and supported Draven. I can't remember specific names, but there was a lot of bickering at the time. Is there anyone reading this that voted Draven over Snake that wants to explain why they did it? This is a judgment free zone.



Well, except for him, I guess.
